Predator League 2025 PH Finals crowns new champs

Predator Gaming assembled the best local Dota 2 and VALORANT teams in Cebu, lighting up the Queen City of the South with explosive, world-class esports action. The crowds were packed at Robinsons Galleria Cebu where the Predator League 2025 Philippine Finals took place, as fans and passers-by alike witnessed esports greatness.

    Grassroots Endeavor from the Start

Predator League always seeks to discover new talent in the local esports scene. Four regional qualifying bouts around the archipelago were held to give more chances for players to showcase their skills and be exposed to high-level plays.

The Predator League 2025 Philippine Finals set the stage for the best local Dota 2 and VALORANT teams to fight for the lion’s share of the coveted PHP1,000,000 total prize pool. The Dota 2 and VALORANT champions took home PHP250,000 each and a slot in the Asia Pacific Predator League 2025 Grand Finals.

    Dota 2 Highlights

    Predator League

The Dota 2 Grand Finals pitted long-standing squad Execration against newer team Ivory. With in-form mid laners Execration’s Charles “Lewis” Santos and Ivory’s Argle “Ken” Llesis duking it out, it was an exciting match-up from the get-go. While Ivory brought their A-game, Execration’s tried and tested experience prevailed. Lewis was his usual dominant self, but carry player Denz “Denzsanity” Anedez also stepped up to the plate with an impressive 7.5 kill and 10.5 assist average throughout the series.

    VALORANT Highlights

    Predator League

It was a moment to remember for the collegiate esports scene in the Philippines as DLSU VALORANT Esports, UAAP’s VALORANT champions, took their place in the tournament via direct invite. The team showed everyone they have what it takes to compete with the best as they made it all the way to the finals in this pro player-laden tournament despite having less competitive LAN experience. DLSU showed they could stand with VALORANT team staple ZOL Esports in the Grand Finals. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for the Xavier “Xavi8k” Juan-led squad from Taft as ZOL Esports took an easy 2-0 sweep behind the constant heroics and clutch prowess of ZOL Esports controller Patrick “PatMen” Mendoza. Xavi8k played for Oasis Gaming when they bested ZOL Esports in the Predator League 2024 Philippine Finals. It came around full circle for ZOL and made this year’s victory all the more sweet.

    Tickets Booked for Kuala Lumpur

Execration, Ivory, and ZOL Esports have claimed their spot in the Asia Pacific Predator League 2025 Grand Finals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Team Secret will join them in flying the Philippine flag against the best teams in the region early next year.

Pag-IBIG Fund reports Q3 growth in savings and shelter financing

Pag-IBIG Fund, in coordination with the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), participated in the Philippine Information Agency’s (PIA) Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas on 12 November 2024.

The regional town hall, held simultaneously across sixteen regions, became the venue for Pag-IBIG Fund to report its performance for the first three quarters of the year, reflecting its commitment to delivering its mandates for the benefit of Filipino workers.

Following a historic milestone last August when Pag-IBIG Fund surpassed the PHP 1 trillion mark in total assets, the organization continues its strong growth. As of the third quarter, Pag-IBIG Fund continues to grow with more than 16.37 million active members, who have collectively saved PHP98.72 billion— PHP49.27 billion collected from the mandatory Regular Savings program and P48.86 billion collected under the Fund’s voluntary MP2 savings.

From January to September 2024, Pag-IBIG Fund was able to assist more than 2.5 million members in need of immediate short-term cash financing, approving Multi-Purpose Loan applications of more than two million borrowers, amounting to a total of PHP49.72 billion, a 16% increase in both the number of borrowers and the total loan amount compared to the same period last year.  Almost 461,000 victims affected by various calamities this year were also assisted with the release of PHP5.92 billion in Pag-IBIG Calamity Loans. Applications for Pag-IBIG Fund’s Short-Term Loans do not have processing fees. Loan proceeds are also not deducted with advanced payments or interests, allowing it to be one of the most affordable cash loans in the market.

Aside from the calamity loan, Pag-IBIG Fund also approved the implementation of a one-month moratorium for housing loan payments of affected borrowers residing and working in areas declared under a state of calamity due to Typhoon Kristine. The one-month housing loan payment moratorium allows the calamity victims to prioritize finances to help them recover from the effects of the typhoon. Eligible members may apply for the availment of the moratorium program until 31 December 2024, either through the Virtual Pag-IBIG or at the nearest Pag-IBIG branch.

