    Smart, Hatchiko empower load resellers

PLDT Inc. (PLDT) wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has teamed up with digital and retail distribution company Hatchiko Corp. (Hatchiko) to empower Smart load resellers with a digital platform.

“Our partnership with Hatchiko through our key account Muenchen Corporation ensures that our Smart load products and services are accessible to the millions of Filipinos that they serve, and at the same time, augment the income of resellers by adding value-packed and relevant products to their portfolio,” said Gia Palafox, head of Sales and Development at Smart.

Through the Hatchiko digital platform, Smart load resellers can manage transactions anytime, and monitor their load wallet balance, rebates earned, and Hatchifund balance. They will also have access to simplified reloading and payments through Maya.

“We aim to transform the current load reseller model by launching a digital loading portal that simplifies and streamlines the loading process for both resellers and consumers, empowering them with tools that can enable a more efficient, transparent, and scalable solution to support resellers in managing their transactions and growing their businesses,” said Bill Vergel Mendoza, president at Hatchiko.

“Smart has been a valued partner of Muenchen and Hatchiko, and they have supported us in all our endeavors, especially in improving the livelihood of our members,” said Roselle Calica, president at Muenchen Corp. Hatchiko is the digital arm of Muenchen and offers a range of services for its users, including solutions to integrate platforms, manage bulk transactions, or process e-load.

Smart e-load has been one of the fastest-selling products for resellers and retailers across the country since it was introduced in 2003. A world-first innovation in mobile communication, Smart e-load marked the birth of prepaid services, democratizing access to mobile communication for Filipinos and enabling easier communication across the nation and overseas.

Partnerships with companies like Hatchiko and Muenchen are a key part of PLDT and Smart’s commitment to narrowing the digital divide and enabling access to communications for more Filipinos across the country, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), particularly on SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

From fandoms to run clubs, it’s better together with Communities on Rakuten Viber

Leading messaging app Rakuten Viber takes these passions and connections to the next level online with Communities, now enhanced with the Comments feature. From dissecting fan theories about your ult’s new music to running a new 5KM track, some things are better shared with your crowd. Whether you’re a Bloom or a Carat or an avid runner, birds of a feather truly are better together.

Every Community comes with admin controls, including options to enable member posting for a lively exchange of ideas. With the new Comments feature, they can now moderate and streamline multiple topics and conversations, keeping replies organized within every post. Superadmins and admins can easily enable this feature in their Community info tab, making it available by default for all messages or selectively disabling it for specific messages.

    Communities

A longtime Rakuten Viber offering, Communities goes beyond the regular group chat experience as it allows effortless collaboration and inclusive interactions with unique features that make chat history and previously shared media easily accessible. Even when the conversation has moved on to other topics, the chat history can be accessed by everyone including new members simply by scrolling back up to catch up on all discussions. With full access to all media and files, this ensures nobody misses out on crucial updates or valuable content.

User privacy and safety remain at the core of Communities. From pandemic blues to startup success: How Penbrothers is redefining remote work in the PH

Penbrothers co-founder and president Guilherme Faria (“Gui”) has come a long way — from starting the business in 2014 to leading a company recognized as the Philippines’ fastest-growing in 2024 by the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Statista.

Speaking at the seventh edition of GOAB on November 14, 2024, Faria delivered a message that resonated far beyond the scenic shores at Jpark Island Resort in Mactan, Cebu. He shared insights drawn from a decade-long journey of transforming the way businesses connect with global talent.

Founded in 2014 by Faria and Nicolas Bivero, Penbrothers began as a small agency providing coworking spaces and staffing solutions for startups like Gui’s other business, Luxclusif (that actually secured seed funding during the 2016 Geeks On A Beach (GOAB) in Bohol and successfully exited to Farfetch in 2021). Today, it is one of the Philippines’ leading ethical offshoring and remote talent management companies, employing over 1,000 Filipino professionals across diverse industries.

