    51% of women-led SMEs increased revenues after accepting digital payments

    Visa, a global leader in digital payments, conducted a survey on small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the Philippines. Findings show that 51% of women-led SMEs and 56% of micro-businesses experienced revenue growth with digital payments adoption. Given women constitute over half of Asia’s population and SMEs’ vital role in the economy, maximizing women’s economic potential could add $89 billion annually to the Asia Pacific economy including in the Philippines. 

    SMEs are crucial for  economic growth in the Philippines, with more than a million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country. The Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry data show that 99.5% of businesses in the country are MSMEs with almost 50% of them in wholesale and retail trade, generating 65% of total employment. Furthermore, the Asian Development Bank estimated that MSMEs contribute around 36% of the country’s GDP[1].

    The Visa study found that managing businesses has become easier for 72% of the surveyed SMEs in the Philippines. Wallets, predominantly GCash, dominate as the main provider of digital payment for SMEs, especially those that are female-led (61%) who were surveyed in the Philippines. Visa has partnered with GCash to introduce the new GCash Card — giving millions of unbanked Filipinos access to the benefits of owning a payment card. 

    Among the businesses that have started accepting digital payments, those accepting cards witnessed the most significant turnover increases (83%). Digital payments provide instant transfers and enable cashless transactions for an enhanced commerce experience. Visa supports SMEs in the Philippines by offering widespread acceptance and robust protection for both merchants and customers, guarding against fraudulent activities.

In 2023, Visa launched the SME Accelerator Program in the Philippines to support SMEs and partners through competitive pricing, faster onboarding, and comprehensive take-to-market support. The expanded SME Accelerator initiatives will also focus on a wider set of partnerships with ecosystem participants to serve smaller sellers and fast-track solutions deployment for SMEs. 

    The Visa Foundation has also pledged USD100 million over five years to accelerate access for underrepresented and women-led SMEs in APEC economies, including in the Philippines. Of the nearly 67 million SMEs reached by Visa globally, approximately 29.6 million are from APEC economies, with 10.9 million being women-led SMEs. 

    CAVITEX connector roads’ on-time completion gets fresh momentum from Presidential support

    The on-time completion of the two connector roads of the Cavitex Expressway (CAVITEX) has recently acquired fresh momentum, inspired by the expression of support by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., when he led the groundbreaking and inauguration of the three CAVITEX links or connector roads  in different locations in one day.

    “The Presidential declaration of support for these major infrastructure projects has energized us all in completing the projects on time, leaving no stone unturned to finish the job,” thus declared Raul L. Ignacio, president of the CAVITEX Infrastructure Corporation,” a subsidiary of the larger Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) of the MVP Group.

    Final step to enhance transport infra. 

    In his speech, President Marcos called the actions taken only last week as “the final step in completing the CAVITEX C5 Link Expressway, enhancing our transportation infrastructure network on behalf of countless motorists and passengers.” And “the [CAVITEX]-CALAX Link, originating from Kawit, Cavite, is a 1.2-kilometer connection whose length may be short, but its impact will be substantial. By establishing a direct connection to CALAX, we also ease the traffic congestion at the busy intersection of Tirona Highway and Centennial Road.” With this, we anticipate a significant improvement in the road network connectivity from Kawit to the greater CALABARZON region.

    President Marcos and his transport-related Cabinet members were joined by Manuel V. Pangilinan, MPTC chairman; Rogelio Singson, president and CEO of Metro Pacific Tollways; and Raul L. Ignacio, president and general manager of Cavitex Infrastructure Corporation. 

    Two contractors: Beat the deadline  

    DMCI, under a PHP3.3 billion contract, has committed to meet the construction deadline to finish Segment 3B, the final portion of the CAVITEX C5 Link, a six-lane 2.0 km expressway connecting CAVITEX at Paranaque in the West and C5 Road Taguig in the East. This segment will enable motorists to travel from Cavite to Taguig City, bypassing a number of service roads. 