In terms of shelter financing, Pag-IBIG Fund has released PHP88.17 billion to 61,597 housing loan borrowers who needed funds to purchase or improve their homes. The Pag-IBIG Housing Loan allows borrowers to access financing of up to P6 million at interest rates as low as 3% for socialized and low-cost housing.

Pag-IBIG Fund has also remained active in the promotion of the government’s flagship program, the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pamilyang Pilipino Housing (4PH) Program. As of September 2024, Pag-IBIG Fund has already released PHP20.17 billion for the development of various 4PH projects nationwide, which is set to benefit 17,791 low-income borrowers.

Pag-IBIG Fund CEO Marilene C. Acosta said, “Our accomplishments this year underscore our dedication to serving the financial needs of Filipinos across the country. Participating in the PIA’s Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas serves as a good opportunity for us to directly engage with our members and inform them how Pag-IBIG Fund is working towards a stronger financial institution. After all, our members are the true owners of the Fund. It is just proper that they know how their savings are used and how effectively managing Pag-IBIG’s finances will result to their benefit through dividends and returns on their savings.” Pag-IBIG Fund’s participation in the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas is part of its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement, aiming to keep members and partners informed on the impact of its operations to the workers, employers, and businesses in each region.

Grab boosts service reliability, accessibility amid holiday demand growth

Grab Philippines is gearing up to surpass its holiday performance from last year, according to country head Ronald Roda. The leading superapp has been developing a comprehensive strategy to enhance reliability, accessibility, and safety as demand skyrockets in the final two months of the year.

Historical data shows that Grab Philippines experiences at least a 19% increase in daily transacting users for its ride-hailing services every last quarter of the year, with the number of ride bookings growing by up to 45% in the second and third weeks of December. For its deliveries business, demand rises by 20% on key holiday dates, with a recent survey by the brand revealing that 44% of Grab Philippines users rely on the app for their festive meal deliveries.

Grab Philippines country head Ronald Roda shares, “Our data and studies all lead to a singular insight: Filipinos just wish to be present this Christmas – fully engaged with families and friends as they celebrate the most beloved holiday. Grab aims to bring our kababayans much closer to their loved ones, and help them create special moments this holiday season.”  The yearning to be together every holiday is underpinned in Grab’s Holiday Trends study, indicating that Filipinos attend an average of four gatherings in celebration of Christmas and New Year.

The brand emphasizes that being a reliable and accessible platform is no easy task. “For some, the holiday season lasts two or three months. For Grab, it is a journey that spans over 10 months when you consider all the preparations done leading up to the season. We have been preparing since January of this year — working with our regulators towards a more balanced demand and supply, and launching a series of technologies to provide our consumers with a better holiday experience,” Roda adds.

    Strengthening partnerships to meet demand

While demand during peak times may inevitably outstrip current supply, the leading superapp remains optimistic that its service reliability this year will be much improved in comparison to the previous holidays.

Roda expresses the platform’s gratitude to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for its continued openness and supportive efforts. With the release of new TNVS slots in August, Grab has been onboarding new driver-partners – a process that can take up to three to five months.

Besides the challenge of demand and supply imbalance, Grab is also looking after the potential impact of holiday-induced traffic congestion on the earnings and productivity of driver-partners. Historical data of the platform show that drivers, on the average, will need to spend 14% more time for the same trip distance for most of the December holiday rush.

“While we continue to prioritize the accessibility of our services, we are also closely monitoring the fairness of our fares to ensure that our driver-partners can earn sustainably and viably this holiday season. By ensuring this, we hope to encourage more drivers to continue serving our passengers in spite of the traffic situation, helping maintain service reliability on our platform,” Roda notes. “The holidays are also crucial for our driver-partners, and we are committed to helping them capitalize on the increased demand to attain sufficient, if not above-par earnings, for themselves and their families.”

Grab assures users that fares will stay fair and in line with the regulatory matrix implemented by the LTFRB. To aid in maintaining the accessibility of its ride-hailing services, it has also expanded the coverage of its GrabUnlimited subscription service, which now includes an everyday 8% discount on GrabCar rides. Furthermore, as part of its affordability commitment, it has launched GrabCar Saver – an affordable mobility solution cheaper than a standard GrabCar ride.

The leading superapp has also recently launched its Group Rides feature, which not only maximizes the utilization of its fleet through the carpooling model but also efficiently lowers fares by allowing groups of four to share their ride’s base fare.