“Our mission from the very beginning has been to create opportunities locally. Instead of Filipino talents having to go overseas, we wanted to bring the work to them, harnessing the power of the internet to bridge gaps and build careers where opportunities didn’t previously exist,” said Faria.

The pandemic accelerated a paradigm shift

Before the pandemic, Penbrothers operated seven coworking spaces in Manila, accommodating well over 900 professionals. These physical spaces were integral to its early model, which combined staffing solutions with workspaces.

However, the onset of COVID-19 forced a paradigm shift. “With lockdowns, we realized that remote work wasn’t just a temporary fix—it was the future of work,” Faria said. This major pivot not only enhanced employee satisfaction but also demonstrated to clients that remote work could deliver equal or superior results.

“This transition allowed us and our clients to tap into talent from across the Philippines, from Luzon to Mindanao, rather than being confined to Metro Manila. Meanwhile, employees gained access to skill-building opportunities and higher wages,” Faria explained.

Faria highlighted how the company’s evolution aligns with global trends emphasizing flexibility in the workplace. “Adaptability is the new competitive advantage,” he said. “By leveraging technology and enabling seamless global collaboration, we’ve helped companies expand their talent pools while enabling Filipino professionals to thrive in remote and hybrid setups.”

    Ethical offshoring at its core

Penbrothers sets itself apart by emphasizing ethical offshoring practices. Unlike traditional outsourcing models focused solely on cost reduction, the company prioritizes long-term career development and cultural alignment.

“Ethical offshoring is about partnership. We provide competitive wages, growth opportunities, and a supportive work environment for Filipino professionals. Everyone benefits—employees are more engaged, and clients get motivated, high-performing teams,” said Faria.

This approach has positioned Penbrothers as a trusted partner for startups and firms worldwide, particularly in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. Its services span marketing, engineering, supply chain management, finance, and more, far beyond the traditional outsourcing roles in customer service and IT.

Penbrothers’ model also ensures that Filipino professionals feel valued and supported while working directly with international startups, scaleups, and mid- to large-sized businesses across multiple industries: finance, e-commerce, architecture, IT, engineering, and so on.

The future of work is global

Faria emphasized the company’s focus on quality over cost-cutting: “The real opportunity lies in the mid-market, where businesses need skilled professionals aligned with their needs—not just the cheapest option.”

As Penbrothers continues to grow, Faria remains committed to its founding mission. “We’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible. Our focus remains on the Philippines because of its immense untapped potential. The future of work is global, but it’s also deeply personal. It’s about creating meaningful careers, not just filling roles,” said Faria.

Faria’s story, shared at GOAB 2024, not only highlights Penbrothers’ success but also underscores the transformative power of remote work—an innovation bridging opportunities from the Philippines to the rest of the world.

The greatest gift: Nurturing Filipino families’ health and happiness this holiday season

With the holiday season approaching, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the greatest gift we can give our loved ones: the gift of health. In the Philippines, where family is deeply valued and health challenges persist, prioritizing family health and happiness is more important than ever. This year, let’s embrace wellness as a family affair, ensuring we can enjoy many more holidays together.

Gift of Health: A Thoughtful Approach to Gifting

While undernutrition remains a significant issue in the Philippines, as reported by the World Bank Group, the outlook is brighter. Projections from the World Health Organization suggest that between 2018 and 2025, the number of Filipinos enjoying improved health and well-being could increase by as many as 13.7 million. As the year draws to a close, this holiday season presents an ideal opportunity to extend care to all family members, not just to be part of that 13.7 million but to also inspire more Filipinos to pursue healthier lives.

Amidst the holiday rush, gift-giving can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. By prioritizing wellness, we enhance our family’s quality of life, boosting energy, reducing illness, and promoting emotional well-being. This opens up opportunities for more shared activities, from family outings to nutritious meals, movie marathons, or even exploring new hobbies together, ensuring our time together is vibrant and filled with vitality.

Embrace the spirit of the season by choosing gifts that promote health and happiness. From boosting immunity to promoting healthy skin, a diverse range of wellness supplements can cater to each family member’s needs.

    health and happiness

Whether it’s improving immunity, managing skin health, or supporting children’s growth, LAC Philippines provides essential nutrients to help families flourish.