    EEI will be completing the 1.3km dual 2-lane CAVITEX-CALAX Link Extension also in August 2025, envisioned to stimulate commerce and industry in Cavite, Laguna and Metro Manila. 

     “The Presidential imprimatur has resonated as the President’s  marching orders for our CIC project managers and our two contractors to speed up the construction so that the two segments will be ready for full operations on August 2025,” Ignacio pointed out.

    Right-of-way acquisition

    For both construction projects, Ignacio earlier met his right-of-way (ROW) acquisition team in order to resolve all issues to ultimately clear the way for the road alignments and access roads. Progress has been made in CIC’s mix of persuasive initiatives addressed to project affected persons (PAPs) made up of legal, financial and communication strategies, Ignacio added.

    At press time, the ROW status of Segment 3B of the C5 Link stands at 70.60 percent, leaving the CIC ROW project managers only 29.4 percent balance to finish the job, Ignacio added. On the other hand, the progress of the CAVITEX-CALAX Link ROW acquisition is ahead with 77.14 percent, leaving CIC only 22.86 percent to clear the way for this alignment.

    “With this new impetus from the Palace, we will beat our construction deadline — and the winner is every motorist and passenger south of Metro Manila and beyond,” Ignacio said.

    The Rotaract Club of Calumpit is proud to announce the launch of its “Breaking Barriers” project, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to promoting the rights and empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). This project aims to challenge societal stigma, advocate for equality, and foster an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

    The “Breaking Barriers” project will focus on several key areas:

    1. Advocacy and Awareness: Through targeted campaigns and community engagement, we aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by PWDs and the importance of inclusivity.
    2. Education and Empowerment: We will provide resources and opportunities for education, skills development, and employment to empower PWDs and help them achieve their full potential.
    3. Community Building: By creating supportive networks and fostering a sense of belonging, we will help PWDs connect with others, share experiences, and build a stronger, more inclusive community.

    Sun Life Foundation promotes food security and livelihood sustainability in Surigao del Norte


    Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, Inc. (Sun Life Foundation), the philanthropic arm of Sun Life Philippines, recently handed over two food sheds to the barangays of Caub and Halian in the fifth-class municipality of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte providing better access to better nutrition and additional income for the locals.

    Titled “Food Shed Farming Enterprise,” the project aims to provide the low-income barangays with
    improved food security and a sustainable agriculture-based livelihood. The turnover ceremony, held on May 10, 2024, was a key milestone in Sun Life Foundation’s ongoing collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines.

    Situated on small islands west of Siargao, Caub and Halian have long faced challenges due to their remote location. The barangays rely on the main Siargao island and Surigao City for the supply of fresh produce, but distance renders the food supply chain vulnerable to disruptions such as extreme weather conditions due to climate change and lockdowns during the pandemic. The communities’ dependence on the fishing industry, whose yield varies by season, also poses a grave challenge to achieving food security.

    The food sheds mitigate these challenges by using sustainable and highly replicable technologies. The project provides access to safe and quality food, thereby reducing the communities’ reliance on the main islands and improving local food security. It also augments the residents’ income, as produce from the food sheds can be sold to nearby communities through improved market linkages. The project also enhances the barangays’ climate resilience through the adoption of climate-adaptive green farming technologies including waste recycling, composting, rainwater harvesting, and natural pest and disease control. Additionally, the project provides financial education to reinforce the long-term sustainability of the agro based enterprise.

    The food sheds are the result of the Sun Life Foundation’s enduring commitment to promoting health, especially in remote areas. The project directly benefits 250 individuals by providing produce and livelihood. It also indirectly benefits 2,943 barangay residents by giving greater access to fresh and locally produced nutrient-rich food.

    It is Sun Life Foundation’s mission to uplift the lives of marginalized Filipinos. Through projects like the “Food Shed Farming Enterprise” that foster health, education, and environmental sustainability, the Foundation seeks to build a brighter future for every Filipino.
