Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) recently delivered 15 units of Isuzu NLR77 PUV Class 3 to MIMAROPA Transport Cooperative, accelerating the modernization of their fleet, which will serve commuters from Calapan City to Pinamalayan in Oriental Mindoro.
A first-time buyer of Isuzu, the cooperative previously operated UV express on the same route but recently decided to upgrade to Isuzu NLR77 PUV Class 3 to cater to the increasing number of commuters in the area and to align with LTFRB franchising guidelines for long-distance routes.

Over 100 bus drivers from Luzon and Metro Manila were given free eye care services by NLEX Corporation under its “See Clearly, Drive Safely” eye care program.
NLEX partnered with Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Cardinal Medical Charities Foundation Inc., and Executive Optical to provide free consultation, visual accuracy examination, refraction test, and eye disease screening to member drivers from the Nagkakaisang Samahan ng Nangagasiwa ng Panlalawigang Bus sa Pilipinas Inc (NSNPBPI).
The “See Clearly, Drive Safely” program aims to promote safe driving in NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector by instilling the importance of good eyesight to drivers when on the road.
“The program shows our commitment to making roads safe for everyone because good eyesight is critical to safe driving. By fostering good eye care, we will be able to protect the lives of the drivers and motorists as better vision guarantees safer travel,” NLEX Corporation president J. Luigi Bautista said.
Bautista explained that clear vision is essential for driving. If the drivers’ vision is unreliable, they cannot judge distance, identify road hazards, read traffic signs, and spot trouble while on the road, which may potentially increase the risk of accidents and endanger people’s lives.
In addition to free eye consultation, the NSNPBPI bus drivers were also provided free eye drops, reading, and prescription glasses during the two-day event. Meanwhile, drivers who need to undergo cataract surgery may avail of treatment and operation for free by the volunteer doctors of Cardinal Santos Medical Center.
NSNPBPI executive director Alex Yague extended the group’s appreciation for the program. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa NLEX at Cardinal Santos Medical Center sa isinagawa nilang eye care clinic na makakatulong sa ating mga driver. Sana po ay continuous ang pagkakaroon ng ganitong programa.”
Yague acknowledged the importance of promoting good eyesight and encouraged other members to participate in the program for their safety and that of other motorists.
Started in 2017, the program has served more than 750 transport drivers from the Provincial Bus Operators Association of the Philippines (PBOAP), NSNPBPI, and NLEX-SCTEX host communities.

New funding deals may be clinched at the Geeks On A Beach (GOAB) international conference on November 22 to 24, 2023, at Panglao Island in Bohol, which gathers startup founders, entrepreneurs, software engineers, technologists, venture capitalists, corporates, government, and other stakeholders.
Startups in the Philippines have quietly won USD1-billion in total funding deals for two straight years in a row from 2021 to 2022, and there are indications they could continue the winning trend.
“In 2010, Filipino startups raised USD40 million in funding. This has gone up 27 times to USD1.03 billion in 2021 and USD1.1 billion in 2022. This is a vote of confidence for Filipino startups that ought to be celebrated and continued,” said GOAB founding organizer Tina Amper of GeeksPH, referring to a highlight of the Philippine Venture Capital Report 2023.
Amper said that Filipinos’ share in funding available or won across the region has grown for the past three years, as she expressed elation over the rosy report by Foxmont Capital Partners.
“Comparing the aggregate deals closed by country, the Philippines has increased its stake relative to neighboring Southeast Asian countries over the last three years. The Philippines more than doubled from two percent in 2020 to five percent in 2021, and further grew to nine percent in 2022. This once again shows that Philippine deal growth is reaching admirable levels compared to its neighbors,” said the Foxmont study.
“Deals” are venture capital transactions where startup companies raise capital from external sources, which include financing received from venture capital funds, angel investors, angel groups, accelerators, incubators, corporate venture firms, corporate startup investors, joint ventures, private equity funds, mergers and acquisitions, grants, and crowdfunding.
For Amper and GOAB co-organizers, startup successes mean more entrepreneurs, more employment, more contributions to the economy, and more benefits for the Filipino public.
On the consumer side, perhaps the most well-known among startups and related businesses are those in e-commerce and Fintech.
The e-Conomy SEA Report 2022 says the value of the Philippine e-commerce market has grown exponentially from USD3-billion in 2020 to USD14-billion in 2022.
Statista meanwhile said that total mobile wallet transactions, led by dominant leader GCash, amounted to USD28.6-billion in 2022, or almost twice the figure in 2021.
