Mitsubishi Motors PH records highest sales volume in FY 2023

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) recorded its highest annual sales volume for the fiscal year (FY) 2023, with 81,473 units sold from April 2023 to March 2024. With this volume, MMPC secured an 18.5%1 market share in the industry. This remarkable sales achievement emphasizes the company’s unwavering dedication to providing top-notch products and services for the continuous satisfaction of customers.

Compared to the previous fiscal year, MMPC recorded a significant sales growth of 34% from its 60,630 unit sales last FY 2022. Notably, the Mirage, Xpander, and L300 emerged as the top-selling models, respectively, leading the sales charts for MMPC. With the higher production capacity of its plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, MMPC was able to locally produce more CKD units and sell 26,139 units of Mirage and 13,101 units of L300. The Mitsubishi Xpander has also been hailed as the best-selling MPV this year with its 24,178 units sales volume, as certified by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI).

While there are many external factors, MMPC’s sales growth can be mainly attributed to the competitive promotions implemented, new product and Special Action Models offerings, and strategic marketing campaigns. The timely introduction of the All-New Triton in January 2024 contributed to the remarkable sales growth. Furthermore, through several initiatives such as the MMPC 60th anniversary expo and All New Triton Go Beyond Limits Tour in different key locations to name a few, MMPC was able to reinforce excellent customer experience for all its models.

“We focused on a customer-centric approach the past years, aiming to provide a wonderful car life experience to Filipinos. We highlighted EXPERIENCE as an important part of a customer’s purchasing journey. And we’re very grateful to our valued customers, dealers, suppliers, and business partners for their positive feedback on this approach and for their continued support of the Mitsubishi Motors brand.”, said Takeshi Hara, president & CEO of MMPC.

In addition to achieving the highest sales volume by far in MMPC’s history, MMPC also remains committed to its corporate social responsibility initiatives, contributing to the sustainable development of communities and the environment. The company’s holistic approach to business reflects its vision of creating a better world through mobility, innovation, and responsible practices.

Ending FY 2023 on a high note, MMPC aims to maintain the momentum and continue to drive towards further growth and success for FY 2024. With an already exciting product lineup and additional new models to be introduced within the year, the company is well-positioned to continue exceeding expectations and shaping the future of the automotive industry in the Philippines.

Milieu Insight survey finds 55% of Southeast Asians are ready for domestic travel; prioritizing safety and budget-friendly destinations

As the summer season approaches, Southeast Asia anticipates a surge in domestic travel with the Philippines and Indonesia having the highest interest in travelling domestically. However, for many travelers in the region, safety and costs are key considerations. Milieu Insight, a leading survey software company in Southeast Asia, has published its latest report on summer travel plans for Southeast Asians.

The quantitative study conducted by Milieu Insight’s proprietary survey community polls 1,966 individuals from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. According to the report, over 6 in 10 respondents prioritize safety and cost when choosing domestic travel destinations and 55% are willing to travel domestically this year.

“Our report highlights the summer travel plans of many Southeast Asians. As people seek to explore their own countries, affordability and safety are key factors driving their choice,” said Gerald Ang, founder and CEO of Milieu Insight. “At the same time, many travelers in Asia are increasingly budget-driven, and they are embracing family-oriented experiences, by finding value in land transportation and road trips.”

Inflation leads to budget-conscious travelers, but safety comes first

With inflation driving prices high and international travel being costly1, domestic leisure travel is expected to remain strong among Southeast Asians. Travelers across Southeast Asia are becoming increasingly budget-conscious, prioritizing financial considerations in their vacation planning.

While cost remains a top consideration for 62% of travelers in Southeast Asia, safety takes precedence, with 63% prioritizing secure destinations and scenic spots. This trend highlights the importance for marketers to promote local destinations known for their safety.

    Embracing road trips

Land transport emerges as the preferred choice for domestic vacations, with a significant 74% of travelers opting for this mode of transportation. 88% of Thai and 76% of Indonesian travelers prefer traveling by land when exploring domestic destinations.

