Mac users have no excuse to hit the Mac App Store today and download the latest version of OS X, 10.9 Mavericks. As announced in Apple’s recently concluded fall event where they launched the iPad Air and Mini with Retina display, this major software update is free to everyone running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and up.
With OS X 10.9 Mavericks, Apple promises refined software and some welcome upgrades, like the inclusion of iBooks, Maps, and tabs within Finder. Safari gains a Shared Links panel, which consolidates links shared by people you follow on Twitter and LinkedIn. Calendar gets a facelift as well, providing users with a map with weather forecast and the ability to estimate travel time between appointments.
The update also comes with a new interactive Notification Center, now allowing users to reply to a message or respond to a FaceTime call without leaving the current app.
Core technologies contained in Mavericks were made to improve your Mac’s battery life and system performance. A function called App Nap helps reduce power consumption. Compressed Memory, meanwhile, shrinks inactive data to help make your Mac more responsive. The update also includes enhanced multiple display support, optimized OpenCL support and dynamic video memory allocation.
