Cashback vs. Points: Which kind of credit card reward is better for you?

    0

Credit card rewards have gained considerable popularity among consumers in the Philippines, especially because of how they enhance the cardholder’s spending power. Generally speaking, credit card rewards are incentives earned for every peso spent using a credit card. They can come in the form of cashback or points that can be redeemed for different benefits, including statement credits, travel, merchandise, or gift cards and vouchers.

With various options available today, the credit card rewards a cardholder is entitled to can cater to a variety of financial and lifestyle-related goals. For example, everyday shoppers might prefer cashback rewards, while frequent travelers might enjoy earning travel points from the best credit card for travel Philippines issuer. Anyone applying for their first or next credit card, particularly because of its reward system, should think about the type of reward that will be most useful to them.

If you’re currently wondering whether cashback or points are best for you, here’s a guide that will help you understand the two most popular types of credit card rewards and how to choose a card with perks that you’ll truly enjoy.

    What are Cashback Credit Cards?

First, let’s define what cashback credit cards are. They offer a straightforward reward, which is a percentage of your spending returned to you as cash. This cash can then be applied as a statement credit, thus helping you lower your outstanding balance with the use of the cashback amount.

The Advantages of Cashback Credit Cards

There are many reasons cashback credit card rewards appeal specifically to a large subset of cardholders. At the top of this list is the simplicity of how cashback rewards work. Essentially, for every purchase you make, you’ll be able to receive a set percentage or rebate amount back. For example, if your cashback rate is 2% and you spend PHP5,000, you’ll get PHP100 back.

One great example of a card with a generous and innovative cashback system is Maya’s Landers Cashback Everywhere Credit Card, a two-in-one credit and membership card collaboration with Landers Superstore. Not only does this card make shopping at Landers more rewarding with up to 5% cashback per transaction; it rewards you everywhere, with a 2% cashback whenever you spend for dining and a 1% cashback for every other eligible type of transaction.

    Cashback

Cashback rewards are also very easy to understand and track on the Landers Cashback Everywhere Credit Card. PHP1 equates to 1 point, and users will receive PHP500 vouchers every time they reach 500 points. If you prefer a simple, no-fuss reward system, this one will take much of the guesswork out of what reward you can expect every time you accumulate points. Plus, if your rewards points accumulate quickly and you’d like them to be usable immediately, a cashback card like the Landers Cashback Everywhere Credit Card by Maya is the way to go.

The Disadvantages of Cashback Credit Cards

While there are some noteworthy benefits to a cashback credit card reward program, this system is not without its downsides. Some cashback programs have restrictions on how and when you can redeem your rewards, potentially limiting their usefulness. For example, some cards may only allow you to redeem cashback in increments of PHP 500 or more.

There’s also a limitation to the rewards. Other than the cashback amount, you can’t exchange the reward for other perks, such as travel miles or waived annual fees. You also won’t be able to exchange the cashback for actual cash that you can spend elsewhere. If this type of credit card rewards program doesn’t suit your needs or your preferences for using your rewards, consider other options.

What are Credit Card Reward Points?

Credit card reward points, on the other hand, are points you accumulate for every peso spent. These points can be redeemed for various rewards, including travel, retail merchandise, or gift vouchers for dining or shopping. If your credit card program permits, you can also use the points as annual fee waivers to help you save on credit card fees, cash credits, or donations to different charities.

The Advantages of Points Credit Cards

When you use credit cards that offer reward points, you have a better chance of getting a higher value per peso spent. That’s because some credit cards allow you to earn up to four times the rewards points for each purchase. Take note that this may depend on the spending category, like the credit card’s partner supermarkets, certain shopping malls, or partner restaurants.

All the same, earning more reward points per purchase allows you to earn points faster than usual. If you typically use your credit card to purchase goods and services in certain establishments, credit card reward points are worth considering for these alone.

In addition to getting the opportunity to earn more rewards, you can also redeem your points for a variety of useful things. This provides you with flexibility in how you use your points. You can choose to use them on travel bookings, merchandise, statement credits, and much more.

Moreover, many banks offer non-expiring reward points. This means you can keep accumulating points until you want to exchange them for a specific perk you’ve been eyeing. If you prefer to spend your reward points on large-ticket items like gadgets or airline miles for travel, credit cards that offer points for certain amounts are worth exploring.

The Disadvantages of Points Credit Cards

Reward points systems have their disadvantages, too. For one, the issuer may have a complex system for earning and redeeming points. The value of the points themselves can vary, and different rewards can have different point values.