Seeking family-focused travel experiences like food trips

79% of travelers in Southeast Asia are planning to embark on their adventures with their families in tow. Families are prioritizing quality time together, seeking to create cherished memories while exploring local hidden gems.

Another compelling aspect of travel emerges for families: culinary exploration and immersive touring experiences. More than half surveyed are keen on making their domestic travels about food and immersive touring experiences where they get the opportunity to taste local flavors and visit landmarks.

Preference for hotels, yet Airbnb and pool villas gain traction

Hotels emerge as the preferred choice, capturing 78% of preferences across all surveyed countries. Despite this preference for traditional lodging, unique alternatives are gaining momentum.

In Malaysia, 44% of travelers opt for personalized experiences offered by Airbnb, while in Thailand, 47% are drawn to the luxury and exclusivity of pool villas.

As Southeast Asia gears up for summer travel, there is an increased willingness for most travelers to escape to domestic destinations due to proximity and costs. This shift underscores a pragmatic mindset amidst evolving global circumstances like flight prices and inflation, with safety and cost considerations taking precedence in travel planning.

The study, conducted via Milieu Insight’s proprietary survey community, offers a comprehensive understanding of Southeast Asian summer travel plans, highlighting key insights and travel trends. Representative of the online adult population aged 16 and above, the fieldwork was carried out from 7th to 31st March 2024.

Globe hits SIMs engaged in spam and scam SMS

Globe, the country’s mobile leader, has significantly ramped up its efforts to combat cyber threats by deactivating and blocking an increasing number of SIMs engaged in malicious activities.

In the first quarter of 2024 alone, the company blacklisted 36,549 SIMs from other networks, a 62% spike compared to the 22,455 competitor SIMs blocked during the same period last year.

The drastic year-on-year increase underscores Globe’s intensified campaign to identify and take down errant SIMs involved in SMS spam blasts, online fraud schemes, and other illicit activities.

Globe also deactivated 841 SIMs from its network in Q1 2024 after they were identified as potential sources of spam or scam SMS, or misuse. This figure marks a 30% year-on-year increase from the 647 Globe SIMs deactivated in Q1 2023.

“We have zero tolerance for abusive SIMs that undermine network security and compromise customer experience. Our accelerated deactivation efforts demonstrate our unwavering resolve to fight these cybersecurity threats head-on,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s chief information security officer.

SIM abuse cases are detected through Globe’s monitoring systems and customer reports via its Stop Spam portal.  The company promptly deactivates those SIMs to safeguard its customers and service quality.

Given the risk these SIMs pose to personal and financial information, Globe urges customers to remain alert. This includes steering clear of unfamiliar links, disregarding requests for personal details or one-time PINs, and promptly reporting any dubious messages via the Stop Spam portal.

The company’s offensive against compromised SIMs is part of its cybersecurity measures to detect and neutralize malicious SMS traffic more effectively. Globe has also partnered with other industry players including telcos, banks, online retail platforms, and concerned government agencies in threat intelligence sharing.

“Cybersecurity demands continuous effort and investment to stay ahead of emerging threats. Our intensified deactivation of rogue SIMs reaffirms our commitment to delivering a secure and anxiety-free experience for Globe customers,” said Bonifacio.

With a multi-pronged strategy of technological upgrades, industry collaboration, and customer education, Globe seeks to fortify its cybersecurity posture and maintain leadership in protecting consumers from spam, scams, and other cyber threats.

Globe works closely with stakeholders to battle fraud. It has partnered with government agencies, including the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG), to jointly clamp down on fraudsters.  Collaboration with law enforcers has led to successful operations against cybercriminals.

Globe customers may support the campaign against fraud by exercising vigilance and reporting cases via Globe’s Stop Spam portal or the PNP ACG via 0968 867 4302.

Globe also calls on mobile phone users to be wary of emerging fraud tactics occurring outside telco networks, such as scam messages sent via over-the-top messaging apps and spoofing.  There have been rising cases of scams sent via chat apps and spoofing, costing victims their hard-earned money.

