LG announces L5 debut in Europe, Asia, the Philippines and other regions to follow

Ever since we finished our review of the LG Optimus L3 and L7, we wondered when the middle child of the L-style series of devices would make it’s appearance. Well, seems like it’ll be hitting our market soon – LG has just announced that the L5 has made its debut in Europe, and has promised that it would make a splash to other regions (including Asia) soon. This 9.5mm smartphone bears a 4-inch display, 800MHz processor, dual-SIM capabilities (for Asian markets) and NFC “Tag & Play” (for Europe and North America). If LG follows the same release schedule it has made for the other L devices, you can expect the L5 to hit our shores two to three weeks from now, and you can expect it to bear a lower price point than  the L7 – if we had to guess, you can expect it’s price to hit around 8K-12K once it lands in the Philippines.

Apple will supposedly charge $199 for a battery change in the next generation MacBook Pro

We’ve discussed how Apple’s new Retina display equipped MacBook Pro is a headache to repair (at least, to amateurs). Here’s another thing to consider before buying Apple’s latest and greatest: battery changes. MacRumors is reporting that a battery change for the new MacBook Pro will supposedly cost $199 (that’s Php 8,400) an increase from the standard $129 (about Php 5,450) charge on the previous generation MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. And forget about servicing the battery yourself – as we discussed before, the battery of the next generation MacBook Pro is glued to the body of the assembly, which means there is a chance that a user will be break the batteries or assembly when they try to pry it out themselves (if you could get past the proprietary Pentalobe screws). In Apple’s credit, they do offer a standard 1-year warranty and say that the new battery included with the MacBook Pro is good for up to 1,000 charges before the battery capacity drops to 80%.

AOC’s 23-inch AIRE iPLAY display doubles as an iPod/iPhone dock

AOC has just introduced their 23-inch AIRE iPLAY display that also doubles as an iPhone/iPod dock. This particular display is a slim, 12.9mm thin deal that’s capable of running content from either your iPhone or iPod on its 23-inch, LED full HD screen. The screen has integrated speakers on the bottom, so you won’t have to worry about sound as far as your content goes. The display is also capable of running console games on its 23-inch display, which lends itself to being more versatile than your regular desktop monitor. AOC promises a 2ms response time and 50M dynamic contrast ratio. This particular display is already listed in AOC’s US site and retails for $280 (or about Php 11,800) though there’s no word on its price and availability here in the Philippines.

Leaked Microsoft document details XBOX 720, coming 2013 with improved Kinect hardware

The Verge has reported that a leaked 56-page document that’s supposedly from Microsoft details the company’s plans for their next gaming console, the XBOX 720. Hardware-wise, the XBOX 720 is an incremental improvement over their old machine, and will carry Blu-ray support, native 3D output and glasses, concurrent apps, and additional sensor and peripheral support. The document promises 6x the performance jump from the old machine, and will either have six or eight ARM  or x86 cores running at 2GHz each with 4GB of DDR4 memory with three PPC cores clocked at 3.2GHz for backwards compatibility with old XBOX 360 titles. On the Kinect side, you’re looking at higher accuracy when replicating movements, four player tracking, higher voice recognition accuracy, better RGB camera and dedicated hardware processing. The document also details “Fortaleza” Kinect Glasses, a research project that the company has been working on. From the description, the project seems to be similar to Google’s Project Glass, though the document details a 2014 launch target date, so it’s unlikely that it’ll show up along with the XBOX 720 next year.

    Intel hybrid ultrabook eyes-on

We just wrapped up today’s Ivy Bridge launch, and one of things that Intel brought along with them was an experimental, hybrid ultrabook.

Now, this particular device isn’t built by any manufacturer – it’s apparently a prototype device put together by Intel (or one of their OEMs) to showcase what ultrabooks are capable of in the months and years ahead.

The device has hinge that allows the screen to rotate and transform from ultrabook to tablet. From what we can tell, the device has a 13.3-inch screen, and quickly transforms from notebook to tablet in seconds.

