Awesome Steampunk machine uncorks and pours wine for you with style

    0

There’s just something awe-inspiring in complicated, mechanical gadgets. The winding gears and whirring cranks of old-timey devices strike a nostalgic chord in our hearts. That’s why we were smitten when we saw the Robb Higg’s needlessly complicated yet awesome Steampunk wine-uncorking-and-pouring machine. Seriously, this 1000 pound amalgamation of metal, springs and awesome takes way to long to uncork and pour wine but heck, it does it in absolute style. Short version is we want the damn thing, even if it takes almost a minute to pour us wine.

    Microsoft demos 1ms touchscreen

As good as current touchscreen technology is, there’s still quite a bit of lag between your actual finger swipes and the time that it takes for the screen to show what you’ve written. Latency is the enemy here – the lower the latency, the more responsive the screen becomes. Microsoft wants that particular issue to be a thing of the past, and has demoed an ultra-high performance touchscreen with an extremely low latency of 1ms, which compared to typical 100ms touchscreens, is a huge leap forward. Unfortunately it’s not known if Microsoft made the touchscreen as a mere proof of concept device or their actually pushing to get this kind of tech into our tablets and smartphones soon. Until then you can view the astounding performance of the tech in the video linked below.

A single malicious link can take control of your smartphone

Here’s a tale that’s sure to make you watch what you web links you click on your smartphone: researchers from security firm CrowdStrike has found a way to wrest control of your smartphone away from you via a single bad weblink. Demonstrated at last month’s RSA security conference, George Kurtz demonstrated before a packed audience how he and his colleagues took control of an Android smartphone via one bad link masquerading as a firmware update from a his carrier. Once he clicked on the link, a small program downloaded into his device and rebooted it, and from then on, he and his colleagues had complete control of the device, without the owner being aware.

The’re able to do this via bugs in the component of Android’s browser that’s present in both the 2.2 and 2.3 version of the mobile OS. If BlackBerry and iOS owners think they’re in clear, think again – WebKit, the the browser component that was exploited, is also at the core of the Web browsers found in Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices, BlackBerry phones, and Google’s TV devices.

Kurtz said that to prevent attacks like these, mobile providers and OS developers need to make more frequent updates to patch possible security holes. The prevention of a massive data breach like this also falls on the heads of users, which should not click on every link that lands in the mobile device – lest it be the opening that people who want to spy on you are waiting for.

Faith in humanity restored: Judge rules against Apple’s lawsuit versus Kodak

Beleaguered (and quite bankrupt) company Kodak has finally gotten a break – a US judge has ruled against Apple’s bid to sue the imaging company. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper said that it was an “inappropriate way forward” to allow Apple to continue pursuing claims against Kodak while the company is in bankruptcy. The suit leveraged against Kodak is centered around the ability to preview digital photographs in LCD screens. The judge also denied Apple’s request to file a new patent infringement lawsuit against Kodak over printer and digital camera patents. Maybe now the company can finally find a way complete their restructuring and finally become awesome again.

Intel and PLDT team-up to unleash Intel Ultrabook and WiFi Zone

Intel has partnered up with PLDT to deliver a brand new campaign to consumers. The new campaign by both companies aim to deliver Intel’s message of the ultrabook’s importance and utility while giving them maximum connectivity to the web, anytime, anywhere.

“Internet growth is driven largely by content, now more so by consumers who exchange photos, videos and tweets wherever they may be,” said Intel Philippines country manager Ricky Banaag. “In this day and age, there is a noticeable increase in the demand for internet access anytime, anywhere. People are now able to access the internet simultaneously across multiple devices, empowering them not just to download data, but to upload and share content as well. Intel’s partnership with PLDT addresses a new era of computing experience that is underway, and ensures that the consumer’s expectations for a secure, mobile and powerful device are met through the Ultrabook.”

PLDT’s WiFi Zone project is basically paid WiFi that’s scattered all around the metro (the company says it has 2500 WiFi Zones all over manila, with more going up in Cebu and Baguio. The company says that users will be able to connect and surf the web using a premium dedicated internet line exclusive for WiFi use, with up to 1mbps speed per user. The service is Php 150 per month for existing myDSL subscribers, while PLDT landline subscribers can avail of the service for around Php 300 per month. Non-PLDT customers can still avail of the service via pre-paid cards.