Camping Coastlines: A First Timer’s Beach Camping Realizations

To cap off March, my wife and I went on a beach camping trip at Stilts Calatagan Beach Resort—our first time roughing it instead of opting for a proper room or a nipa hut. This was partly because we wanted to go to the beach and partly because we wanted to get our money’s worth out of the tent we bought late last year. Great way to hit two birds with one stone, right? If you’re looking to go camping for the first time as well, here are some tips and realizations from our sandy overnight escapade.

Depending on where you are going, you won’t need to go all-in with camping equipment

Due to excitement, I spent a few weeks before the camping trip going on online shopping platforms and adding every camping related item I could find into my cart. Mini charcoal grills, extremely compact butane stoves, folding tables and chairs, hammocks, tarpaulin buckets, stackable camping cookware and utensils, fairy lights, power stations, and portable fans. You name it, it was in my cart. Thankfully, my wife knocked some sense into me with some pretty good arguments. First, I’m going to have to carry most of what we bring—equipment and food—into the campsite. Second, it’s only going to be an overnight trip, so most of these items won’t even see much use. Third, I’m going to have to stow these into and out of the car, and into and out of our third-floor apartment up three flights of stairs. Fourth and last, we will need to find long-term storage for these items in our apartment. And just like that, the desire to buy more was gone.

True enough, upon arriving at the campsite and pitching our tent, I realized I did not really need all those equipment. A tent, two chairs, a small folding table, a regular-sized butane stove, two rechargeable flash lights, two small rechargeable fans, and a self-inflating mattress—these were the things we already had and were all the camping things we really needed on the trip. For cookware and utensils, we brought what we already owned. Stilts had the rest of the things we needed, including grills and mood lighting.

Where and when you pitch your tent matters

Tree cover is a precious resource when beach camping. Having some shade can be the difference between your tent feeling warm and feeling like an oven. Therefore, it’s important to make sure you set up camp somewhere where you can chill away from direct sunlight. It’s also important to point out that the depth of the sand and the substrate should also be taken into account. In our case, although we were able to pick a shaded area for our camp, our tent stakes were barely long enough to reach the soil underneath the sand. This resulted in a longer setup time as strong gusts of winds from the sea were threatening to blow our tent away.

Additionally, consider pitching your tent earlier in the morning or later on in the day. Trying to set up a tent as huge as ours in the middle of the day was not a fun experience. In fact, I think I got sunburned more from pitching and taking down the tent than actually being in the water. Pitching your tent earlier on is also better as you will have first dibs on the optimal camp site and view.

Beach cooking and eating hits different

Pork chops, steaks, and veggies just hit different after a long day of hauling things, setting up camp, and frolicking in the water, especially if you grill them over charcoal. If it’s your first time trying to get charcoal going for a grill, then here are some tips. Take some brown paper bags and cardboard with you to serve as kindling; crumple these into a cone; and then in your grill, stack your charcoal around this cone, leaving just a tiny gap where you can light the kindling on fire. Once the kindling seems about to run out, begin gently fanning your charcoal mound to get the embers going. Your good to go once you see most of the charcoal smoldering on their own. Otherwise, feed more kindling and keep fanning the flames as necessary.

To keep food fresh until it is time to cook, I recommend investing in a good quality ice chest. Make sure to fully freeze your meats beforehand as well. On the day of your trip, pre-cool the chest with ice or cold water for a few minutes, dump any liquids out, and then transfer your meats from the freezer to the chest. Make sure to put in plenty of ice cubes as well to keep temperatures as low as possible for as long as possible. You can also freeze your drinks and keep it cool all throughout the day using this method.

