    Super-powered drama “MOVING” breaks records to become the most viewed Korean Original Series across Disney+ and HULU

    Featuring international espionage, super-powered spies, and deadly assassins, Korean drama and tentpole series Moving has quickly captured the world’s attention, becoming the most-watched Korean original on Disney+ globally and Hulu in the U.S. based on hours streamed after 7 days.

    Epson partners with WWF-PH to support mangrove ecosystem restoration in municipalities in Palawan

    Global technology leader Epson, in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, EU Ocean Governance, and the Bataraza local government, has successfully launched a new community learning and innovation hub (CLIH) in Bataraza, Palawan, meant to establish a learning network that builds the capacity of the local coastal communities through knowledge exchange and sharing best practices, while promoting collaboration. In conjunction with World Mangrove Day on June 26th, representatives from Epson and WWF visited CLIH in Barangay. Buliluyan, Bataraza, to celebrate the special occasion with local communities and volunteers. 

    The restoration project was previously launched in the nearby municipality of Balabac in August 2022, which was followed by the official launch of the Bataraza Learning and Innovation Hub (BLIH) in January of this year. Together with partner stakeholders in Balabac and Bataraza, the project is implementing a local capability development programme that includes biophysical, socio-economic, and governance aspects of ecosystem restoration, and community knowledge exchange.

    This component is part of WWF-Coral Triangle Programme’s bigger initiative focusing on the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape, a marine ecoregion shared with Indonesia and Malaysia, known for its rich and significant levels of marine biodiversity. The initiative is also supported by Epson under the regional partnership with WWF and aims to create scalable conservation activities, primarily focused on restoring degraded or damaged coral reefs and mangrove areas. Through the restoration activities, best practices and lessons learned are cross-shared through the community learning and innovation hubs, and community champions are trained for co-management of restored and existing coral reef and mangrove areas.

    “This is just one step towards our global commitment of reaching out to communities and continuing our support towards restoring and protecting the Philippines’ rich biodiversity. Our continuing partnership with WWF enables us to work toward a shared goal of a greener future for all,” shared Masako Kusama, president and director of Epson Philippines Corporation. “The work we do with WWF underpins Epson’s goals to champion projects that support biodiversity, inspire collaborations, and enrich lives, not just in the Philippines but across the region as well.”

    “Since the launch of the Bataraza Learning and Innovation Hub (BLIH) and other succeeding activities involving the local government unit, the community, the private sector including the academe and civil society organisations, we have been empowering communities by enabling them to share and gain knowledge and practice from each other,” project manager at WWF-Philippines, Mary Joan Pecson said.

    Known as one of the nature-based solutions to address climate change, mangroves play a key role in ecosystems, providing benefits for both nature and people. Mangroves store 7.5 to 10 times more carbon per acre (3 to 4 times more per hectare) than tropical forests, and their loss contributes to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation. Unfortunately, 62% of the world’s mangroves have been destroyed between 2000 and 2016.

    “Our Local Government strongly supports conservation initiatives geared towards protecting the mangroves in Bataraza. By establishing partnerships with multi-sectoral groups and the coastal communities, we innovate long-term solutions to restore degraded coastal and marine ecosystems and prioritise the welfare of our people,” said Hon. Abraham Ibba, Mayor of Bataraza.

    “The destruction of our mangrove forests results in the decrease of our marine resources since part of their habitat has been destroyed,” said Bataraza Municipal Environmental and Natural Resource Officer Reynaldo Rivera, EnP.

    “Mangrove forests serve as filters and protection against siltation of the sea and coral reefs and from the big waves reaching the shoreline, which may cause damage to residential houses and other properties. There is really a need for the rehabilitation of our mangrove forest,” he added, highlighting how the destruction of the mangrove swamps affects not only the environment and marine life but also the community.

    The Learning Hub in Bataraza is set to be a best practice example that can be replicated in other locations across the Coral Triangle. With the support from Epson and other partner stakeholders, WWF-Philippines aims to further expand the initiative to neighboring areas to build a more climate-resilient future for communities.

    foodpanda, TabSquare offer AI-driven tech to restaurants

    Online food and grocery platform foodpanda and software company TabSquare are joining hands to empower restaurants with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered in-restaurant solutions. 

