To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the PEN F, Olympus launches its digital counterpart, the PEN E-P5, which now serves as the new flagship model in the company’s line of micro four-thirds cameras, the PEN series.

The PEN E-P5 is the first Olympus camera to feature built-in Wi-Fi. By scanning a QR code on the camera’s LCD, users will be able to sync their mobile device with the wireless network created by the camera. The Olympus Image Share 2.0 app lets users use their mobile device as a remote viewfinder and enables them to embed GPS information in the images.

The new device is also the first compact system camera with a mechanical shutter that can achieve a speed of 1/8000. It packs a 16-megapixel TruePic VI Live MOS sensor and is compatible with the entire range of micro four-thirds lenses offered by Olympus. It carries a 1.04-million touch-panel LCD that can be tilted upwards at an 80-degree angle and downwards at a 50-degree angle. It doesn’t have a viewfinder on deck, but Olympus offers an optional VF-4 electronic viewfinder (EVF) that can be used on the device. The E-P5 comes with a built-in flash.

The 5-axis image stabilization mechanism, which was introduced in the Olympus OM-D E-M5, has been reduced to a more compact size to fit in the E-P5’s slim body. The new IS-AUTO mode automatically detects the camera’s movements and gives the user control over correction when panning.

Creative features include 12 Art Filters, the Time Lapse movie function which lets users convert a series of pictures into a mini-movie, and Photo Story mode, which creates a collage out of multiple photos of a scene. The E-P5 also has an interval shooting function that allows users to set a time interval between 1 second to 24 hours, as well as how many shots the camera should take in a series.

Other features include quick start-up, short release time lag AF mode—which reduces the time between shots to 0.044 seconds—and 9fps burst shooting. The device is available in black, white and silver.

The Olympus PEN E-P5 will be available this month at a suggested retail price of USD 999.99 for the body-only package, and USD 1,499.99 for the package that includes a black or silver body, a black M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 lens, and a VF-4 EVF.