    Keep your tech minimal

I originally planned on bringing a Macbook onto the beach for when I wanted to chill while binge-watching online videos. I then figured that an iPad would suffice as an entertainment device since I won’t be needing to type anything anyway. Ultimately, I decided that the vivo V30 Pro review unit we had was plenty big and plenty loud for multimedia viewing, as well as doubling as a potent camera. I also brought along a power bank to keep our fans, lights, and phones topped up. Not only will being a tech minimalist mean less things that need to be hauled into and out of the beach, but also less things you’ll have to worry about being stolen when you’re not within eyesight of your tent.

Writing this a few days after our trip made me miss the whole experience. The serenity, cool sea breeze, and far-from-work atmosphere was a much needed respite from the hustles and bustles of the metro. It’s an experience I would recommend to anyone, especially those on the fence if camping is right for them. If yours truly—a perennial office worker who loves sleep, comfort, and convenience—can find enjoyment in camping along a coastline, then most likely, you will too.

Test Drive: Ford Territory Titanium X

A year after its launch, the Ford Territory Titanium X continues to be a serious contender in the compact crossover SUV segment. Here’s our take on this ‘techie’ vehicle.

    Design 4.5/5

    Territory Titanium X

The front fascia of the Ford Territory Titanium X commands attention with its hexagonal grille. Flanked by sleek LED headlights, its daytime running lights (DRLs) create a striking signature. The substantial bumper adds ruggedness without compromising elegance.

Moving to the side profile, character lines flow gracefully, emphasizing the sleek silhouette. Prominent wheel arches and black cladding contribute to its robust appearance, with 19-inch alloy wheels completing the look. The rear design is clean and uncluttered, with LED taillights wrapping around the corners and a subtle roof spoiler adding a sporty touch.

Stepping inside the cabin reveals an interior with a tasteful mix of soft-touch materials and leather, creating a premium feel beyond what’s expected in this segment and price range. Storage options are plentiful, with cubbies and cup holders scattered throughout the cabin, perfect for stowing away drinks, phones, and other essentials. For longer trips, a hidden compartment under the cargo floor provides additional storage space.

    Equipment: 4.5/5

Ford hasn’t skimped on equipping the Territory Titanium X — in my opinion, surpassing category standards. It comes with a panoramic sunroof, a fully digital instrument cluster that can be customized to display various driving information, and a large touchscreen infotainment system. The system is user-friendly and responsive, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for generally seamless smartphone integration, although I experienced occasional glitches with Apple CarPlay dropping the connection when moving between cell sites or in areas with poor signals.

The Territory Titanium X boasts a number of thoughtful convenience features. I particularly appreciate the built-in air anion generator with PM2.5 monitoring, which offers the health benefits of reducing allergens and pollutants, neutralizing odor, and improving alertness. The power liftgate for hands-free access to the trunk is also a great add-on.

Safety is obviously a top priority for Ford, and the Territory Titanium X is well-equipped in that department with six airbags, anti-lock brakes with traction control, hill launch assist and rollover mitigation, and a security alarm system, among others. An advanced driver-assist technology suite comes standard, including a high-definition 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, tire pressure monitoring, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and collision mitigation system. These features can help prevent accidents and give you peace of mind on the road.

    User Experience: 4/5

Climbing into the Territory Titanium X reveals a spacious and comfortable cabin. The front seats offer ample support and adjustability, perfect for long drives. The driver’s seat even comes with 10-way power adjustments and lumbar support for added comfort. Both front driver and passenger seats are ventilated, keeping you cool and dry in the sweltering summer heat.

On the road, the Territory Titanium X delivers a smooth and quiet ride. The cabin is well-insulated from road noise and wind, making for a peaceful driving experience. The 1.5L EcoBoost turbocharged engine provides sufficient power for daily commutes and highway cruising. The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is generally smooth on long stretches but can be hesitant at low speeds and in stop-and-go traffic. To manage expectations, it is best to remember that the Territory Titanium X seems to prioritize a comfortable and composed ride over responsiveness and sporty handling.

The Territory Titanium X also boasts several features that enhance the user experience. The available ambient lighting allows you to personalize the cabin atmosphere, while the dual-zone climate control ensures everyone stays comfortable regardless of their temperature preferences. The rear seats also come with their own USB charging ports, keeping devices powered up for long journeys.

