Apple Pay is now available in the Philippines for eligible Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards, expanding the digital payment options available to local cardholders. Users can add supported cards to Apple Wallet on an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac and use them for contactless, in-app, and online purchases.
The service allows customers to pay without repeatedly presenting a physical card or typing their card, contact, shipping, and billing details. Cardholders will also continue to receive the rewards and benefits associated with their eligible Visa or Mastercard cards.
Making contactless payments in stores
To pay in-store, customers can double-click the side button on an iPhone or Apple Watch, authenticate the transaction, and hold the device near a compatible contactless terminal. Every purchase is verified through Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, together with a one-time unique dynamic security code.
Apple Pay can be used at grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops, retail outlets, and other establishments that accept contactless payments. Actual availability depends on whether the customer’s card is eligible and whether the merchant has a compatible payment terminal.
“The launch of Apple Pay enables secure, seamless, and convenient payment experiences for consumers in the Philippines,” said Jason Crasto, country manager of Mastercard in the Philippines. “As digital adoption continues to accelerate in this region, we’re excited to continue connecting people to the payment choices they want and the peace of mind they need every time they pay.”
Paying in apps and on the web
Customers can also use Apple Pay on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to complete purchases in supported apps and websites. This reduces the need to create separate accounts or repeatedly enter contact information, card numbers, and shipping and billing details during checkout.
Visa said the launch also gives Filipinos traveling overseas and international visitors coming to the Philippines another payment option. According to figures cited by Visa, 97% of travelers across Asia-Pacific said they intended to bring credit, debit, or prepaid cards on their trips, while 17% planned to carry foreign currency.
Among the travelers surveyed, 38% preferred cards because of their security and fraud-protection features, while 20% cited their broad acceptance. These figures were presented by Visa as evidence of increasing demand for payment methods that are both widely usable and protected against fraud.
“Apple Pay represents the next evolution of payments in the Philippines, combining ease of use, simplicity, and security in every transaction, helping amplify the payment experience for Visa cardholders in the Philippines,” said Jeffrey Navarro, country manager for Visa Philippines.
“With Apple Pay, Filipinos and tourists alike now have seamless and secure ways to pay across shops, restaurants, travel destinations, and public transport, supporting the nation’s vision to become a cash-lite economy,” he added.
Protecting payment information
Apple Pay does not store a customer’s actual credit or debit card number on the device or on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and stored in the Secure Element, a certified chip designed to protect payment information on the device.
Combined with biometric or passcode authentication and a dynamic security code for each purchase, this system reduces the exposure of actual card details during a transaction. The merchant receives the information needed to process the payment without receiving the customer’s original card number.
Adding a card to Apple Wallet
To set up Apple Pay, customers can open the Wallet app on an iPhone, tap the plus symbol, and follow the instructions to add an eligible Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card. Once a card has been added to a compatible device, it can be used immediately where Apple Pay is supported.
Eligible cards may also be added to an Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac. The two source announcements do not identify all participating Philippine issuers, so cardholders should verify eligibility with their bank or card provider.
