We here at Gadgets are huge fans of large screens. These devices generally let you do more than a dinky little device can, but usually at the cost of added bulk. Sony is challenging this with the Xperia Z Ultra. This phone packs a genuinely massive 6.4-inch, full-HD triluminos display that will make short work of web browsing, video viewing, and even creating the odd document or presentation while on the move.
The Z Ultra runs a powerful Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor that runs at a zippy 2.2 GHz. This, coupled with 2 GB of RAM, this means the phone gives you all the power you would expect from a high-end device. It comes with 16GB of memory, with expandable to 64GB via a microSD and is dust- and water-proof to depths up to a meter.
The LTE device ships with Android 4.2 JellyBean and has the interesting feature of being able to recognize screen interactions from any pencil. It’s a little odd, but it’s actually pretty brilliant. The Z Ultra also comes with an 8-Megapixel main camera and a 2MP front device to handle video calls.
We’re going to get some hands-on time with the device in just a little while, so stay posted. We’ll be updating this post as the event rolls along.
Update 1:
We got our hands on the device, and man, “massive” just about covers the first impressions we got. I have slightly larger than average hands, but there were times it felt a little like it would slip out, just because there was so much phone I had to hang on to. Those with small hands might need a little backup handling the Z Ultra, but, man is it worth it. Every inch of the phone’s screen is just gorgeous. If I had a little extra time, I’d likely be off in a corner loading videos onto the thing.
The Z Ultra also has LTE, so if you have a hankering for fast connectivity, plus a massive HD screen, this might be the ticket.
Update 2:
We’re getting a look at the SBH52 accessory for the Z Ultra, which is basically an NFC-pairing Bluetooth device that lets to stream music and calls, removing the hassle of having to take out the (admittedly) large Xperia Z Ultra. It’s actually pretty handy.
We’re now also getting a peek at the Xperia M, the smaller brother of the Z Ultra, which might be for those looking for a device that is a little more manageable. We’re going to do a separate post on that little guy to, so hang tight.