November also marks National Children’s Month, a time to celebrate and nurture our little ones. In honor of this occasion, consider gifts that promote good nutrition and wellness practices. For growing kids, consider LAC Calcium FitJunior with Vitamin D, a highly absorbable calcium jelly that supports bone health. It contains Calcium Lactate and Red Algae with natural Vitamin K to help build strong bones, Vitamin D for better calcium absorption and muscle function, and Casein Phosphopeptides for healthy teeth. To further enhance their nutrition, include LAC Vitamin C Junior Gummy, delicious orange-flavored gummies packed with 125mg of Vitamin C. This not only helps boost the immune system, but also accelerates recovery, promotes healthy skin and gums, and improves the absorption of iron and calcium, making it perfect for strong bone and teeth development.

For adults, LAC Taut® White is an excellent choice, enhancing skin clarity through its concentrated formula of antioxidants and revitalizing ingredients. Complementing this is the LAC Taut® Rejuvenate+ Premium Collagen. This unique 13,000mg collagen formula is specifically designed to protect your skin from Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), which contribute to premature aging. Not only is it one of the most potent collagen drinks on the market, but it also combines powerful ingredients like thoroughbred placenta, AG complex, vitamin blend, hyaluronic acid, and ceramide to firm, hydrate, and rejuvenate your skin, helping you achieve a youthful, radiant appearance.

Remember, you’re not just giving a gift; you’re investing in the well-being of your family, ensuring they can fully enjoy life’s precious moments. When you invest in their health, you invest in more time to create lasting memories, not just during holidays but throughout life’s journey.

AI Readiness flatlines in PH despite rapid market evolution and anticipated impact

Cisco, the worldwide leader in networking and security, recently announced findings from the Cisco 2024 AI Readiness Index. The index reveals that only 22% of organizations in Philippines are fully prepared to deploy and leverage AI-powered technologies, from 17% a year ago. This underscores the challenges companies face in adopting, deploying, and fully leveraging AI. Given the rapid market evolution and the significant impact AI is anticipated to have on business operations, this readiness gap is especially critical.

The AI Readiness Index is based on a double-blind survey of 3,660 senior business leaders from organizations with 500 or more employees across 14 markets in APJC. These leaders are responsible for AI integration and deployment within their organizations. The AI readiness index is measured across six pillars: strategy, infrastructure, data, governance, talent, and culture.

    Acting with Urgency

AI has become a cornerstone for business strategy, and there is increasing urgency among companies to adopt and deploy AI technologies. In the Philippines, 98% report an increased urgency to deploy AI in the past year, driven primarily by the CEO and leadership team. Additionally, companies are committing a significant amount of resources towards AI, with 65% reporting that as much as 10% to 30% of their IT budget is being allocated to AI deployments.

Despite significant AI investments in strategic areas like cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, and data analytics and management, many companies report that returns on these investments are not meeting their expectations.

“As companies accelerate their AI journeys, it’s critical they adopt a comprehensive approach to implementation and connect the dots to link AI ambition with readiness,” said Zaza Soriano-Nicart, managing director, Cisco Philippines. “This year’s AI Readiness Index reveals that to fully leverage the potential of AI, companies need a modern digital infrastructure capable of meeting evolving power needs and network latency requirements from growing AI workloads. This must be supported with the right visibility to achieve their business objectives.”