    The collaboration is part of a region-wide partnership including other Asian markets like Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan, to help restaurant partners digitize their ordering, payment, and customer engagement-related processes. 

    In the Philippines, the announcement was made during foodpanda’s recent partner vendors summit, entitled CRAVE: Creating Relationships and Advancing Vendor Experiences. At the event, partner vendor attendees were provided a firsthand end-to-end experience using TabSquare, showcasing its convenience, seamless operations, and efficiency.

    According to foodpanda Philippines commercial director Luis Antonio Yanga, “By offering digital menus through QR codes, we enable customers to place orders and make payments via TabSquare’s platform effortlessly. This enhances the dining experience by seamlessly bridging the offline-to-online gap and provides efficient solutions for our thousands of partner vendors and merchants.”

    Delivering convenience to diners and restos alike

    With foodpanda and TabSquare’s combined data and predictive technologies, restaurant partners can enhance customer engagement and retention. 

    Restaurant owners can review the transactions via TabSquare’s analytics, which provides valuable insights to support partners in improving menu items, pricing, and promotions, among other things. “This enables restaurant owners to identify trends, and personalize subsequent experiences based on customers’ purchasing history,” Yanga said. 

    Moreover, digital menus offer numerous advantages, including reduced reliance on wait staff, minimized employee turnover, decreased losses on food and finances due to human error, and more efficient menu changes without costly reprints.

    According to foodpanda and TabSquare’s data, restaurants using this digital solution can see up to 10% higher bill sizes, up to 50% reduction in staff costs, and better customer satisfaction. At the same time, restaurants on foodpanda see an average of at least a 10% uplift in business performance since joining the platform. 

    In the dining service, there has been a massive shift in digitally-led solutions and services which TabSquare believes will further enhance the appeal of their services. “With foodpanda, we will be bringing many new innovative features to the industry. For example, restaurants working with TabSquare can now promote themselves to foodpanda’s large customer base and attract new customers,” told Anshul Gupta, co-founder of TabSquare. 

    Growing demand for QR codes in dine-in

    Dine-in is offered through foodpanda’s pandapro subscription program with exclusive discounts and deals for app users. 

    Yanga shared that to further boost this segment and cater to the growing demand for QR Code payments, foodpanda introduced TabSquare’s enhanced QR Code scanning process for dine-in orders. This strategic move comes as a response to the rising demand for QR Code payments, evident by the country’s QR Code transactions totaling PHP32.7 billion in Q1 2023.

    Recently, dine-in has also become available to all foodpanda app users in Cebu with new features like in-app payment. With “Redeem & Pay,” the process becomes effortless as users can pay directly through the app, saving time and enhancing the overall dining experience.

    Filipino riders in race against time after Indonesia result

    The UMA Racing MMR Yamaha Philippines continues to tough it out against the best of Asia after their recent setback in Indonesia. 

    It’s been a challenging season so far for April King Mascardo and Gian Carlo Mauricio who have yet to find their stride in the 2023 Asia Road Racing Championship. A string of losses makes their shot at a podium finish a tall mountain to climb. April, who finished third overall last year, finished at 11th in race 1. But disaster struck on race 2 when his front tire slipped on the last turn as he was holding on to 3rd place. Turning his excellent performance to a DNF. Gian who qualified at 11th to start was held to 24th in race 1 and 17th in race 2. 

    With 2 rounds remaining, April sits at 13th overall and Gian is on the outside looking in at 23rd. Their next race will be on November 4-5 in China, and they will need to be virtually perfect to contend for a respectable finish this season. Difficult as it may seem but greatness never comes easy and on the racetrack anything is possible.

    UnionDigital Bank wins profitability race in PH digital banking

    UnionDigital Bank, the digital bank subsidiary of Union Bank of the Philippines, is one of the fastest digital banks in the world to achieve profitability. It attained a triple-digit percentage growth in its net income during the first half of 2023 compared to the second half of 2022. The Aboitiz Group-led digital bank, which recently marked its first-year milestone in July, attributed this to the robust loan portfolio growth via the UnionBank ecosystem.

    “I take inspiration from Valkyrae. Kaya niyang balansehin ‘yung pagiging entrepreneur and being co-founder of 100 Games. At the same time, she’s very passionate about what she wants to do and how gaming affects her life,” Bhea said. 

