BPI unveils special offers, activities for Sustainability Awareness Month in June

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is gearing up for the third edition of its much-anticipated annual Sustainability Awareness Month (SAM) this June, in alignment with the Bank’s sustainability agenda. In its steadfast commitment to responsible banking and operations, BPI has curated an engaging lineup of activities designed to encourage Filipinos to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.

With the theme “Beyond Green,” this month-long initiative provides opportunities for the members of the public to adopt sustainable practices and become ambassadors for responsible and sustainable living.

In celebration of BPI’s thrust towards sustainability, the Philippines’ first Corporate Run, #BestLifeRun Corporate Race 2024, will be held on June 9 at the Ayala Triangle Gardens. This event promotes employee health and wellness while fostering business camaraderie through fun, healthy activities. More than 120 companies and organizations are ready to participate in this year’s corporate race.

    Sustainability Awareness

Two enlightening webinars slated for June 13 will empower participants with actionable insights. “SustainableME: Power Up your Biz with Renewable Energy” shines a spotlight on BPI Ka-Negosyo Green Financing and Ka-Negosyo SOLARise solutions, catering specifically to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to enable them to leverage renewable energy solutions for sustainable business operations.

Meanwhile, “Sustainable Investing: Driving Positive Change in the Philippine Stock Market,” conducted in collaboration between BPI Securities and the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), will cover the landscape of sustainable investing, emphasizing the pivotal role investors play in supporting and steering capital towards companies committed to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

On June 18, BPI’s Sustainable Development Finance (SDF) will hold Business Talks conducted by renowned thought leaders who aspire to strengthen the business case for sustainability in manufacturing. The forum will consist of an economic briefing and discussions on industry-related regulatory updates, including insights on emerging trends in energy efficiency, resource efficiency, as well as sustainable water and pollution control.

While the whole month will see daily face-to-face and online educational events related to Sustainability,  June 24 will be dedicated to a corporate BPI cash management solution called BizLink.  The event titled “BizLink: Maximizing Business Growth and Environmental Impact” will introduce digital solutions tailored to the cash management needs of Philippine companies.  New BizLink features include the new Mobile Check Deposit Facility.

On June 26, part of the SAM festivities will be “Beyond Green: Sustainable Agricultural Technologies and Poultry Practices.” The event will introduce new innovations in the agriculture sector, specifically poultry production and waste management innovations. Vertical Farming and Soil Conditioning will also be launched as new projects under BPI’s Sustainable Agriculture program, which falls under BPI’s 16-year-old umbrella program called Sustainable Development Finance (SDF).

On June 27, SMEs will be the focus when SAM features digital cash management solutions for micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs. The event, “BizKo: Sustainable Financial Solutions through Digital Innovation,” will introduce BizKo’s Payment and Collection Facilities for small businesses.

As part of Sustainability Awareness Month celebrations, BPI is offering a range of enticing promotions to encourage sustainable consumption. From Real 0% Special Installment Plans (SIP) on energy-efficient appliances and rooftop solar panels to exclusive discounts on eco-friendly transportation options, these offerings underscore BPI’s commitment to making sustainability accessible and rewarding for all.

Eric Luchangco, BPI’s chief finance officer and chief sustainability officer, emphasized the significance of collective action in achieving sustainability goals, stating, “BPI recognizes the power of collaboration in shaping a brighter future for generations to come. Through these initiatives, we aim to inspire meaningful engagement in promoting sustainability across businesses and lifestyles.”

    Advancing Sustainability: BPI’s Enduring Commitment

For over four decades, BPI has remained steadfast in its adherence to the principles of People, Planet, and Profit. Since formally integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into its operations in 2008, the Bank has been at the forefront of sustainable banking practices introducing numerous “firsts” in Philippine banking.

