We’ve been quivering to talk about it ever since we signed our NDA with hardware vendor ASUS, but the anointed time has finally come. Intel has officially announced its two new processors: the Intel Core i7-3960X processor Extreme Edition and the Intel Core i7-3930K processor, the first six-core client processors in the second-generation “Sandy Bridge” Intel Core processor family. The Intel Core i7-3960X and the Intel Core i7-3930K are fully unlocked, which means overclockers can go wild with these processors as they see fit. The new CPUs run at base speeds of 3.3 and 3.2 GHz with 15MB and 12MB of L3 cache respectively, and will go on Intel’s X79 Express chipset that supports this new LGA 2011 socket platform. So aside from the blazingly fast speeds, what else do you get? Well, you’ll be getting 6Gb/s Serial ATA (SATA) ports and additional PCIe 2.0 lanes, as well as quad-channel memory support. Performance doesn’t come cheap, and although we don’t have local prices for these things yet, we’ve seen them going for $1,050 and $600 respectively at newegg.com. Ouch. We’ll tell you what we think as soon as we get the units in.
