Sony and Panasonic team up to create 300GB optical disc

flickr-3253768371-hdSony and Panasonic team up to create an optical disc that can hold up to 300GB of storage. It is said that the discs will be available in two years.

In an article from Mashable, the said companies were quoted saying “There has been an increasing need for archive capabilities, not only from video production industries, such as motion pictures and broadcasting, but also from cloud data centers that handle increasingly large volumes of data following the evolution in network services,”

It seems that the discs are going to be marketed to the production industry and the cloud data centers. With the increasing need and hunger for expanded data storage however, it wouldn’t be a surprise if these discs will also be marketed to regular consumers.