Beyond conventional ESG frameworks, BPI’s sustainability blueprint incorporates an additional “E” for Economic Benefits (E₂), reflecting its commitment to driving positive economic outcomes alongside environmental and social progress. This entails facilitating financial wellness for individuals, communities, and businesses from diverse economic backgrounds, as well as channeling investments toward a greener economy and a more resilient society.

In alignment with its sustainability agenda, strategy, and objectives, BPI continues to pursue initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its banking operations. This includes exploring innovative branch designs, pursuing green-building certifications, and transitioning to renewable energy sources for its facilities.

Moreover, the Bank remains dedicated to enhancing its digital platforms to deliver seamless customer experiences. BPI’s seven digital platforms cover all segments, from large to small companies and micro-enterprises, as well as individuals, regardless of their location.

North Star reached: The Communicator concludes a three-day journalism workshop

The Communicator, the official student publication of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Communication (PUP COC), has completed one of its missions to guide COCians to the north star of journalism in its first-ever journalism workshop dubbed “Dakompass: The Communicator’s Journalism Workshop” from May 20 to May 23 at the PUP Accenture Room.

With the theme “Navigating Campus Journalism: Guiding Journalists from Classrooms to Newsrooms,” the workshop series delved deeper into the basics of journalism, which is usually taught in classrooms. Lasting for three days and featuring esteemed resource speakers and mentors, Dakompass took us on a journey to a brightly shining star.

First Day: “Sumulong, sumulat, manindigan, at magmulat.”

May 20 was a day to remember as notable speakers gave directions on how to be an ethical journalist.

John Ray Luciano, deputy secretary general of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP), highlighted the dos and don’ts of covering the marginalized and handling special topics in the morning session of the first day.

Emphasizing empathy and immersing oneself in the people’s struggles, the discussion gave us a map of how to become a journalist whose service is to the masses.

The afternoon session, moreover, delved deeper into how to pen a strong and compelling opinion piece. Explained PH’s editor-in-chief, Archie Bergosa, shared his experience and expertise and taught different routes to where discerning opinion articles reside.

Attendees also crafted their articles with the opportunity to get insights from the renowned student journalist.

Second Day: “There are stories everywhere.”

On May 21, it rained with trails and adjectives as COC’s very own explored the magic of feature writing and the power of investigative journalism.

Associate Professor Prestoline Suyat, vice chairperson of the Pinoy Media Center, described every twist and turn of featuring stories, persons, trends, and social issues.

Focusing on the issue of red-tagging and the journalists’ experience with it, attendees presented the routes they took in writing their creative narratives.

In the afternoon session, Rappler’s multimedia reporter, Jairo Bolledo, discussed the power and significance of following the trails of an issue.

Targeting local and national issues, attendees pitched new insightful ideas for stories they would love to explore and write an investigative story about.

Last Day: “What piques the audience’s interest.”

The last day, May 23, was dedicated to the creative minds behind the graphics presenting people’s stories visually.

Angat Taytay’s creative lead, Jose Miguel Dela Cruz, led the journey of coloring our paths toward piquing people’s interest through visually appealing graphics. Attendees created and presented their graphic art for The Communicator’s story releases.

This event was in collaboration with the COC Student Council, sponsored by Cozy Zola, Sangguniang Kabataan Marilag, and Casecove; and in partnership with BAJ T1NDIG, BAJ S1DLAK, BAJ 1DEOPRAXIST, BAJ 2nay Seekers, BAJ Insurgent, The Turning Point, ENCHANTRES, PUP Journalism Guild, Mulat Documentary Guild, Film Aficionados Circle, Underscore PUP Department of Communication Research, Palawanderer, Explained PH, AlterMidya, Monster RX 93.1, Gadgets Magazine, and CEGP.

The stars have aligned, the road has brightened, and Dakompass has achieved its mission of providing guidelines for The Communicator staffers.

Now that we have reached the north star of journalism, are we ready to use the knowledge we gained in climbing the much higher mountain?

