Back in college, I used to lug around a brawny 15-inch laptop almost everywhere. It wasn’t really much of a burden as I pack it in a really comfortable backpack, but when I started my dissertation with advertising and production class assignments on the side, I wished I had a more compact and lightweight productivity machine. The Lenovo Yoga 900 convertible-hybrid laptop would have been perfect for the job.

    Design: (4.5/5)

The Lenovo Yoga 900 is a beautiful piece of tech, and anyone with a good eye for design would agree. It parades as silver-colored metal shell that nicely shows characteristic of this light and compact device. On the outside, you’ll immediately take notice of its solid build quality. It also has a nice matte finish with Yoga and Lenovo logos strategically placed on the lid.

To the right of the Yoga 900 are a USB 3.0 port, a headset jack, and buttons for auto-rotate lock, system recovery (triggers OneKey Recovery app), and power. Found on the left are a USB 2.0 that works together with the laptop charger, another USB 3.0 port, a USB-C port where a compatible third party adapter can be used to supplement ports that seem lacking such as LAN and HDMI, and finally a 4-in-1—SD, MMC, SDXC, and SDHC—card reader.

The Yoga 900 features a watchband-style hinge that gives you various modes of which you can use the laptop such as stand, tent, and tablet. The hinge is very sturdy and fluidly pivots, removing any doubt as to the durability of the laptop.

    Hardware: (4/5)

On the inside, the Yoga 900 looks asexciting as it is on the outside. Opening the laptop reveals a flat, 13.3-inch wide touch screen that boasts a QHD+ 3200 x 1800 resolution, which leaves little to nothing to be desired. Images appear crisp and vivid, though a bit more punch in colors would be lovely. Doing work on the Yoga 900 such as typing was a pleasant experience with sharp texts, while, viewing movies was an-eye feast thanks to absolute color accuracy.

The Yoga 900 comes with a generous 16GB of system memory which handles multitasking with breeze. Opening several windows simultaneously didn’t slow this powerhouse down let alone stutter.Similarly, its 512GB solid-state drive (SSD) provides plenty of room for your files and whatnot. Paired with an Intel Core i7-6500U plus an integrated Intel HD Graphics 520, its system easily carries out whatever task you throw at itnippily. It also handled games pretty well. As for hardcore gamers, the Yoga 900 can justly challenge massive games as long you don’t play them at ultra-quality settings.

As for sound performance, I found the Yoga 900’s very favorable. Sound comes from JBLstereo speakers powered by DolbyAudio technology professionally tuned for the Yoga 900. It projects sound a cut above conventional laptop speakers. I watched The Flash on this laptop to test the sound—also because it’s one of my favorite shows—and I must say, I was really fascinated. My brother and I propped it on a table in the living room and we didn’t even feel the need to pair it with a separate speaker.

    User Experience: (4.5/5)

What I particularly liked about the Yoga 900 is its ergonomic backlit keyboard. The keys are fittingly spaced and have a nice depth to them when pressed. Its backlight feature, enabled by pressing the Fn and spacebar keys concurrently, proved to be very useful during days I preferred working on my stories in the dark. The fairly-sized touchpad, on the other hand, is roomy and responsive. There are dedicated left- and right-click buttons which easily registered inputsduring use. The majority of the time I spent with the Yoga 900 I was on laptop mode. Nonetheless, its touchscreen display helps navigation, is great for playing games from the Windows Store, and all the functions you usually do with a touch-enabled device.

The Lenovo Yoga 900 comes with Windows 10 Operating System built in. The OS has been optimized for touch-friendly modern tile-based navigation as well as with gestures such as pinch to zoom and swipes. It also has few pre-installed apps like McAfee Antivirus, a trial Microsoft Office, Microsoft Edge, OneDrive, and other Lenovo assisted functions.

The Yoga 900 comes with a non-removable 4Cell 66-watt battery, which lasted me about around 8 hours of continued use. I think it’s one of the best in its class, I was even able to watch two episodes of The Flash set on max volume with the battery level nearing the critical 20 percent.

I didn’t really have many quibbles with the Yoga 900. It is lightweight and can be cradled in one arm or two comfortably. This should come as a plus, especially for those who are tired of carrying around their bulkylaptops all the time.

    Value: (4/5)

Everything put into perspective, the Lenovo Yoga 900 is perfect for those who require the basics (and not so basic) with its many interesting features on-board. If you’re looking for a laptop—which also happens to function perfectly as a tablet–that balances work and play, the Yoga handles it well. You’ve got abundant memory, head-turning design, impressive performance, and long battery life all well under the PHP 70k mark. This might be a deal breaker for some, but then again you wouldn’t hesitate to pay a premium for a device that offers all these attractive trims.

    Bottomline:

Multimedia playback and intensive tasks are no sweat for this hybrid laptop.