As far as specs are concerned, we can only speculate what’s in it – the only thing that we are sure of is that it’s running Intel’s Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor. The Intel exec that brought it to the Philippines was tight lipped about the other things inside it, but we might guess some sort of SSD deal going on along with at least 4GB of DDR3 memory. We probably won’t see this device for sale anytime soon, but it’s a snapshot of where future ultrabook designs are going.

    NEO Ultrabook EDGE series eyes-on

We’re at Intel’s local launch of Ivy Bridge here in Rockwell tonight, and while Intel was doing their usual parade of notebooks and devices armed with the new processor, we spotted a newly announced devices in the crowd. Meet NEO’s own interpretation of the ultrabook – the NEO EDGE. This particular device is a 14-inch ultrabook that’s honestly not the lightest ultrabook that we’ve ever seen, but hey, an ultrabook is an ultrabook.

The keyboard felt good – not as fantastic as the one on the HP Folio 13 or the one in the Lenovo U300s, but it still had plenty of travel and wasn’t as horrible as first ultrabooks that came out. The trackpad though needed a lot of work – the rightmost edge of the plastic trackpad felt like it was getting caught on something, and wasn’t as smooth as we’ve expected.

Like we said, the device uses a 14-inch display, has a multitude of input ports and an optical disk drive.  The EDGE has a next generation Core i5 processor, 4GB off DDR3 RAM and sports a 500GB HDD for storage which is paired with a 32GB SSD drive for fast booth times. It’s possibly the most affordable utralbook we’ve ever seen, as it’ll only retail for Php 33,999 – not bad for what you’re getting. Expect it to hit stores soon – if it hasn’t already.

    Sony announces high-end Cyber-shot

We’re all familiar with Sony’s Cyber-shot series of point-and-shoots, and we might have noticed that the company lacked a high-end model in their compact camera range—until now. Sony has announced the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100, which is the first Sony compact that can capture RAW files, a feature usually found on DSLRs. It’s based around a 20-megapixel, 1-inch CMOS sensor and features a 28-100mm equivalent lens with an F1.8-4.9 aperture range as well as image stabilization. It’s capable of shooting videos in 1080p60 and capture 17-megapixel still images at the same time. Another DSLR-like trait the new Cyber-shot will have is its 3:2 aspect ratio sensor. It’s also the first Sony compact camera to feature the company’s WhiteMagic LCD technology that offers a brighter or lower-power display. The DSC-RX100 will be available start in July 2012 at a price of around US $649 (approximately Php 27,200).

Microsoft has a “major announcement” on Monday, rumors say it’s their own Windows 8 tablet

Microsoft has sent out invites to a mysterious “major announcement” this coming Monday, which pundits say will be be centered around their Windows 8 tablet strategy. All Things D says that the coming announcement will be something more drastic than just outlining their tablet strategy – the tech outfit expects Microsoft to unveil their own Windows 8 tablet, something that the company has never done before. Remember, Microsoft is primarily a software company, and aside from their XBOX line and failed Zune line, they usually leave the building of hardware to their partners, such as Toshiba, Samsung, Asus and Lenovo. If this is true, then Microsoft would be significantly changing the dynamic of how it does business with its partners, as well as anger some of them, as a large majority of them already have their own Windows 8 tablets in the pipeline. This doesn’t mean that Microsoft couldn’t go forward with their own Windows 8 tablet – Google has their own Nexus line, even though the Android OS is being carried by other manufacturers – though it does mean that Microsoft will really need to differentiate their own product from the devices built by its partners.

Razer Blade now available to buy outside of US, Singapore gets first dibs

Remember the Razer Blade, the notebook that the peripheral accessory maker said proves that PC gaming isn’t dead? Well, if you’ve been waiting for that particular gaming notebook to mosey on out to other regions aside the US, you’re in luck – if you live in Singapore that is. Razer has announced it has made the Blade available for purchase in Singapore, marking the tiny island nation the first to get this particular notebook aside from the US. Unfortunately, the specifications of the Blade seems to have not changed since its introduction last year (the GPU is still the previous generation Fermi one, and we’re pretty sure this thing still rocks Sandybridge) so the steep S$3,999.99 (about Php 132,952) price might not be for everyone. Still, we’re pretty sure there will be people out there who would want a piece of this, so if you guys have relatives in Singapore (or have a way to send it from Singapore to here), you can hit up this link to get it.