Igloo highlights the importance of democratizing access to device protection with Smart partnership

As part of its ongoing efforts to provide accessible and affordable device protection insurance for all, regional insurtech Igloo, together with the Philippines’ largest mobile network Smart, has announced phone protection plans for its growing 55 million subscriber base.

This partnership not only furthers Smart’s commitment to enhancing customer experience but also highlights Igloo’s mission to provide as many avenues to device protection as possible for Filipinos, especially with the country being one of the social media capitals in the world.

“In the Philippines, 84.4% of the population own smartphones, and individuals spend nearly four hours daily on social media, well above the global average of two and a half hours. As a highly connected and social nation, the importance of these devices for communication, productivity, and entertainment is undeniable,” remarked Roberto Vea, commercial lead at Igloo Philippines. “Recognizing the essential role of these devices and the need to safeguard them, Igloo has partnered with Smart to introduce phone protection plans, providing our customers with peace of mind.”

Smart subscribers gain exclusive access to Phone Protect where they can purchase a phone protection plan with their preferred coverage and duration. It offers subscribers protection against accidental and liquid damage and includes professional repair and service at authorized centers for the Basic tier and additional protection against losses due to theft and robbery for the Plus tier.

Plans start at PHP125 for one year of coverage, making it one of the most affordable and comprehensive gadget care products available in the market.

The device protection insurance plan seamlessly integrates into the checkout process, allowing customers to review the plan details, associated premium, and terms and conditions before finalizing payment. This transparency ensures customers have a clear understanding of the additional cost and the benefits it adds to their transaction, enhancing their overall experience.

“We’re excited to expand access to device protection products with Smart, as it aligns with our goal to democratize and enhance the experience of protecting your devices. We’ve worked to make every aspect—from customer experience to pricing, coverage, purchase, and claims—easy and convenient. Partnering with Smart allows us to reach the widest possible audience.” Vea explained.

The value of partnerships in providing insurance for all

Igloo and its partners’ gadget protection and cracked screen protection products have become some of the most popular segments in the country, with over 15.8 million policies sold through various distribution platforms since January 2023.

From consumer finance to e-commerce, Igloo has been working to provide insurance to various sectors in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia. One of its most recent partnerships with Skyro and Salmon provided protection access to the underbanked segment, many of whom rely on digital lending companies for installment purchases.

Additionally, in collaboration with Growsari, an MSME enabler, Igloo piloted the Personal + Business Protection plan. This initiative aims to cover over 200,000 sari-sari stores across the country with financial assistance in case of unwanted incidents arising from natural calamities, such as floods from torrential rains.

“At Igloo, we believe that to provide insurance tailored to the needs of its market, partnerships are crucial in enabling broader audience reach while offering diverse coverage options. With our partners, we can continuously improve and innovate our offerings to serve as many people as possible,” Vea said.

    MDPPA

Usec. Ceferino Rodolfo, Undersecretary for Industry Development and Investment Promotions Group of the Department of Trade and Industry, led the induction of officers. Other VIPs who were present during the event include the CEO’s of member companies from Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and TVS; MDPPA Government Committee Chair Lizette Fajardo from Suzuki Philippines Inc.; MDPPA Marketing Committee Chair Toni Boy Acuesta from Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc.; MDPPA Road Safety Committee Chair Michael Lopez from Kawasaki Motors Philippines Corp.; MDPPA Technical Committee Chair Andrew Angeles from Honda Philippines, Inc.; and MDPPA Research and Planning Committee Chair Crisanto Malaiba.

In his presentation prior to the induction and oath-taking of the new officers, Mojica highlighted some of the biggest accomplishments of MDPPA under his leadership as the association’s president from 2021 to 2023.

Under Mojica, MDPPA was able to support industry stakeholders through a robust response and recovery program for the motorcycle industry to address the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the industry.

Within Mojica’s term, MDPPA was also able to collaborate with different government agencies, and motorcycle industry stakeholders – locally and from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, facilitating dialogue on how they can uplift the motorcycle industry in the region.

