It’s no secret that all of that sweet, sweet Honeycomb love are all powered by ARM chips at this point in time. It’s a potentially large market that’s only getting bigger, and apparently Intel wants in on the action. The world’s largest chipmaker says that Google’s Honeycomb OS is being ported over to x86 chips, which include its Atom processors. This little tidbit was revealed last Tuesday during the chip maker’s Q1 financial results call. Paul Otellini, Intel’s CEO says that “We’ve received the Android code – the Honeycomb version of Android source code – from Google, and we’re actively doing the port on that”.
Intel is in a unique position here, as it has a wide array of partners and vendors that it can partner up with to deliver an x86 powered tablet. Manufacturers like ASUS, Acer, Toshiba…the list goes on and on. In fact, once the port is complete, there maybe a way to wrangle the x86 source code into current Windows powered tablets that are running Atom.
How soon will we see these new x86 powered Android tablets? Sooner than you think. Many have speculated that these new, Intel powered tablets may show up in this year’s COMPUTEX trade show set to begin in the 30th of May.