The question is though, is the service worth it, especially since there’s a lot of establishments already have free WiFi zones (SM and Ayala malls come to mind) around the metro. Another point of contention here is that the service supposedly has a fair-use policy, unfortunately PLDT execs present during the event were tight lipped to what exactly that entailed, data cap or otherwise. If you’re interested to find out for yourself, you can hop onto www.pldtwifizone.com to find out more.

The route of the SME TechMobile was meant to symbolize the progress of business and entrepreneurship in the Philippines, and it is scheduled to hit other SME communities within the year such as Baguio, Palawan, Cebu, and Davao.

    Smart hints at LTE iPad

We had an inkling yesterday during the official iPad unveil that Smart would be racing to get an LTE version of the next generation iPad here since it’s currently the only telco that has a chance of rolling out their LTE service within this year. Today Smart has confirmed what many in the industry already guessed, with Chief Wireless Advisor Orlando B. Vea saying that the launch is an “important milestone not only for Apple but also for the entire industry.” He added that, “Anticipating this development, Smart has taken the lead in rolling out its superfast LTE network, the true 4G network, in various points of the country such as Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Boracay, Camarines Sur and Baguio.” Smart also said that we may see a local LTE version of the new iPad sooner than expected, which hints at a possible Q2 or Q3 launch of their commercial LTE service.

    3rd generation iPad official – 2048 x1536 resolution screen, A5X processor, quad-core graphics, 4G LTE, starts at $499

Well, seems like the rumors were true (some of it anyway) and today we’re finally seeing the official specs of the third generation iPad. As expected, the main draw here is its beautiful 9.7-inch, 2048 x1536 resolution display, that quite frankly, blows everything else out of the water. That’s 264 pixels per inch, and Apple says that the new iPad has 44 percent better color saturation than before. To put that in perspective, the new iPad has more pixels than current full-HD TVs. Powering the entire thing is the new A5X processor with quad-core graphics, and Apple says that the new processor is twice as fast as NVIDIA’s Tegra 3.

The new iPad also uses a 5-megapixel backside illuminated sensor and boasts slightly better specs than the camera on the iPhone 4S. The device also features 1080p video recording, which is on par with most hi-end smartphones currently out in the market.

The new iPad now features Siri-like functionality in the form of a dedicated microphone soft button at the bottom of the virtual keyboard (right beside the spacebar). Also a surprising feature: 4G LTE connectivity. We guessed that the new iPad wouldn’t have it, well, we guess we were wrong. The new iPad will feature 4G LTE right out of the bat, though how that’ll work in multiple countries with different LTE spectrums, we don’t know (you can’t just bring an LTE device provisioned for a certain carrier to another place and expect it (LTE) to work). You can of course just buy a version without the LTE capability built-in (or just use 3G), but were’s the fun in that? As an added bonus, the new iPad can be used as a personal hotspot too.

Probably the best thing about the new iPad is that it’s able to squeeze out 10 hours of battery life – 9 on 4G. The device is about 9.4mm thin and weighs in at 1.4lbs.

The new iPad will cost you $499 bucks for the 16GB version, $599 for the 32GB and $699 for the 64GB version. LTE versions of the device will retail for  $629, $729 and $829, respectively.

First countries to get dibs on the new device will be US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan on March 16, with other countries getting theirs (sorry, Philippines isn’t on there) on March 23.

Apple is at the forefront of the post-PC revolution – Tim Cook

It wouldn’t be an Apple event without CEO Tim Cook giving us a lowdown on how Apple’s been performing lately, can it? The Apple head-honcho has posted some staggering stats for the company’s sales performance from last year, with Tim saying that “Apple has it’s feet firmly on the the post PC future.” Their revenues show it – Tim says 76% of Apple’s revenue has come from post PC devices (that includes iPads, iPhones and iPods), and has sold a staggering 315 million iOS devices last year, with 62 million of those sold in Q4 of 2011. 15.4 million iPads has been sold the last quarter. Impressive Mr. Cook. Most impressive. What will this mean for the company’s notebook line? At this point, it’s still up in the air, but one thing’s for sure – Apple’s hedging their bets on iOS and the mobile space.