Mojica thanked the association for trusting in him over the last three years and expressed confidence that the new officers will be able to build off of these accomplishments and take the MDPPA to greater heights.

“I am very confident that with the leadership of our incoming President Mr. Cumpas, the association will be able to accomplish even more as we continue to proactively serve the needs of the motorcycle industry’s stakeholders,” said Mojica.

Newly elected president Cumpas expressed a renewed commitment to the goals of the association and said the new officers will continue to work hard towards a brighter future for the motorcycle industry.

This will be done through open and continuous collaboration with stakeholders from the motorcycle and corollary industries, aiding industry regulators in the development and implementation of policies and guidelines that are relevant to the ever-changing needs of motorcycle users, and pushing for economic policies that will promote the growth of the industry, among others.

“We shall ensure that the motorcycle industry is well-placed to benefit from even more investment in production, bolster the domestic supply chain, and ensure people with the right skills are available to support a growing industry,” said Cumpas.

On its 50th anniversary, MDPPA remains steadfast in its commitment to proactively address the needs of the industry as well as global industry gaps in road safety, regulation compliance, environmental protection, and technology innovation. As MDPPA enters this new chapter, the motorcycle industry can rest assured that the association will continue to do its part in steering the industry towards a brighter tomorrow.

It will also launch the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub Velocity Running Club with weekly running activities for its members and classes conducted by Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub (AVSH) coaches, to sustain a life of fitness and overall wellness.

The third version of the Green Run also adds two more partner beneficiaries this year. The Haribon Foundation will be joined by the Pawssion Project, a non-profit organization that rescues animals suffering from abandonment, abuse, injury or neglect, and Takbo Kabitenyo, a running team from Cavite that aims to inspire the youth and promote sports and a healthy lifestyle. Part of the registrants’ fees will go to the support of future young runners from Cavite.

“The Green Run has always been an exhilarating experience for runners – be they casual, serious or elite. The freshness of the air in Vermosa, the lush foliage and the clear pathways have been hailed as real boons by participants. On its third year, the experience will be even better as the whole Vermosa Estate continues to blossom with new features. The Athletes House in the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub is now accommodating guests, the FIFA-certified football pitch is operational and the new Ayala Mall Vermosa is now open with more food outlets. More importantly, the northern part of Vermosa is being rapidly developed. Runners will find more amenities and conveniences this year,” said Moses “MJ” Aragones, Vermosa Project Development Manager.

Aragones stated that holding The Green Run yearly is Vermosa’s commitment to the environment and to its vision-mission of promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle. “Our Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub, a state-of-the-art professionally–managed sports facility that has a FINA-standard Olympic size pool, a warm-up pool, an IAAF-standard 400m track oval, a football pitch, an athletes’ lounge and dormitory and a Sante Fitness Lab that are statements of our commitment to health, fitness and the development of Philippine sports,” Aragones added.

Why the vivo V30e is a great device for aspiring food vloggers

Starting your food vlog only really requires the boldness and courage to film yourself munching on good eats. In terms of equipment, you don’t need the fanciest dedicated camera, the most flattering lighting, nor the highest fidelity microphone. Your smartphone — a device most likely with you 24/7 — is more than enough to get you started.

However, if you feel that your current daily driver’s camera and overall performance are not up to par for launching this new hobby, then you’re in luck! vivo recently launched the vivo V30e, a capable midranger able to pack everything an aspiring food vlogger needs in a sleek and decently priced package.

Here are five reasons why the vivo V30e is a great device for those looking to create their own food vlog.

    Vlogger-centric cameras

    vivo V30e
The vivo V30e sports a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide camera.