As a consequence, it may be both more difficult and more time-consuming for a cardholder to figure out the best deals. Plus, the process of redeeming points can also take longer than earning a cashback. After you’ve found the perfect reward to exchange your points for, for example, you may need to send a request to the bank and wait for days or even weeks for your reward to be processed and released.

Sometimes, reward points are also harder to use than cashback rewards. A reward point is not always equivalent to one peso; the reward rate really depends on the bank’s offer. It may actually take you several purchases before you can accumulate the number of points you need to redeem a sizable reward.

Ultimately, both types of rewards come with their own unique benefits, and the best choice for you will depend on how you plan to use your card and what kind of rewards will be most beneficial to your lifestyle. Whether you choose a cashback credit card for its simplicity and immediate benefits or a credit card with a point system for its potential higher value and variety of redemption options, the key is to always match your choice with your needs.

Talent in harmony with Artificial Intelligence (AI): How TELUS Digital PH is redefining customer service

TELUS International Philippines has officially rebranded to TELUS Digital Philippines reflecting the company’s commitment to delivering digital-first, human-centered customer experience solutions across the globe. As the customer experience landscape continues to evolve with the rise of generative AI (GenAI), TELUS Digital Philippines is demonstrating how AI can empower—rather than replace—human talent, leading to richer, more meaningful interactions and setting new standards for service excellence.

“While AI is transforming customer service in so many ways, it can’t replicate the uniquely human skills that are so crucial to creating connections,” says Rajiv M.Dhand, TELUS Digital APAC and Africa Regional vice-president. “Empathy, critical thinking, and the ability to navigate complex emotions are the qualities that set our team members apart and allow us to build lasting relationships with customers.”

    TELUS Digital

Unlocking human potential for next-level customer experiences

Generative AI and human expertise form a powerful synergy, working in tandem to redefine the customer journey. At TELUS Digital Philippines, AI-powered assistants are already in use to rapidly retrieve extensive knowledge bases and past customer transactions, to provide agents with real-time answers and valuable insights, empowering them to confidently provide personalized support and even anticipate needs and potential challenges.

“With the amount of information that we need to understand constantly growing, including product details and updates, these AI tools have become essential copilots to us,” says Jastine Carl Ranillo, TELUS Digital Philippines team member. “They put everything I need right at my fingertips. In addition to having access to the relevant information I need to support the customer, I also get AI prompts about next best steps or product recommendations. All these make me feel more confident and allow me to focus on what matters most—helping the customer.”

This access to the most updated and relevant information translates to a faster, more personalized, and empathetic support experience for the customer, ultimately building stronger, more impactful connections. Not only do these AI copilots improve the customer experience, but they also have a similar positive impact on agents and the results speak for themselves. For instance, by implementing an AI-powered agent-assist chatbot for a growing consumer robotics company, the TELUS Digital Philippines team supporting that company witnessed a 37% increase in agent satisfaction, improved agent retention, and a significant reduction in new hire training time, on top of the improvements experienced by their customers.

“Since implementing AI-powered tools, we’ve seen a very positive impact not just for our customers but for our team members as well. For instance, our agent satisfaction scores increased, and the new hire training period became shorter. And in terms of performance, average handling time and first contact resolution has also increased. While for the brands that we support, they in turn benefit from increased customer loyalty, market share, and other positive results from satisfied customers. It’s a win-win for our team members and our customers” shares Dhand.

Equipping all team members for an AI-powered future

Providing team members with powerful AI tools is only half the equation. To truly unlock the full potential of this technology, TELUS Digital Philippines is equally invested in equipping its team with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an AI-powered world. The company has invested heavily in creating a robust curriculum of AI-focused training programs for its team members at all levels.

From “AI 101” courses that demystify the basics to specialized workshops on leveraging GenAI for specific customer experience tasks, these training programs empower the team with the knowledge and skills they need to confidently navigate the evolving landscape of AI-powered customer service. For example, agents participate in immersive simulations where they interact with AI-powered tools in real-life scenarios. This hands-on experience allows them to gain practical skills and build confidence in their ability to leverage AI effectively. The company also created several micro-learning modules, videos and podcasts to equip its team members across all roles with basic to advanced AI know-how.

“The training programs on GenAI and the AI tools available to us really helped me reimagine what’s possible now. They opened my eyes to how I can further elevate the level of service we can give to our customers, and they made being more effective at my job easier for me,” says Johanne Joi Santos, TELUS Digital Philippines team member. “It’s really about enhancing my skills and making me even better at my job.”

