The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) Philippine Cup returns this week with Race Weekend 2 at Clark International Speedway, marking the resumption of Toyota Motor Philippines’ premier racing series after its March break. Beyond the on-track competition, this year’s event places sustainability in the spotlight by transforming the race circuit into what Toyota describes as a “rolling laboratory” for biofuel testing under competitive racing conditions.
Racing meets sustainable mobility
Race Weekend 2 takes place from July 9 to 11, 2026, at Clark International Speedway in Mabalacat, Pampanga. It is the second of four race weekends scheduled for the 2026 season following the successful opening round in Riverpark, Cavite, where more than 6,000 spectators witnessed the debut of the Tamaraw Racing Class featuring the locally built Tamaraw one-make race car.
This weekend, Toyota will use the Vios One-Make Race (OMR) and Tamaraw OMR race cars to evaluate the performance of 5% coco-biodiesel (B5) and 20% bioethanol (E20) blends under the extreme demands of motorsport competition. The high-performance environment allows engineers to study fuel efficiency, reliability, and overall vehicle performance in conditions far more demanding than everyday driving.
A testbed for future fuels
“Motorsports has always been a testbed for progress, and this season, TGR Philippines will take a step forward by actively exploring alternative fuels in competitive racing conditions,” said Elijah Marcial, first vice president for Vehicle Sales Operations at Toyota Motor Philippines.
She added that testing biofuels during racing provides valuable data on performance, efficiency, and reliability, supporting the broader adoption of low-carbon fuels in the Philippines.
Toyota also noted that three-quarters of its Toyota and Lexus gasoline-powered models are already compatible with E20 fuel, while all Toyota diesel models support B5 biodiesel blends, demonstrating the company’s continued commitment to fuel flexibility.
Supporting Toyota’s carbon neutrality strategy
According to Elvin Luciano, vice president for Government and Industry Affairs at Toyota Motor Philippines, alternative fuels form part of the company’s multi-pathway approach toward reducing carbon emissions.
“As a company committed to reducing carbon emissions, we recognize that every activity must contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable future,” Luciano said, adding that biofuels help reduce dependence on petroleum while supporting Toyota’s long-term carbon neutrality goals.
