    Where to, for the holidays?

    MobilityTravelWhere to, for the holidays?

The holidays are upon us, and that means a whole lot of merry gatherings! This year is also doubly special as most pandemic restrictions have finally been lifted. So to make your Christmas gathering even more special, here are some destinations you can go to and what you need to prepare for.

Make it a Christmas on the beach

Christmas has always presented itself as a cool holiday, with images of ice and snow. However, for us in the Pacific, this vision is largely a myth, with the weather just being slightly cooler but still tropical.

Still, you can make your holiday season extra special by spending it at the beach! With most of the country’s beaches back in full swing, why not take the whole clan with you and spend an extra memorable holiday at sea? If you’re in Luzon why not visit La Union’s famous San Juan beach and catch some waves with your kin? If you want to fly, why not visit Siquijor and have a relaxing stay at this mystical island?

    What you need to know:

Most of the country is already open to local tourists. This means you don’t need to get tested prior to entry nor have any apps on standby. However, protocols still differ per area, so you might be asked to present travel/health documents. Make sure to check local guidelines at your destination. Also, always carry your vaccination cards (or a digital copy) as you’ll never know when you might need them.

    Spend Christmas in the wildness

If the beach is not your cup of tea, why not head toward the mountains? Camping in the country’s mountains may be the next big thing for your clan. It’s a great bonding experience with young and old all pitching in their part to start camp.

There’s also the serenity and quiet of the wilderness that help you reconnect to each other and to mother nature. Plus the lack of cell sites and quick power access means tech won’t be a hindrance to your bonding experience for the holidays.

Should you prefer the modern world conveniences, there are also “glamping” sites all over. Glamorous camping or “glamping” is camping in luxury mode. Campsites function akin to resorts that come with many fun amenities such as air-conditioned rooms, hot and cold showers, wi-fi, and electricity, among others.

    What you need to know:

Like the beach, going camping in different provinces would entail following their local protocol and guidelines so make sure to keep updated before going. You’ll also want to know what the campsites offer, or you might end up sleeping on just the ground. Being outside, you’ll also need to consider the weather, the wildlife (more of the creepy crawly side), and the terrain to get to the campsite. Also prepare loads of sunscreen, water, food, and first aid.

    Travel abroad

Travel restrictions have also been lifted in most other countries, and airlines are using this opportunity to recuperate losses by offering huge discounts on both domestic and international flights. So why not take this opportunity to spend your Christmas with loved ones abroad?

While we are known as the most festive Christmas country, experiencing other traditions in other countries will help kids and adults alike be more open-minded to other cultures. Most of the world does celebrate Christmas, but their ways are certainly different from ours. For example, Japan celebrates it more as a special day rather than a holiday. Consider flying to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and the rest of Southeast Asia, as these are the destinations with the most discounted fares from airlines.

    What you need to know:

Not all countries have the same COVID protocols so you need to diligently research their guidelines when entering the country. You’ll need to know the travel requirements like visas for the countries you’re visiting. Beyond that, you’ll also need to be vaccinated with at least one booster shot in order to re-enter the Philippines. You’ll need to fill out the One Health Pass prior to your flight back so best be prepared.

    The old reliable staycation

If going out is too much, you can always rely on the good ‘ole staycation within the metro. Holidays are also promo season for most of the local hotels within the city offering decent rates. There’s no better way to relieve stress than to have a relaxing stay at a hotel. A fun tip is to try and book early for larger discounts.

You can also opt to stay in a hotel near the city’s myriad shopping malls so you can enjoy a bit of shopping without the dreaded holiday rush. Plus staying near the mall would let you enjoy the lights or fireworks shows from a vantage point. Not one for shopping? How about dining at the different Christmas feasts offered this time of year? Also, try bringing some board or card games and spend some quality time with the kids.

    What you need to know:

Staycations may be the most worry-free option on the list. As the metro eases restrictions, you’ll probably only need your vaccine certificate when staying in a hotel. You can book your stay, and relax when you get there. You can check out the fun onsite activities offered, such as Christmas displays, buffets, and even fireworks shows.

Everything is opening up for the Christmas season, and we finally have options about where we can celebrate. Still, with all the excitement and hustle and bustle, we need to remember what the holidays are about… family. Cherish the holiday season together with your loved ones.

    Happy holidays everyone!