    Value: 4/5

The 2024 Ford Territory Titanium X is competitively priced at PHP1,599,000, offering a strong value proposition. I did not have sufficient time with the vehicle to adequately assess fuel efficiency, which some claim is not the Territory’s strongest suit, but its feature-rich interior, comfortable ride, comprehensive safety package, and overall modern design make it a compelling choice for families and city dwellers.

Cisco Hypershield reimagines security for data centers and clouds in era of AI

Cisco, the leader in security and networking, has unveiled a radically new approach to securing data centers and clouds in response to the increasing demands the AI revolution has put on IT infrastructure. Cisco is rearchitecting how we harness and protect AI and other modern workloads with industry-first, Cisco Hypershield. With this unprecedented innovation, Cisco is tipping the scales in favor of defenders, building on its recent announcements to accelerate AI infrastructure with Cisco’s ethernet switching, silicon, and compute portfolio.

Cisco Hypershield protects applications, devices, and data across public and private data centers, clouds, and physical locations — anywhere customers need it. Designed and built with AI in mind from the start, Hypershield enables organizations to achieve security outcomes beyond what has been possible with humans alone.

“Cisco Hypershield is one of the most significant security innovations in our history,” said Chuck Robbins, Cisco chair and CEO. “With our data advantage and strength in security, infrastructure, and observability platforms, Cisco is uniquely positioned to help our customers harness the power of AI.”

Hypershield is a revolutionary new security architecture. It’s built with technology originally developed for hyperscale public clouds and is now available for enterprise IT teams of all sizes. More a fabric than a fence, Hypershield enables security enforcement to be placed everywhere it needs to be. Every application service in the data center. Every Kubernetes cluster in the public cloud. Every container and virtual machine (VM). It can even turn every network port into a high-performance security enforcement point, bringing completely new security capabilities not just to clouds, but to the data center, on a factory floor, or a hospital imaging room. This new technology blocks application exploits in minutes and stops lateral movement in its tracks.

“AI has the potential to empower the world’s 8 billion people to have the same impact as 80 billion. With this abundance, we must reimagine the role of the data center – how data centers are connected, secured, operated and scaled,” said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager for Security and Collaboration at Cisco. “The power of Cisco Hypershield is that it can put security anywhere you need it – in software, in a server, or in the future, even in a network switch. When you have a distributed system that could include hundreds of thousands of enforcement points, simplified management is mission critical. And we need to be orders-of-magnitude more autonomous, at an orders-of-magnitude lower cost.”

Security enforcement with Hypershield happens at three different layers: in software, in virtual machines, and in network and compute servers and appliances, leveraging the same powerful hardware accelerators that are used extensively in high-performance computing and hyperscale public clouds.

Hypershield was built on three key pillars:

    • AI-Native: Built and designed from the start to be autonomous and predictive, Hypershield manages itself once it earns trust, making a hyper-distributed approach at scale possible.
    • Cloud-Native: Hypershield is built on open source eBPF, the default mechanism for connecting and protecting cloud-native workloads in the hyperscale cloud. Cisco acquired the leading provider of eBPF for enterprises, Isovalent, earlier this month.
    • Hyper-Distributed: Cisco is completely reimagining how traditional network security works by embedding advanced security controls into servers and the network fabric itself. Hypershield spans all clouds and leverages hardware acceleration like Data Processing Units (DPU) to analyze and respond to anomalies in application and network behavior. It shifts security closer to the workloads that need protection.

Cisco, with its industry-leading expertise in networking, security, and extensive partner ecosystem, together with NVIDIA, is committed to building and optimizing AI-native security solutions to protect and scale the data centers of tomorrow. This collaboration includes leveraging the NVIDIA Morpheus cybersecurity AI framework for accelerated network anomaly detection, as well as NVIDIA NIM microservices for powering custom security AI assistants for the enterprise. NVIDIA’s class of converged accelerators combine the power of GPU and DPU computing to augment Cisco Hypershield with robust security from cloud to edge.

