Now Android gamers will be pleased to know that Sonic is now available on the Google Play Store so you can get in some classic gaming on your Android device. For the small price of US$2.99 (Php 120), you can now play Sonic the Hedgehog on any Android device.
But the real news is this shocker—Sonic is now going to be exclusive to Nintendo consoles, something once thought unthinkable by console gamers, as Sega and Nintendo were bitter rivals during the console wars of the 1990s. In the long run, Nintendo won as SEGA stopped producing consoles and started focusing on software, but Sonic continued to appear on other consoles frequently while not owing any allegiance to a single console. Sonic made appearances on the PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo consoles such as the Wii and the Wii U. Sonic has also made appearances on handheld consoles and mobile devices, such as the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation VITA, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo 3DS.
“Sonic the Hedgehog has proven incredibly successful on Nintendo platforms and we are pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with Nintendo,” said John Cheng, President & COO of SEGA of America. “As we initiate this new exclusive partnership with the next three titles we believe that Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are ideal platforms to showcase the evolution of the Sonic brand.” Sonic made his debut in 1991 and quickly became SEGA’s mascot in order to compete with Nintendo’s Mario character.
“The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “These announcements in conjunction with SEGA demonstrate the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform, and set the stage for our upcoming announcements at E3.”