Tiny island territory has huge Web presence

    0

Generic top-level domains (gLTDs) are in high demand, with .com and .org being the most popular, and with many new ones being added to the list, including .google and even .lol, the Internet is becoming more and more crowded. The application for a gLTD costs $186,000, so many website owners are turning to cheaper alternatives, one of the most popular being .tk, which is the third most popular country code top-level domain (for example, the Philippines is .ph) after Germany (.de) and the United Kingdom (.uk).

Who exactly owns the .tk domain? The tiny island territory of Tokelau, home to 0nly 1,300 people on a total land area of only four square miles. Tokelau is also the world’s smallest economy. Getting there is no easy task. The closest you can approach by plane is West Samoa, which is still 332 mi (510 km) away. From there, you board a cruise ship which anchors well off the coast of Tokelau, and paddle a canoe to shore. The .tk domain is host to almost nine million websites, which is responsible for almost one-sixth of its GDP ($1.2 million a year), and is adding a million more each month.

The man responsible for popularizing the .tk domain, Dutch national Joost Zuurbier, brought the Internet to the small island nation, which, before his arrival, had never even seen a webpage. “We had to explain to them what they had and what the Internet was in order to get things going,” Zuurbier said. An Internet connection in Tokelau costs about $2,000 a month. “They had four phone lines, and that was basically it. We brought them the connectivity, and now there are 120 computers on the island, mostly laptops, because the power goes off at 10 p.m.”

Peugeot to bring STOP & START system vehicles to PH

    1

Statistics from French car company Peugeot show that vehicles in the metropolis are idle roughly 30% of the time. So much unnecessary fuel is wasted as the vehicle keeps its engine running even at a standstill. What’s worse is that it increases emissions of carbon dioxide. It is for this reason that Peugeot has decided to bring in vehicles that feature its revolutionary fuel-saving STOP & START system.

The STOP & START system uses what they call a micro-hybridization technology comprised of the combination of a 1.6 liter HDi Euro 5 diesel engine and a reversible alternator. This ensures the STOP & START function while relying on an alternator control system to recover energy during deceleration and a hybrid battery to store and deliver additional energy on startup. This simply means that your vehicle’s engine switches off and goes into standby mode whenever you’re at a red light or stuck in traffic. It then instantly restarts in 400ms on acceleration without additional user intervention. With this kind of technology, you no longer have to worry about using up too much fuel while being at a standstill. You don’t have to worry about successive start-ups either. If your vehicle has a STOP & START function, you can restart automatically, thanks to the reversible alternator technology.

Peugeot’s Philippine line-up consists mainly of vehicles with diesel engines, which is quite surprising because this kind of fuel-saving technology is harder to achieve in these vehicles.

Several studies in other countries show that the STOP & START system has helped in reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Judging by the looks of our metropolis, we are in dire need of more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly vehicles, and this technology from Peugeot just might be the solution.

Nokia prepares to sell luxury Vertu brand and cut 10000 jobs

It seems that Nokia’s painful restructuring process has just turned very real for 10,000 people, as the Finnish manufacturer has announced it will be laying off 10,000 workers globally as second quarter losses from its phone business was larger than expected. “These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia’s long-term competitive strength,” Mr Elop said in a statement. The job cuts will also be accompanied by plant closings, as well as closing some R&D locations, like those located in  Ulm in Germany and Burnaby in Canada. The company has also confirmed that it will be also selling Vertu, its luxury mobile phone division to a private equity firm EQT. Nokia will still have a 10% minority stake in the brand, though the new owners have said that they plan to develop the brand independently.