    Key Findings

    • AI Readiness flatlined, with Infrastructure identified as a pain point:  Companies are tackling with gaps in compute, data center network performance, and cybersecurity, amongst other areas. Only 22% of organizations have the necessary GPUs they need to meet current and future AI demands and 45% have the capabilities to protect data in AI models with end–to–end encryption, security audits, continuous monitoring, and instant threat response.
    • Companies are investing, but gains fall short of expectations: Over the past year, AI has been a priority spend for organizations in Philippines, with 65% allocating 10-30% of their IT budgets to AI projects. AI investments have focused on three strategic areas: data analysis (58% of companies are at full/advanced deployment), cybersecurity (57%), and data management (49%). The top three outcomes they aim to achieve include improving efficiency of systems, processes, operations, and profitability; the ability to innovate and remain competitive; and growing revenue and market share for the business.
    • Despite increased investments, on average, about one-third of companies said they have either seen no gains or the gains have fallen short of their expectations, in augmenting, assisting, or automating current processes or operations.
    • Relentless pressure to succeed: There is mounting pressure and urgency from top leadership to implement AI technologies. Over half (53%) of companies report that the CEO and the leadership team are driving AI deployment, closely followed by board of directors (43%), and middle management (37%). As the clock ticks, businesses in Philippines are accelerating efforts and increasing investments to overcome barriers and embrace AI-driven transformation. Notably, about half (48%) of organizations plan to allocate more than 40% of their IT budget to AI investments in the next four to five years, a steep climb from 10% of companies who said they are allocating a similar portion of their IT budget to AI currently.

Companies recognize they need to do more to be better prepared to leverage AI effectively. Across Philippines, 51% rated improving scalability, flexibility, and manageability of their IT infrastructure as their top priorities, highlighting an awareness of the gaps that must be addressed to improve overall AI readiness.

    Addressing Skills and Talent Gaps

Despite unique challenges within each pillar, a common theme has emerged across the board—the lack of skilled talent. Companies highlighted this as the top challenge across infrastructure, data, and governance, underscoring the critical need for skilled professionals to drive AI initiatives.

Anupam Trehan, VP, People and Communities APJC, at Cisco, said: “As the race to adopt AI picks up pace, talent will be a key differentiator for companies. There is already a shortage of skilled talent across various aspects of AI. This means companies will need to invest in their existing talent pool to meet the growing demand. At the same time, it is crucial that all stakeholders – the private and public sectors, educational institutions, and governments – work together to develop local talent so that the entire ecosystem can benefit from the immense potential that AI offers.”

Emirates has launched its first Emirates World retail store concept in Southeast Asia, by introducing a fully immersive Emirates experience in Manila. The new space marks a significant step in the airline’s commitment to the Philippines by redefining the travel retail experience for travelers.

Located at Shangri-La The Fort, Manila in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, the newly unveiled 221 square metre retail destination was inaugurated by Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy president and chief commercial officer in the presence of the Philippines First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos; His Excellency Mohamed Obaid Alqataam Alzaabi, UAE Ambassador to the Philippines; along with other distinguished guests, trade and media partners.

To celebrate the opening of the Emirates World Retail Store in Manila, Philippines First Lady Mrs Liza Araneta Marcos and Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy president and chief commercial officer led the cake-cutting ceremony.

Adnan Kazim commented: “The new Emirates World Store in Manila is designed to serve as a one-stop shop where customers can explore Emirates’ best-in-class products and services and provide visitors a glimpse of our onboard hospitality and excellence, ensuring the bar is set high when it comes to retail experiences both in the Philippines and across our global network. A standout feature of the new retail store is Emirates A380 onboard Lounge display, giving customers a first-hand look at the premium touches that define Emirates’ products in the sky, and bringing them closer to the airline’s high standards of in-flight luxury. Store visitors can also browse a curated selection of Emirates-branded merchandise and travel accessories, with a wide range of products from the Emirates Official Store – including the latest NBA collection for basketball fans.

The Emirates World Store is also equipped with smart technologies that set it apart from conventional travel retail spaces, featuring an interactive self-service screen that allows customers to quickly browse flight options, check availability, and take selfies against the background of popular destinations operated by Emirates.

The launch of the Emirates World Store in Manila underscores the airline’s commitment to the Philippine market and providing Filipinos with the quality of service that only the world’s largest international airline can deliver. Emirates has so far launched its reimagined retail spaces in Hong Kong, London, and Nairobi, with more stores set to progressively roll out to key markets with an estimated investment of AED 100 million over the next three years as part of the airline’s retail strategy.
