Since its establishment in 2022, the Husay ng SokSay: An Inter-High School Competition has grown into a premier platform for cultivating interest in the social sciences among the youth. Over the years, it has consistently expanded its reach—engaging more than 100 schools nationwide and drawing 74 participating institutions in 2024. Beyond numbers, the event has become a meaningful space for students to discover the relevance of social sciences in addressing contemporary issues, fostering critical thinking, and inspiring collective action.
The 4th Husay ng SokSay, organized by the UPLB Sociology Society, is set to once again highlight the relevance of social sciences by putting Filipino lived experiences at the center of discussion. Now celebrating its 50th year, the organization continues its enduring mission of promoting the social sciences, especially among the youth, by fostering engagement, relevance, and connection to everyday realities through its annual academic event. With this year’s theme, “Mga Kwentong Buhay: Hamunin ang mga Naratibo, Balangkasin ang Katotohanan,” the competition invites students to critically examine stories that shape society and question the narratives often taken as truth.
At a time when misinformation, stereotypes, and oversimplified explanations dominate public discourse, the 4th Husay ng SokSay emerges as a timely introduction to sociological thinking by connecting these conditions to everyday realities. It serves as a platform for young thinkers to reflect on how social structures affect ordinary Filipino lives. The event challenges participants to look beyond surface-level experiences and uncover social conditions related to class, gender, culture, power, and inequality. By grounding analysis in personal and community stories, the competition emphasizes that truth is not singular, but shaped by perspective and context.
The 4th Husay ng SokSay is open to Junior High School and Senior High School students and features a wide range of competitions designed to cater to different forms of expression. These include Essay Writing, Speech Competition, Mobile Phone Photography, and Short Film Making. Each category allows participants to translate social science concepts into creative outputs, whether through written arguments, spoken narratives, visual storytelling, or cinematic interpretation. Through these competitions, students are encouraged to merge creativity with critical thinking.
Beyond competition, the event aims to cultivate social awareness and responsibility among the youth. Participants are urged not only to tell stories, but also to question whose voices are heard, whose are ignored, and why certain narratives persist in society. In doing so, Husay ng SokSay underscores the role of social sciences in understanding social issues and inspiring collective action.
