CLSU holds successful business masterclass and tradeshow for MSMEs and future business leaders

The Central Luzon State University (CLSU) College of Business and Accountancy (CBA), CLSU University Extension Program Office (UEPO), CLSU Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and the CLSU Junior Marketing Association (JMA), in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry – Nueva Ecija Provincial Office (DTI-NEPO), hosted an event titled “Partnership for Sustainable Development: A Business Tradeshow and Business Master Class” at the FPJ Communication Hall on October 1-2, 2024.

The event gathered 2,411 participants, including visitors, students, alumni, and distinguished guests. Its primary goal was to inspire students to connect with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from Nueva Ecija and explore collaborative opportunities, enhancing their critical thinking and business skills.

Dr. Karenina B. Romualdo, acting vice president for University Business Affairs Program, shared an inspiring thought: “This program is not just a mere requirement; it has a ripple effect on all organisms of the business ecosystem.”  This statement captures how the event went beyond academics, helping students and MSMEs build meaningful connections.

The event was also attended by university officials headed by Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, vice president for Academic Affairs. Velasco expressed his gratitude to Aifee Rei L. Galapon, DTI-NE Division Chief, Business Development for collaborating with CLSU, and commended CBA as well as the CLSU Junior Marketing Association (JMA) for spearheading the activity and for managing event logistics.

On the second day, the Business Masterclass, led by the CLSU Intellectual Property Office (IPO), focused on helping MSMEs protect their business identities. Participants learned about crucial topics such as copyright, trademark, patent, utility model, and industrial design. These sessions provided a foundational understanding of intellectual property, emphasizing its significance in building and safeguarding strong brands. By the end of the masterclass, attendees felt more empowered to manage their brands effectively, equipping them for future success in the marketplace.

In closing, the event not only highlighted the importance of protecting business identities but also reinforced the vital role of education and community in fostering innovation and growth. It served as a platform for knowledge exchange, where students gained insights directly from MSME owners, and entrepreneurs discovered fresh perspectives from the next generation of business leaders.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia 2024: Taj Izrin Aiman from Malaysia secures victory in a thrilling showdown

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) GT Cup Asia 2024 has culminated in a heart-pounding finale as 15 of the region’s top e-Motorsports racers faced off at the Connexion Conference and Event Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Racers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand competed in three exhilarating races on world-class circuits, all vying for the title of Asia Champion and the chance to represent the region in the TGR GT Cup Global Finals in Amsterdam in December.

Taj Izrin Aiman from Malaysia emerged as the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024 Individual Champion with a total of 65 points, securing a well-deserved victory following a series of dramatic races. In second place, Andika Rama from Indonesia, the returning 2023 Individual Champion, showcased relentless determination, finishing with 57 points. Fellow Indonesian, Moreno Pratama, in his first time placing in the Asia finals, claimed third on the podium with 48. The consistent performance from Rama and his fellow teammates also earned Indonesia the coveted Country Championship title.

The TGR GT Cup Asia 2024 competition, held on Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation5 (PS5) and PlayStation4 (PS4), saw a blend of strategic prowess, precision driving, and bold moves across three races. Fans were treated to an unforgettable showdown on iconic tracks like Sardegna Windmills, Nürburgring Grand Prix (GP), and Fuji International Speedway.

“The heart of Toyota, and GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia has always been about fostering a community of excellence rooted in our Japanese practice of Kaizen, or Continuous Improvement. In this fifth edition, it is inspiring to witness not only the ongoing enthusiasm from our drivers and supporters but also the technological advancements driven by e-Motorsports. We’re excited to contribute to this growth in the region as racers showcase exceptional talent and help shape the future of e-motorsports,” said Toyota Motor Asia (TMA) general manager Jaja Ishibashi. “A heartfelt congratulations to all the racers for their remarkable performance today, and all the best to Aiman and Rama as they advance to the Global Finals!”

TMA general manager for Vehicle Design Engineering Panat Leelavansuk shared, “From mastering iconic tracks that reflect real-world conditions to integrating insights from actual motorsports, the skill level on display from all participants is impressive. With the support of Razer’s headsets this year, racers were also able to communicate with their teams, exchanging tips and strategies. I’m thrilled to witness the passion and dedication of today’s youth, who are shaping the future of e-sports, as showcased in this year’s GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia. Congratulations to all the winners—your talent is setting new benchmarks for competitive gaming!”