Harnessing technology for an elevated holiday Grab experience

Leading to the holidays, Grab has also introduced several new features that improve access to rides and food deliveries for Filipino consumers.

    Grab
Grab Philippines director for mobility, EJ Dela Vega

This lineup of new technologies includes Advance Booking, which guarantees on-time rides to the airport that can be booked up to seven days in advance—a perfect solution for holiday travelers.

In line with its commitment to affordability, the superapp has also introduced a number of new features. The GrabFood Group Order feature facilitates collective meal orders for families and friends, offering escalating discounts that can go as high as 15% as the number of participants increases.

    Grab
Grab Philippines director for deliveries, Greg Camacho

GrabFood Saver helps users save on delivery fees, while the Large Orders option allows for ordering larger quantities of food and essentials for group celebrations, complete with special deals. These features are designed to effectively manage the expected growth in delivery demand during the Christmas season.

“Many of our kababayans are looking forward to spending the Holidays with their loved ones, and we are aware of their expectations of us during this season. In response to the devastating impact of Typhoon Kristine, BingoPlus Foundation, the social development arm of DigiPlus Interactive, formally distributed PHP37 million in financial aid to families affected by Typhoon Kristine. In the wake of 148 confirmed casualties nationwide, at least PHP250,000 was committed to each bereaved family, as a symbol of compassion and support for their journey to recovery. The initiative started with 39 bereaved families during a turnover ceremony on November 10, 2024, at Talisay New Municipal Grounds in Batangas and will continue in several parts of the country. This pledge will continue to support affected families in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

First Lady Louise “Liza” Araneta-Marcos, Department of Social Welfare and Development Undersecretary Pinky Romualdez, and DigiPlus chairman Eusebio Tanco were joined by Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas, Batangas Vice Governor Mark Leviste, Talisay Mayor Nestor Natanauan, Bacolod Mayor Albie Benitez, BingoPlus Foundation COO Celeste Jovenir, and local leaders and community members to personally hand over the financial aid. The event highlighted the Foundation’s mission to multiply the good by extending meaningful support to Filipinos in their time of greatest need.

Typhoon Kristine, one of the year’s most devastating storms, left a trail of destruction across South Luzon, with severe flooding and landslides resulting in significant loss of life and damage to property. Talisay, particularly impacted by landslides in Batangas, is one of the focus areas of the Foundation’s relief efforts as the entire province was declared in a state of calamity.

With a mission to “multiply the good” in the heart of communities, BingoPlus Foundation joins hands with the DSWD in delivering financial aid and livelihood assistance to families affected by Typhoon Kristine, starting with nearly 40 families bereaved due to a landslide in Talisay, Batangas.

“The BingoPlus Foundation exists to provide more than financial aid; it is about creating hope, resilience, and real change,” said DigiPlus Interactive chairman Eusebio Tanco. “The work of the BingoPlus Foundation is a true reflection of our belief in giving back without holding back, of reaching out to lift up those in need, and of multiplying the good in every way possible.”

The provision of financial assistance builds on BingoPlus Foundation’s prior support initiatives for Typhoon Kristine victims. In collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s National Resource Operations Center (DSWD NROC), the Foundation provided cavans of rice, benefiting at least 750 families, and mobilized volunteers to help repack and distribute critical supplies for affected provinces.

The canvas of the future: Secret Fresh artists share how the TCL NXTFRAME TV transforms their art to a new light

TCL, a global consumer electronics brand, one of the world’s top two TV brands, and the No.1 Panel TV in the Philippines, successfully unveiled its newest innovation, the TCL NXTFRAME TV. The “Seamless Art, Beyond Space” exhibit showcased the TV’s unique ability as a ‘living canvas’ to adapt and enhance the art in real-time, creating a truly immersive experience.

“Our aim for the whole exhibit is Blending Art and Technology.  We chose pop art as an ideal theme because of its vibrant, visually engaging nature, which attracts attention and creates a dynamic atmosphere. It blends art with consumer culture, aligning perfectly with the TCL Frame TV’s fusion of technology and artistic display,” TCL brand manager Joseph Cernitchez explains.

Four talented artists collaborated with TCL to transform the NXTFRAME TV into a canvas for their innovative artworks, elevating the viewing experience.

