Toyota Motors Philippines (TMP) has finally launched their much-awaited flagship sports car, the GR Supra in the country.
The fifth-generation Supra will be TMP’s first Supra offering since it debuted as the Celica Supra way back in 1971. The new GR Supra or the A90 is also the return of the Supra in Toyota’s line-up after a 17-year hiatus. It is also the first global Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) model.
This new Supra was initially teased to the world back in 2014 as the futuristic FT-1 concept car before it was officially announced as the new Supra in 2016. It is also the first Supra that will be made outside of Japan with all units being manufactured at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.
Powering the new Supra is a 3.0-L twin-scroll turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine. The new engine is capable of 335 hp at 5000 – 6500 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at 1,600 – 4,500 rpm. Getting the most of the 335 hp is an eight-speed automatic transmission engine.
TMP claims that the new Supra’s performance is at par with — or even better than — some of its European rivals.
Inside the Supra are an 8.8-inch TFT Multi-Information display gauge and a heads-up display to aid the driver. To fully enjoy the Supra, Toyota has fitted it with responsive paddle shifter to access all eight gears. The infotainment display is also an 8.8-inch TFT LCD touchscreen mated with a JBL 12-speaker HiFi Stereo setup.
The GR Supra is also fitted with disc brakes while the front has a four-piston fixed caliper and the back has a one-piston floating caliper. Other safety features of the GR Supra are seven SRS airbags, vehicle stability control, ABS, and traction control.
Only one variation of the GR Supra will retail in the country and pricing will be based on color choice.
