Toyota Motor Philippines records its first complete podium sweep across all contest categories since joining the regional competition in 2006.
Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) brought home six medals from the 2026 Toyota Asia Pacific Skills Contest, marking its first complete podium sweep across all categories since it began participating in the annual competition in 2006.
Held at Toyota Motor Thailand’s Ban Pho Plant in Chachoengsao Province, the competition brought together line team members and leaders from 11 Toyota affiliates across Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Pakistan, and India. Participants demonstrated technical skills rooted in the Toyota Production System, covering several areas of automotive manufacturing.
Six medals across five disciplines
Christian Cobilla earned silver in the Painting – Team Leader category, while Wilmer Penalla took silver in Logistics – Team Member. Noel Elpos, Edwin Bocaya, Loreto Muyna, and Ramel Sarmiento each secured bronze medals in Logistics, Assembly, Quality Control, and Welding, respectively.
The six-medal haul brought TMP’s total medal count since 2006 to 14, including the company’s fourth gold medal earned in 2025. The 2026 result also delivered breakthrough podium finishes in two contest categories for the Philippine delegation.
The achievement highlights the role of technical skills and production discipline within Toyota’s local manufacturing operations, where Filipino team members work across assembly, welding, painting, logistics, and quality control.
Building local manufacturing capability
TMP recently marked its 38th anniversary and has produced more than 1.2 million vehicles locally. Its Santa Rosa, Laguna plant currently has the capability to produce more than 60,000 completely knocked down units annually across the Vios, Innova, and Next Generation Tamaraw.
The company has also expanded its local manufacturing capabilities through an in-house vehicle conversion facility for the Next Generation Tamaraw. The facility can produce six body configurations, including vehicles intended for applications such as utility transport and ambulances.
This expansion creates opportunities not only for Toyota production team members but also for Filipino vehicle designers, engineers, parts suppliers, and body builders involved in the broader automotive manufacturing ecosystem.
Skills development beyond production numbers
The Asia Pacific Skills Contest gives Toyota affiliates a regional platform to benchmark technical capabilities and reinforce shopfloor practices based on the Toyota Production System. For TMP, the six-medal result reflects the depth of skills being developed within its Philippine manufacturing operations while adding another milestone to its long-running participation in the regional competition.
The achievement also comes as Toyota continues to invest in local production capacity and workforce development, strengthening the role of Filipino manufacturing talent in its regional operations.