“A Gamer’s Journey: From Analog to Digital” by Chill

Chill is known for his dynamic and thought-provoking artwork that blends traditional Filipino culture with contemporary themes. Driven by a passion for urban expression, Chill has significantly contributed to the local art scene.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to be part of the TCL and Ronac Art collaboration. This project aligns perfectly with my artistic vision, and I’m excited to contribute to such a dynamic partnership,” says Chill.

He calls his artwork “A Gamer’s Journey: From Analog to Digital.”  For someone who grew up in a world where games, cartoons, anime, and movies were integral to his identity. From the simplest consoles of the ’90s to the latest technologies, his passion for these mediums was not just a pastime; it became the foundation of my art and character.

His piece reflects the evolution of technology and its impact on our lives. From classic games and cartoons that inspired me to modern gadgets that simplify our daily routines, Chill aims to express his appreciation for this developmental process. As he would put it, ‘My art is not just about nostalgia; it also conveys hope for future generations—a reminder that technology can be a tool for creativity and understanding.”

‘Different Vision’ by Reynold Dela Cruz

Reynold Dela Cruz is a talented Filipino contemporary artist who draws inspiration from everyday life and creates artwork that reflects his aspirations, dreams, and desires. His works often feature subliminal messages, birds, flowers, animals, and other elements that illustrate different human characteristics.

He called his masterpiece for this collaboration “Different Vision,” showing how an image transcends the surface of a singular definition. His complex, multifaceted layering of many images upon one another shows how general human perception is composed of interpretive layers that operate on different wavelengths to understand a concept.

Reynold testifies, “I am honored to have contributed to this groundbreaking exhibit. The opportunity to fuse my artistic vision with TCL’s cutting-edge technology was both stimulating and rewarding.”

“BamBam and Friends” by RA Tijing

Renowned pop-surreal visual artist RA Tijing was thrilled to see how his work would look on the NXTFRAME TV. His works often blend pop surrealism, contemporary art, and social realism, incorporating elements of magic and dreams to reflect reality and personal experiences.

“The TCL NXTFRAME TV gives vibrant colors and has a sleek design that creates a stunning visual experience that complements my paintings perfectly.”

He calls his exhibit “BamBam and Friends.” It focuses on his Black Sheep character and his experiences during his art residency in Europe. It also features stories about the friends he made and even the delivery boys.

    “Recent Works’ by Ronson Culibrina

Ronson Culibrina is a talented Filipino contemporary artist who has gained recognition and exhibited his work both locally and internationally at such a young age. He created his works as a by-product of his daily musings as a full-time artist and a father.

However, through his participation in the Seamless Art, Beyond Space exhibit, he realized a different reality and eventually formed a transformative experience. “TCL NXTFRAMETV transformed the gallery into a fusion of color and technology, where artist’s creation seamlessly blends into each space with immersive visuals.”

Overall, The “Seamless Art, Beyond Space” exhibit showcased the potential of the TCL NXTFRAME TV to revolutionize art, inspiring artists to explore new creative possibilities. It also showed that TCL is a brand that supports not just current art but future artistic exploration.

Leveraging on CIMB’s robust underwriting capabilities, LazPayLater, which is Lazada’s flagship buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) product that provides customers with convenient access to credit within the Lazada platform, is now also powered by CIMB.

“When we first partnered with Lazada for LazPayLater, we always had the goal of not only championing financial inclusion but credit inclusion in the Philippines as well, which is why we have over 8.5 million customers of which 3.5 million enjoy access to our credit facility. True to our mission as we pioneered mobile digital banking in the Philippines, we are going beyond credit-related inclusion on the Lazada platform and expanding our efforts to also help Filipinos grow their savings as well, alongside earning rebates for their online purchases with Lazada, to help them achieve even more of their financial needs and life goals,” said Vijay Manoharan, CEO of CIMB Bank PH.

Ant International introduces Sustainability Impact Scorecard for MSMEs to access new green financing opportunities

Ant International, a global digital payment and financial services leader, in collaboration with its industry partners, are developing an industry-first MSME Sustainability Impact Scorecard (“MSME S-Card”), a digital solution designed to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Asia to track their environmental and social impact in an verified and convenient way based on applicable standards and requirements, to better integrate sustainability into their business operations.

The MSME S-Card leverages Ant International’s experience and partnerships in digital innovation and platforms, automating the collection of key data within existing business processes and digital wallets to build and validate MSME ESG credentials. By integrating ESG metrics in this streamlined and digital way, the scorecard offers MSMEs actionable insights for aligning with sustainability standards, enhancing their ESG credibility, attracting impact-focused investors, and supporting long-term sustainable growth in line with global market expectations.