    Taking her cue from her Valkyrae, Bhea currently shuffles her passion for learning and gaming. Her impressive accomplishments include serving as the Internal Vice President of her school organization, being the current VALORANT Event Manager of Grayhawks Esports, and serving in leadership positions in her school’s student government.

    Security Bank empowers workforce with Darwinbox’s mobile-first HR solution

    Security Bank Corporation, a leading universal bank in the Philippines, has recently launched HeRO, powered by Darwinbox, as its Human Capital Management (HCM) platform. This elevates the employee experience of the Bank’s more than 7,000-strong workforce.     With this new feature, users only need to scan or upload a QR code to instantly transfer funds to peers and other bank or e-wallet accounts, to make banking safe, simple, and secure.

    As an added treat, Metrobank users who will send money worth PHP1,000 and below will enjoy waived InstaPay fees until September 30, 2023. 

    Accessing this new feature is easy! Just follow these simple steps:

    Microsoft introduces AI-powered innovations for frontline workers

    Microsoft has announced the expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) technology into a new software designed to streamline processes for frontline workers to improve efficiency, enhance customer experience, and enable faster decision-making. The global technology leader is committed to investing in innovative solutions to help boost productivity for frontline workers, those who work directly with customers or are involved in the production and delivery of products and services. Microsoft recently introduced new tools and integrations that bring the power of next-generation AI to the frontline across the areas of intelligent operations, effortless communication, and trusted experiences.

    Bringing Microsoft Copilot to Dynamics 365

    Microsoft infuses the productivity applications frontline managers use every day with the robust data and intelligence of underlying business applications. It is bringing AI Copilot to the new Dynamics 365 Field Service with Outlook and Microsoft Teams integrations to help streamline the frontline experience and drive efficiency with operations. Through this integration, frontline service managers who receive customer escalations in Outlook or Microsoft Teams can use Copilot in Dynamics 365 to streamline work order creation with relevant details pre-populated from emails or chats, optimize technician scheduling with data-driven recommendations based on factors such as travel time, availability and skillset, as well as generate draft responses to customer messages summarizing next steps without switching apps.

    Soon, Microsoft 365 Copilot can ground prompts and retrieve insights for frontline managers, leveraging data from the Shifts app with a new Shifts plugin for Microsoft 365 Copilot, in addition to user and company data it has access to such as Teams chat history, SharePoint, emails and more. This will maintain end-to-end visibility on operations, enabling frontline managers to quickly get a list of important items specific to their team and location to speed up time-consuming tasks like covering shifts and onboarding new employees.

    Strengthening communication on Microsoft Viva

    Microsoft Viva is also getting major AI-powered updates. Announcements in Viva Connections enables corporate communicators to draft, schedule and target important announcements like urgent communications, role-specific updates and safety policy changes to frontline workers. Communicators can quickly send messages directly from Viva Connections without having to leave Teams. Messages are delivered to the frontline through push notifications on their mobile devices and announcement cards in their Teams home experience.

    Another update is Targeted Campaigns in Viva Engage, which powers communicators to create campaigns that promote company-wide initiatives targeted to frontline audiences.

    GCash waives QR transaction fees for micro-merchants

    GCash, the Philippines’ #1 financial super app, waives the QRPH transaction fees or merchant discount rates (MDRs) for micro-merchants who use the scan-to-pay service, until the end of 2023.

    In addition to this, micro-merchants have access to an increased wallet limit of up to PHP500,000 per month. Moreover, the 1.5% transaction fee is waived up to PHP100,000 in gross sales.

    E-wallets and other payment platforms charge fees as high as 2% for the use of their cashless transaction services, such as QR-based and card payments.

    “For GCash, making this service free means micro-entrepreneurs can earn a little extra for their families through safe cashless transactions. We are committed to working with our micro-entrepreneurs to achieve their business goals in the digital economy,” said Ren-Ren Reyes, the president and CEO of G-Xchange, Inc., the mobile wallet operator of GCash.

    Micro-merchants are those with businesses that are smaller in scale, such as sari-sari store owners, public market vendors, and online sellers. 

    Making use of GCash’s scan-to-pay enables faster tracking of payments received for merchants without imposing any additional cost, even for their customers. 

    “We are one with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in its goal of bringing more micro-merchants into the digital economy. Together with our partners, we will equip micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with the right tools and products so they can grow their businesses safely and conveniently,” Reyes said.