Leveraging GenAI to enhance performance, coaching and people development

TELUS Digital makes GenAI tools available across all departments of the company globally, including the company’s own Synapse, a new GenAI chatbot that its team members use for numerous tasks including writing, translating and summarization, as well as WorkAssist, an AI-powered assistant powered by Fuel iX, TELUS Digital’s recently launched enterprise-grade AI engine. WorkAssist uses GenAI capabilities to help with writing, learning, brainstorming, summarizing information, generating images, and so much more. Fuel iX, the company’s enterprise-grade AI engine is also available for purchase to companies that need help in developing similar customized GenAI tools for their employees.

TELUS Digital Philippines also utilizes AI to improve their leaders’ coaching skills and the development of their team members. The company incorporated AI into their coaching program to help better assess the quality of coaching discussions and effectiveness of action plans to support opportunities for enhanced performance or to address skills or other gaps identified during coaching sessions.

“We’re committed to investing in our people and equipping them with the tools, skills and guidance they need to unlock their full potential. Our comprehensive training programs combined with our range of AI-powered tools, ensure our team members are effectively incorporating new technologies into their day-to-day routines to help them advance their careers,” emphasizes Dhand.

“Now more than ever, it’s essential that we address skills gaps that can be detrimental to the development of our team members and our team’s ability to fully capitalize on GenAI and other leading-edge technologies. Having the tech is just the starting point, but to have the people use the tech effectively and responsibly is equally important and is what will unlock success in the age of AI,” he adds.

While AI is transforming the CX landscape, TELUS Digital Philippines maintains that the human touch remains essential. By strategically combining human insights and empathy with AI capabilities, companies can deliver the personalized, efficient and heartfelt service that customers crave. TELUS Digital Philippines is proving that the future of CX is not about choosing between humans and AI—it’s about leveraging the best of both to create truly exceptional customer experiences.

MPT South to serve over 340,000 motorists in 2025

MPT South forecasts more than 30% traffic growth by the end of 2025, translating to over 340,000 average daily motorists, a significant increase from the current figure of 259,815. This growth will be driven by the completion of several key segments of the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) and CAVITEX C5 Link. These segments include the CALAX Governor’s Drive Interchange, Open Canal Interchange, and Kawit Interchange, as well as the C5 Link Segment 3B, which will connect the current Sucat Interchange to the C5 Link Flyover Extension, spanning from SLEX-Taguig to E. Rodriguez in C5. The CAVITEX-CALAX Link, currently under construction, will integrate these two major toll roads, creating a more seamless connection for motorists.

These projects are slated for commercial operations before the end of 2025, bringing MPT South’s total road network to 67km. The new segments, designed to enhance travel time and accessibility, are expected to encourage more motorists to utilize the network, further boosting traffic flow in the region. This will improve connectivity and travel efficiency between major provinces in Southern Luzon, easing travel for daily commuters and businesses alike.

“Aside from providing an enhanced driving experience for our motorists, our projects also aim to contribute to the region’s economic development by improving accessibility and connectivity.  Once completed, our expressway network will provide a more seamless travel experience for over 340,000 motorists, a 30% increase from our existing daily traffic, and help spur economic growth in both regions,” said MPT South president and general manager Raul L. Ignacio.

    MPT South

In line with this, MPT South is allocating PHP14-billion in capital expenditures (CAPEX) in 2025 to support the construction and maintenance of its infrastructure.

“Despite the challenges we face in construction, such as the timely delivery of right-of-way and the recent typhoons, we are working around the clock to ensure the delivery of these vital infrastructure projects for the benefit of progress by the end of 2025,” Ignacio added.

Upon completion, MPT South’s expressway network is expected to boost regional economic growth by facilitating quicker, more efficient movement of goods and services between key industrial and commercial hubs. The shortened travel time will provide additional benefits such as reduced fuel consumption and lower vehicle emissions, contributing to nation-building and improving the quality of life for Filipinos.

HMPH selects top Hyundai Accelerate scholars for immersive training in South Korea

Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH) empowers the youth through Hyundai Accelerate, its pilot educational aid program, in partnership with Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI), the City Government of Pasig, Quezon City Government, and the Department of Education Taguig City and Pateros (DepEd TAPAT).

As part of the Hyundai Accelerate program, 40 students from DBTI, Pasig City, Quezon City, Taguig City, and Pateros were chosen for an 8-month classroom-based practical course, followed by 4-month On-the-Job Training (OJT) at designated Hyundai Service Centers in Metro Manila. This included training in basic vehicle inspection, diagnosis, and repair, equipping students with knowledge in automotive technology.