Leiming Chen, chief sustainability officer, Ant International, said: “One of the key priorities when we launched Programme Sirius earlier this year was to address the critical challenge of sustainability inclusion for MSMEs, who are being left behind in the global shift towards sustainability, missing out on new opportunities. We hope that the MSME S-Card, the first initiative under Programme Sirius, will offer a benchmark for MSMEs and financial institutions to work together to support MSMEs’ sustainability journey, enabling them to contribute to a shared vision for a better future while gaining practical benefits from sustainable payments, ESG reporting, and green financing.”

In March 2024, Ant International unveiled Programme Sirius (Sustainability Innovation for Regenerative & Inclusive Purpose) — supported by partners like the IFC, Gprnt and 13 Asia-Pacific fintech leaders at its inaugural launch — an industry-led knowledge initiative to empower MSMEs in their transition towards sustainability, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

As Technology Partner to Programme Sirius, Gprnt will build on its expertise in harnessing technology to simplify how environmental, social and governance (ESG) data is collected and accessed, and share best practices and community outreach in driving MSME sustainability with Ant International. Gprnt, the world’s first regulator-launched digital platform for ESG reporting and data, will also act as a data reporting partner, and will further bolster transparency and help support MSMEs’ efforts to achieve alignment with applicable regional standards.

Lionel Wong, executive director, Gprnt, said: “We are excited to reaffirm our partnership with Ant International to collaborate on Programme Sirius, an important initiative for promulgating MSMEs’ access to solutions that help them commence their sustainability journeys. The launch of the MSME S-Card could not have come at a better time, happening in lockstep with Gprnt’s launch of its own automated Disclosure and Marketplace tools, which are designed to simplify sustainability reporting for all businesses, and connect them to an ecosystem of solutions to support their financing and decarbonisation needs.”

Addressing challenges MSMEs face in adopting sustainable practices

Accounting for 90% of businesses and over half of Asia’s workforce, MSMEs are vital to the region’s economy. Yet, they often face obstacles in adopting sustainable practices, including

    • Lack of Knowledge: Unlike large corporations driven by ESG reporting requirements, MSMEs often lack awareness of ESG practices, which limits their ability to engage in sustainability initiatives. This knowledge gap is particularly notable in developing countries, where access to information and resources is limited.
    • Limited Resources: MSMEs face resource and financial barriers that make implementing sustainability practices difficult. While some may adopt simpler, green-certified solutions—such as solar-powered lighting or energy-efficient equipment—these options often come with high upfront costs. Many MSMEs, as part of the global value chain, are also increasingly requested to meet the complex sustainability demands of larger corporations.
    • Scarcity of Tailored Financial Products: Most green finance solutions offered by banks and financial institutions are geared toward larger corporations, leaving MSMEs underserved. These smaller enterprises require financing that aligns with their shorter investment horizons, smaller capital needs, and specific challenges. Without such tailored financial support, MSMEs struggle to fund their sustainable transitions effectively.

Leveraging digital platforms for seamless MSME reporting and transformation

Ant International’s global digital platform ecosystem partners play a crucial role in supporting MSMEs with seamless data connectivity and local expertise. The MSME S-Card bridges gaps between financial institutions and small businesses by enabling sustainability reporting through partnerships, such as with pilot participant GCash from the Philippines, who will further customize the scorecard benchmarks based on local needs.

Winsley Bangit, VP for New Businesses, GCash, said: “In the Philippines, MSMEs make up 99.5% of all businesses. However, many remain informal and lack access to financing and growth support, limiting their potential for resilience and innovation. GCash’s partnerships with global leaders like Ant International will help enable MSMEs to access both capital and practical support, promoting responsible growth in line with GCash’s purpose to uplift Filipinos’ everyday lives. Together, we’ll create a synergistic ecosystem combining capital, technology, and sustainability expertise.”

As an inaugural member of Programme Sirius, GCash has become a champion of financial inclusion in the Philippines economy by championing mobile financial services. Beyond financial inclusion, GCash is also committed to environmental and social sustainability, making it a leader in sustainable fintech globally. Through its GForest initiative, GCash has mobilized 17 million users to plant over 2.8 million trees, reducing carbon emissions by 138,000 metric tons. This reforestation effort not only contributes to environmental conservation but also provides livelihoods for over 8,600 farmers.

The pilot project by GCash is expected to launch by next year.