“Enterprises across all industries are seeking the security that can protect them against ever expanding cyber threats,” said Kevin Deierling, senior vice president of Networking at NVIDIA. “Together, Cisco and NVIDIA are leveraging the power of AI to deliver powerful, incredibly secure data center infrastructure that will enable enterprises to transform their businesses and benefit customers everywhere.”

As a revolutionary new security architecture, Hypershield is solving three key customer challenges in defending against today’s sophisticated threat landscape:

    • Distributed Exploit Protection: Attackers are adept at weaponizing newly published vulnerabilities faster than defenders can patch. With defenders seeing nearly 100 new vulnerabilities every day, according to Cisco Talos Threat Intelligence, this can lead to catastrophic results. Hypershield delivers protection in minutes by automatically testing and deploying compensating controls into the distributed fabric of enforcement points.
    • Autonomous Segmentation: Once an attacker is in the network, segmentation is key to stopping their lateral movement. Hypershield perpetually observes, auto-reasons and re-evaluates existing policies to autonomously segment the network, solving this in large and complex environments.
    • Self-qualifying Upgrades: Hypershield automates the incredibly laborious and time-consuming process of testing and deploying upgrades once they are ready, leveraging a dual data plane. This completely new software architecture allows software upgrades and policy changes to be placed in a digital twin that tests updates using the customer’s unique combination of traffic, policies and features, then applying those updates with zero downtime.

Built into the Security Cloud, Cisco’s unified, AI-driven, cross-domain security platform, Cisco Hypershield is expected to be Generally Available in August 2024. With Cisco’s recent acquisition of Splunk, customers will gain unparalleled visibility and insights across their entire digital footprint for unprecedented security protection.

“AI is not just a force for good but also a tool used for nefarious purposes, allowing hackers to reverse engineer patches and create exploits in record time. Cisco looks to address an AI enabled problem with an AI solution as Cisco Hypershield aims to tip the scales back in favor of the defender by shielding new vulnerabilities against exploit in minutes – rather than the days, weeks or even months as we wait for patches to actually get deployed,” said Frank Dickson, group vice president, Security & Trust at IDC. “With the number of vulnerabilities ever increasing and the time for attackers to exploit them at scale ever decreasing, it’s clear that patching alone can’t keep up. Tools like Hypershield are necessary to combat an increasingly clever malicious cyber adversary.”

“Cisco Hypershield takes aim at the complex security challenges of modern, AI-scale data centers. Cisco’s vision of a self-managing fabric that seamlessly integrates from the network to the endpoint will help redefine what’s possible for security at scale,” said Zeus Kerravala, founder and principal analyst of ZK Research. “For instance, this level of visibility and control across a hyper-distributed environment prevents lateral movement of attackers, enabled through a unique approach to segmentation that’s autonomous and highly effective. While this may seem fantastical, the time is right given recent AI advances combined with the maturity of cloud-native technologies like eBPF.”

“At AHEAD we believe cybersecurity should be integrated into everything we do. Bolted-on security is more expensive and less effective,” said Steven Aiello, field chief information security officer at AHEAD. “Cisco Hypershield ensures that cyber protections are included into the fabric of the enterprise. Distributed Exploit Protection will be a massive win for blue teams – legacy synthetic patching was primarily limited to edge devices, allowing lateral movement once an attacker breached the perimeter. It’s a great day for cyber-defenders!”

FEU targets 50% renewable energy, more sustainable operations by 2028

Committed to its mission of promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship, Far Eastern University (FEU) aspires to implement more sustainable operations, including the use of 50% renewable energy by 2028.

As the threat of environmental degradation and climate change continues to loom not just in the country but also globally, FEU believes that universities are in a special position to help address this crisis.

In a recent seminar on “Braving New Heights for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” FEU president Juan Miguel Montinola emphasized the importance of raising awareness about existing environmental issues and how FEU, as a university, believes in the effectiveness of the United Nations’ SDGs as a framework for tackling these issues.