Three Thrilling Races Define the 2024 Regional Finals

With five stunning livery designs representing each country, the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024 competition began with sunny weather on its first-ever rally track, the Sardegna Windmills circuit, where drivers took the wheel of the GR Yaris. Rama took the lead early on, only facing slight competition in the early laps before finishing as the winner of the first race. Throughout most of the race, the most intense action occurred mid-race, where drivers from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia battled it out. A close fight for all, the race ended with lap timings for all drivers separated by less than half a minute.

The second race at Nürburgring GP featured drivers in the GR Corolla Morizo Edition ’22, with a reverse grid for the top eight finishers from race one, placing the first race winner in eighth position, and so on. Pratama used this to his advantage – placing eighth in the first race, Pratama stayed within the top three positions throughout the circuit, eventually coming out on top as the second race’s winner. Malaysia’s team strategy also worked in their favor, with two of their driver’s taking up second and third position. Rain also came into play for this race, creating a challenging track that led to many position changes for several drivers.

The final showdown tested racers’ strategies to the limit with the technically challenging Fuji International Speedway, known for its tough last sector coming out into the straights. Driving on the GR010 Hybrid ’21, Pratama battled fiercely to take fourth place from Malaysia’s Iqbal Suji, with both drivers employing strategic offensive and defensive maneuvers. The Indonesian driver ultimately made his move, overtaking in the final laps of the race. This third race also saw a heavy amount of contact, with more than one racer spinning out and resulting penalties served. Opting for soft tires at the start, while many of his competitors chose mediums, Aiman maintained his lead and secured the win through a well-timed pit stop strategy.

“I’m truly at a loss for words. Although I faced technical difficulties and couldn’t finish the race last year, I’m overwhelmed with pride that my dedication and training have paid off, leading to a victory at the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024,” said an emotional Aiman. “I’m excited to continue training with Andika Rama as we prepare for the Global Cup in Amsterdam. A heartfelt thank you to Toyota Motor Asia for this incredible opportunity!”

“I’m honored to be representing Asia once again this year! Competing against Taj Aiman was an incredible challenge—he’s an exceptional competitor. I pushed myself to the limit, but his consistency and strategy across all three races were unmatched. I’m excited to have him as a teammate as we prepare for the Global Finals, and I can’t wait to make Asia proud,” said Andika Rama, representing Asia for the second time this year.

Special awards were also given for drivers’ exceptional performances, with Aiman cinching Driver of the Day, the Philippines’ Russel Reyes taking home Best Racecraft, and Rama winning Fastest Race Pace.

The TGR GT Cup Asia Finals 2024 welcomed Razer Inc. as its official headset partner. Racers were equipped with wired Razer BlackShark V2 X e-sports headsets, ensuring seamless, clear, and comfortable communication with their teams.

The championship was determined from cumulative points earned through finishing positions across all three races, the first five positions in qualifying rounds, and bonus points for the fastest laps. The top three individuals and teams each received a cash prize of USD8,000, USD4,500 and, USD3,000, respectively. With their victories secured, Aiman and Andika will represent Asia at the TGR GT Cup Global Finals on December 6 in Amsterdam, facing off against the world’s best e-Motorsports racers.

BPI urges public to stay alert against holiday cyber scams

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) reminds the public to remain vigilant as cybercrime remains a major concern in the Philippines. Don’t let the cyber grinch steal your Christmas. ‘Tis the season to shop with extra caution. Cybercrimes are expected to peak during the holiday period as online shopping surges.

“As the holiday season nears, it is important that consumers stay alert against the rising number of cyber scams. Cybercriminals ramp up scams during this festive season through fraudulent emails, fake websites, and other online threats. By staying informed and cautious, we can protect our personal and financial information from falling into the wrong hands,” said Jonathan Paz, BPI Enterprise information security and data protection officer.

    BPI

In 2023, global cybersecurity company Kaspersky warned Filipinos of typical phishing attacks during the holiday season. According to a survey by Statista, 8 in 10 Filipinos intend to shop during holiday sales, and 7 in 10 plan to shop both in physical and online shops. During the season, people often purchase apparel and footwear, consumer electronics, and children’s toys and games, but scammers try to take advantage of potential victims who are not on guard.

To avoid getting scammed this holiday period, BPI released several tips for the public to consider:

    1. Avoid using a public Wi-Fi connection when doing your online transactions.
    2. Do not accept help from any stranger when using ATMs.
    3. Never share your One-Time PIN (OTP) with anyone, even if they claim to be from your bank.
    4. Do not click on random links if you receive an email or text message, especially from an unknown sender.
    5. Before doing your online shopping, ensure that you are on a legitimate website. Scammers can create fake accounts of real companies.
    6. Apart from keeping your bank online accounts safe, use secure digital wallets, as they may be targeted by fraudsters.
    7. Do not put all your cards and IDs in just one wallet, as the risk is very high once it gets lost or stolen. Immediately block and report your account if this happens.