Your food vlog’s drool-worthy dishes should be captured in drool-worthy images and videos. Thanks to the vivo V30e’s stellar rear and front shooters, this won’t be a problem. On the back, it features a functional combination of dual lenses — the main is a 50MP Sony Ultra-Sensing Camera with a wide aperture of f/1.79 and a standard field of view (FoV) of 79°; the secondary is an 8MP ultra-wide 120° FoV camera with a still-open f/2.2 aperture. At the front, you have a 32MP HD selfie Camera with a likewise wide f/2.0 aperture and 84° FoV.

What these numbers translate to is great output. Colors and details come out crisp and clear even under non-ideal lighting conditions. During these moments, the vivo V30e’s rear Aura Light 3.0 system comes in handy. Instead of the harsh throw of a traditional white LED flash, the Aura Light 3.0 provides soft, consistent fill light in a hue ranging from orange to cream to white. A screen-based Aura Light system is also present to support the front camera. Aesthetic cafés and romantic restaurants usually have dimmer-than-usual lighting, making the Aura Light a welcome addition to the vivo v30e’s shooting arsenal.

For videos, rear movies top out at a maximum resolution of 4K at 30 frames per second (FPS), with 60fps available in 1080p and 720p resolutions. Meanwhile, front videos are available at 1080p and 720p, both at 30fps. You are sure to have gorgeous showcase shots, be able to crop in and reframe when editing, and your reaction shots will look spot on!

    It’s got the editing chops

    vivo V30e
The vivo V30e is easily able to handle 4K video editing.

4K food clips are nothing if the phone doesn’t have enough horsepower to actually edit them into a click-worthy video. This the vivo V30e has in spades. It is powered by a 4nm octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, which strikes a perfect balance between power and efficiency. It specifically has 4 Cortex-A55 cores clocked at a maximum of 1.8GHz, another 4 Cortex-A78 cores clocked at a high of 2.2GHz, and an Adreno 710 graphics processor. This chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM to further ensure multitasking and editing fluidity.

Speaking of fluidity, the vivo V30e’s massive 6.78-inch 2400×1080 resolution screen with dual 3D curved edges not only facilitates finer control of editing tools, but the 120Hz maximum refresh rate also makes the process feel more accurate and smoother. The cherry on top is its 100% DCI-P3 color space coverage, which means better color reproduction and fidelity when color-correcting clips. This is especially important when food vlogging — no one wants to watch someone eating something unappetizing to look at.

Battery and storage that allow you to shoot all day

If you’re hitting up a couple of trending food places in one day, then the vivo V30e’s 5500mAh battery will definitely see you through, with juice left to spare to make it home. In fact, recording a 30-minute long 4K video at 50% screen brightness only drops the battery 9%! This amazing battery life means you can confidently shoot away to your heart’s content. As a nice bonus, the vivo V30e comes packaged with a 44W fast charger, which can charge the device from nil to 100% in around an hour. That is less time tethered to the wall and more time filming and editing content!

Along with the battery, the vivo V30e also comes with 256GB of internal storage where you can store all your videos that are still up for editing. If that is still not enough space for you, it also comes with a combo card slot that can fit either two nano-SIMs or one nano-SIM and a microSD card for even more storage flexibility.

Looks classy yet is deceivingly tough

    vivo V30e
The vivo V30e is both beautiful and brawny with its IP64-rated build.

The vivo V30e is a phone you won’t be ashamed to whip out in public. It comes in either Coco Brown or Cloud White colorways which, along with the circular camera island framed in a ridged silver bezel, are oh-so elegant to look at. But more than beauty, the vivo V30e is also a robust phone. It is rated IP64 for dust and water resistance for your peace of mind. You can be sure that accidental drink splashes and sauce droppings won’t be a problem!

    It won’t break the bank

The vivo V30e is able to wrap all the above features (and more!) in a package that is tagged at a competitive PHP17,999. Check out a sample vlog here shot and edited entirely with the vivo V30e to see how it can empower aspiring foodies to begin their vlogging journey!

Get the new vivo V30e at your nearest vivo concept store or kiosk, as well as through vivo’s official Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok platforms.