“It’s not just sustainability alone, but sustainability with a purpose,” said Montinola. “We are talking about the livability of our planet in the present and in the future, and reflecting on this is something that the university must instill upon the youth.”

    Sustainable operations

Montinola also shared how the university’s drive toward sustainability started more than a decade ago.

One of these initiatives is the strategic investment in a district cooling chilled water plant system, which currently supplies 11 out of 12 campus buildings. This project encourages responsible consumption and climate action in adherence to SDGs 12 and 13.

Other sustainable operations include a central filtration plant for clean water (SDG 6), the use of a Building Management System in the FEUture Building (SDG 12), and compliance with proper waste management regulations and rainwater harvesting, resulting in substantial cost savings for the university.

With these interventions, the university recorded a 6.99% reduction in power consumption in 2023 compared to the pre-pandemic face-to-face period in 2019. FEU also recorded a significant reduction in carbon emissions, which was found to be equivalent to the sequestration of 17,074 mature trees.

Moreover, FEU boasts of having the first academic building in the country to receive an Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) certification.

    Centennial year

As FEU approaches its 100th anniversary in 2028, its pursuit of sustainability remains on the agenda of its five-year aspiration plan.

Currently, FEU is powered by 25% renewable energy, with a goal to reach 50% by 2028, inclusive of the solar energy projects to add 369KW in the Marikina and Silang campuses.

Expanding its program offerings to accommodate the increasing demand for sustainability-related careers is also one of the university’s strategic targets in the next few years.

With these initiatives, FEU affirms its commitment to help build a more livable and sustainable planet for the next generation.

To strengthen its efforts in promoting the responsible disposal of electronic waste, SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, recently tapped PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), two of the leading telecommunications providers in the country for a strategic partnership that will expand SM’s Electronic Waste Collection (EWC) Program and drive further positive change in electronic waste management in the country. The partnership was launched to the public last April 22, 2024.

Joaquin L. San Agustin, SVP of SM Supermalls for marketing

In a short message, Joaquin L. San Agustin, SVP of SM Supermalls for marketing, underscored the need for the responsible disposal of electronic waste to help minimize its impact on human health and the environment. He also thanked PLDT and Smart for partnering with SM for the initiative. “Through this partnership, our goal is to promote and expand the reach of the E-Waste Collection Program, leveraging our combined expertise and resources to drive positive change in electronic waste management in the country.” He added.

Melissa V. Vergel de Dios, chief sustainability officer at PLDT and Smart

“Recognizing the importance of sustainability and responsible consumption, our brands, PLDT Home and Smart, have been actively promoting e-waste collection and recycling as part of their sales, marketing, retail operations, and customer engagement activities. We are thus grateful to have found a like-minded partner in SM, as this joint initiative significantly expands our reach and makes e-waste collection and circularity solutions even more accessible and convenient to our customers and the general public.”, said Melissa V. Vergel de Dios, chief sustainability officer at PLDT and Smart.

To reinforce the initiative’s sustainability messaging, SM, PLDT, and Smart unveiled new designs for the bins that will be used to collect the e-waste, which are made from 8,400 pieces of used beverage cartons. Shown above are the new bin designs, taken during the launch of the partnership. The e-waste bins will be available at SM Malls nationwide, particularly in Cyberzone areas.

Launched in 2021, the Electronic Waste Collection (EWC) Program encourages tenant and customer participation in the responsible disposal of electronic waste or e-waste which is considered hazardous, while also promoting decluttering in households and bringing to light conscious consumerism.

Since 2021, a total of 11,600kg of e-waste has been collected through the program, diverted from ending up in landfills and causing harm to humans and the environment to the designated facilities where they are disposed of responsibly.

This partnership between SM Supermalls, PLDT and Smart is the latest initiative under SM Supermalls’ solid waste management program, which is also in line with SM Cares’ Programs on Environment.