“BPI is committed to helping consumers be more vigilant against cyber-related crimes by promoting cyber hygiene, which refers to practices that build resilience against online attacks. We should always remember that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,” said Paz.

Annually, BPI invests significant resources for IT and cybersecurity systems and building best-in-class digital platforms, which forms part of its commitment to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity efforts, especially in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).

Chief among the new features is the extension of Shorts to up to three minutes long, a highly requested feature among creators. The longer format will be available starting October 15, granting you greater flexibility to express yourselves and share more immersive narratives.

    Other updates include:

Streamlined Player and Immersive Templates: The YouTube Shorts player has been refined to prioritize content, ensuring your work takes center stage. Additionally, the introduction of templates simplifies the creation process, letting you easily jump on the latest trends and add your unique spin.

Seamless Integration with YouTube: You can now leverage the vast universe of YouTube content directly from your Shorts camera. From there, you can easily access seamless remixing of clips from favorite videos, music videos, and more, offering unprecedented creative possibilities.

Enhanced Community Engagement: The new trends page on mobile helps you stay up-to-date with the latest trends, while comment previews provide a glimpse into conversations before diving in.

A More Personalized Experience: To cater to your individual preferences, YouTube is introducing the option to “Show fewer Shorts.” With this, you can customize your feed to prioritize long-form content or other interests.

With these welcome updates, YouTube Shorts looks to become an even more dynamic and engaging platform for both creators and fans alike.

Stronger together: The intertwined relationship between physical and mental health

In celebration of World Mental Health Day on October 10, an international day for raising awareness on mental health, LAC Philippines highlights the inseparable connection between physical and mental health. As we strive for a healthier life, it’s crucial to recognize that these two aspects of well-being are intricately intertwined.

The Mental Health Crisis in the Philippines

Mental health conditions are a global concern, affecting approximately one in eight people worldwide as reported by the World Health Organizations (WHO). In the Philippines, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO)  mental health illnesses rank third in terms of morbidity. Studies also indicate that stress, anxiety, and depression are prevalent mental health issues in the country. These statistics underscore the need to prioritize mental health and seek support when needed.

The Relationship of Mental Health and Physical Health

Mental health conditions can significantly impact physical health. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institute of Mental Health, individuals with mental health disorders are at a higher risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Moreover, NIMH also reported that stress, anxiety, and depression can weaken the immune system, making individuals more vulnerable to infections and illnesses.

Engaging in regular physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Additionally, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, stress management, and regular intake of supplements are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. These factors can contribute to both physical and mental well-being.

Globe reiterates public warning against SMS spoofing, calls for increased vigilance

Globe renews its call for the public to exercise vigilance against SMS spoofing, a sophisticated scam tactic that has seen a resurgence in recent months, with fraudsters using names of reputable organizations to take advantage of customers’ trust.

Spoofing involves fraudsters impersonating legitimate SMS sender IDs, including Globe and other organizations, to trick recipients into believing that the messages are authentic. This technique has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in Metro Manila, despite the implementation of SIM registration last year aimed at curbing SMS fraud.

Customers have reported receiving spoofed messages that mimic Globe’s sender ID, enticing them with fraudulent links or else hooking them with claims of account problems. These deceptive messages aim to steal personal and sensitive information, which can grant scammers access to online accounts such as social media profiles, e-wallets, and bank accounts.

Globe is taking proactive steps to combat spoofing, including issuing public warnings, collaborating with industry partners and law enforcement agencies to apprehend scammers, and investing in advanced security measures to detect and block spoofed messages.

“Spoofing is a form of cybercrime that is becoming increasingly difficult to detect. We urge everyone to be extra cautious with any SMS that asks for personal information or prompts to click on a link. Globe will never send a clickable link in its official customer advisories,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.

Spoofing is a global concern, facilitated by the use of illegal devices known as International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catchers or fake cell towers. These devices can intercept mobile communications within a certain radius, allowing fraudsters to send messages with spoofed sender IDs that bypass network spam filters.

Globe urges the public to report any suspicious messages to its customer service channels and to follow these digital security best practices:

    • Never click on links from unknown sources.
    • Never share personal information via SMS.
    • Regularly update your knowledge on the latest scam tactics.
    • Be wary of unsolicited messages that offer deals that seem too good to be true.
    • Turn on spam filters on your phone, if feature is available.

By raising awareness and promoting collective vigilance, Globe aims to protect its customers and the public from these harmful practices.