Following the classroom courses, the Top 9 performing students of the Hyundai Accelerate program were sent to the Hyundai Global Learning Center (GLC) in Cheonan, South Korea, for specialized training sponsored by Hyundai Motor Company. Joining the immersion program were Junje Aga Ganotice of Hyundai Quezon Ave; Bensar Ali Mindo, Jefer Jay Oboy, and Raheem Jebrael Lasola of Hyundai Shaw; Rovielyn Gutierrez and Mar Janlouie Hernandez of Hyundai Commonwealth; Rhaquim Nuhj Musa of Hyundai Alabang; Kenneth Samortin of Hyundai Cainta; and John Michael Niegas of Hyundai E. Rodriguez. The students were led by their school adviser Jeffrey Andrada, as well as HMPH Technical trainer Primo Franco Lanorio.

Last September 2 to 6, 2024, the top 9 students were given prestigious hands-on training in basic electric vehicle (EV) safety and understanding, as well as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technology; leveraging on their learnings from their initial OJT.

“HMPH is proud to empower future automotive technicians through Hyundai Accelerate,” says HMPH managing director Cecil Capacete. “We believe this program represents our vision, which is “Progress for Humanity,” as well as our commitment to shaping the next generation of skilled automotive professionals in the Philippines. We are confident that this program will equip our students with the skills to set them apart in the field. As we bridge the gap between the automotive industry and education, HMPH is thrilled to be a partner for Filipinos, be it on the road, or in the classroom.”

“I was really inspired, especially when we were in Hyundai GLC. It was our first time travelling to another country, and it was my first time studying cars. I realized that there were still a lot of things I don’t know about the field. But in the short period of time we spent in GLC, I learned a lot about automotive industry.”, said Louie Hernandez, who is currently rendering his OJT in Hyundai Commonwealth.

Rovielyn Gutierrez, who is also having her training under Hyundai Commonwealth, shared, “The trip was really memorable for me. I was even more inspired as this is my first time handling electric vehicles. I was very intrigued by the advanced technology and it encouraged me to further study EVs. I see myself working as an automotive mechanic and pursuing my studies in the automotive industry, especially since I have been studying this since high school.”

The inaugural batch of Hyundai Accelerate scholars are set to graduate in November 2024. HMPH intends to continue the program and select its second batch of scholars in the following school year.

Next-Gen Ford Territory Owners Club PH: Building a community and fostering camaraderie

Vehicle ownership can be quite daunting, especially for first-time car owners. This is one of the reasons why the Next-Generation Ford Territory Owners Club Philippines (NGFTOCP) was formed last year, a few months after the Next-Gen Ford Territory was introduced in the market.

From the latest features to the newest in-car technology, newbie motorists can sometimes find vehicle maintenance overwhelming. That’s why they look for car clubs and communities to learn more about their vehicles, share their experiences, and ask questions of their fellow members.

To mark the first anniversary of the Next-Gen Ford Territory Owners Club Philippines, the club organized a leisurely drive to Dasmariñas, Cavite, for its first-ever grand meet-up to finally meet the members and put faces behind the names.

Being part of an online community like the NGFTOCP where one can seek helpful advice can be incredibly beneficial, as Rodel Faderan, a first-time vehicle owner, can attest to.

“As a Territory owner, I do have a lot of questions on car maintenance. One good thing about the community is they can help provide answers and share vehicle-related information to the members,” Faderan shares.

As a car club, NGFTOCP prides itself in fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and support among its admins and members. “It’s really about helping each other and building our community,” says Rowell Punongbayan, an active member of the club.

With a great mix of personalities and diverse backgrounds, the support extended by the members come in different forms. “In NGFTOCP, members can ask for help – whether it’s about their Territory, personal matters, business-related questions, or anything else they might need assistance with,” shares Karren Leigh, one of the founding members of the club.

At the end of the day, the glue that really holds the group together is their collective passion for the Territory and their eagerness to share the features and capabilities that make it a reliable daily driver. “For me, the biggest selling point of the Territory is the space. Plus, the driving pleasure is also there. It’s really agile and fast,” says Miller Ocampo.

Miller, Karren, Rowell, and Rodel are just a few of the people brought together by their love for their Ford Territory and sense of community and advocacy. Who would’ve thought that owning a vehicle can lead to finding such a supportive and tight-knit group?
