Two Philippine teams emerged champion at the recent Google Online Marketing Challenge (GOMC).
The team from University of the Philippines was declared the global winner of the Adwords Awards for their marketing campaign for Sun Cruises Philippines, a ferrying and tour services provider in Corregidor Island. The team was composed of Jeanina Melissa K. Tee, Martin Joseph Alexandre R. Gonzaga, Wesley Paul S. Cortez, Francis Louie M. Karunungan, Nigel Willamson T. Lee and Erika Kathleen A. Uy, and was mentored by Professor James Ryan Jonas.
Equally victorious is the team from Asian Institute of Management (AIM), which was declared the Asia Pacific winner for their work on a quirky online lifestyle store called Happily Unmarried. The team was composed of Kaushal Pilikuli, Madhu Konanur Venkataram, Sangamesh Desai, Matthew Chua and Pratik Piyush, and was mentored by Professor David Gulliver Go.
Said Ryan Morales, Head of Marketing at Google Philippines, “This is APAC’s first championship in the competition, and we are proud that teams from Philippine schools landed it for the region.”
“The double victory is a great testament of the quality of instruction we have in our universities and also of the Filipinos’ online marketing talent,” Morales added.
With a trip to the Google headquarters in Mountain View, California at stake, each competing team was given $250 to run a three-week ad campaign for a business or non-profit organization using either Google Adwords or Google+ pages.
Over 50,000 students and professors from almost 100 countries have participated in GOMC in the past 5 years. In this year’s run, the UP and AIM teams bested 12,000 students from 80 countries.
