The Philippine government, nickel mining companies, and downstream users of nickel, including electric vehicle (EV) and battery companies, must take immediate steps to prevent and remedy environmental degradation and human rights abuses resulting from nickel mining, Climate Rights International said in a new report. The Philippines is the second largest producer of nickel and the world’s leading exporter of raw nickel ore, a mineral used in batteries for EVs and energy storage.
In the 106-page report, “Broken Promises: Philippines Nickel Mining Causes Rights Abuses and Increases Climate Vulnerability,” Climate Rights International interviewed 57 residents and workers who live near nickel mines in Dinagat Island and Surigao del Sur in the Caraga Region of Mindanao, the heart of the Philippines’ mining industry. The Caraga Region has 23 operating nickel mines, more than any other region in the Philippines. Community members report increased vulnerability to the climate crisis linked to mining; the destruction of fishing and farming livelihoods; severe environmental pollution that threatens drinking water and health; increased rates of food insecurity; new difficulties accessing education; a lack of accountability for harms; and attacks, killings, criminalization, and intimidation of those who speak out, including environmental and human rights defenders.

Climate Rights International has previously reported on similar human rights, environmental, and climate harms linked to nickel mining and processing in Indonesia. Multinational companies benefiting from the nickel supply chain have done little to address the documented harms and abuses.
“Nickel is important for the transition to renewable energy, but in the Philippines nickel mining is destroying fishing and farming livelihoods, creating food insecurity, and causing noxious pollution of drinking water,” said Krista Shennum, researcher at Climate Rights International. “Environmental and human rights defenders face attacks, criminalization, and even death for speaking out. The Philippines government needs to prioritize the rights and well-being of frontline mining communities—who bear no responsibility for the climate crisis—by holding companies accountable for abuses and environmental harms.”

Nickel mining is making local communities more vulnerable to climate impacts, including extreme weather events. Nickel mining operations drive deforestation and the loss of species that provide climate resilience, such as terrestrial and mangrove forests. When deforestation occurs, carbon stored in both plant matter and soil may be released into the atmosphere, turning a carbon sink into a source of emissions. Residents in Tubajon on Dinagat Island in Mindanao described how the loss of forests and mangroves due to mining operations and mining-related pollution has made their communities more exposed to storm surges, high winds, and flooding during extreme weather events like the devastating Super Typhoon Odette in 2021.
For communities that have historically supported themselves through fishing, pollution from nickel mining is posing an existential threat to their way of life. In Dinagat Island and Surigao del Sur, fisherfolk interviewed by Climate Rights International described how water pollution from mining areas has harmed fisheries and made it more difficult, if not impossible, for people to continue fishing.
Across the region, farmers described how mining has made farming much more difficult, and in some cases impossible, due to the loss of their farmland, frequent flooding of fields from mining choked rivers, and dust and water pollution from nearby mining activities. Rice, the most important staple food of the region, is particularly affected because it is grown in lowland areas that are susceptible to flooding and siltation.
Poor mining practices in the Philippines are threatening the fundamental right to food. Pollution from nickel mining and the resulting negative impact on livelihoods is making it difficult for many families to feed themselves. According to Analiza, a 46-year-old mother of four from Tubajon, Dinagat Island, “It is now hard to feed my family. We are hungry most of the time.”
Nickel mining in the Caraga Region is also polluting important water sources that residents depend on for their drinking water. Residents in Dinagat Island described how siltation and runoff from mining operations have polluted their drinking water. Residents living near nickel mines in Dinagat Island and Surigao del Sur told Climate Rights International that they are concerned that recently developed health problems, including respiratory and skin ailments, are related to pollution from nearby mines.
The Philippines is the most dangerous country in Asia to be a land and environmental defender. Multiple people interviewed by Climate Rights International reported knowing individuals whose killings they believe were linked to their anti-mining activities or who had experienced attacks, harassment, or intimidation themselves. Some individuals in the Caraga Region and across the Philippines who have challenged mining companies have faced Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) that they believe are intended to silence their activism.
Despite the wealth generated for mining companies by their nickel mining operations, some residents in Dinagat Island reported not receiving adequate compensation for the use of their land, destruction of their crops, or use of their homes and other structures.
“People living in mining communities are facing significant harms from powerful companies who act with almost total impunity,” said Shennum. “As one of the countries most impacted by the climate crisis, the Philippines government should be focused on holding companies accountable and ensuring that the nickel industry isn’t exacerbating the impacts of climate change on local communities.”
Government and Corporate Responsibility
A general lack of transparency by many mining companies impacts the ability of local governments and communities to actively participate in approving mining projects or monitoring mining impacts. Despite ongoing complaints from local communities, those directly impacted face a lack of accountability and remedies for the harms they have suffered.
Climate Rights International called on the Philippines government, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, to fully enforce and strengthen laws and regulations to minimize the impacts of nickel mining on communities. The government should urgently stop the permitting of new mines until the industry meets domestic and international environmental standards, including in the management of mining waste.
Harms to local communities and the environment are being driven by the individual and cumulative activities of these nickel mining projects, Climate Rights International said. Many nickel mining companies in the Caraga Region have links to powerful actors in the Philippines, including active and former politicians, politically connected families, and wealthy businesspeople. Nickel companies should take immediate steps to remedy water and air pollution caused by their operations and properly dispose of mine waste to minimize environmental pollution.
Electric vehicle and battery companies that directly or indirectly source nickel from the Philippines should use their leverage to ensure suppliers end and remedy rights abuses, clean up water and air pollution, and protect the rights of environmental and human rights defenders, Climate Rights International said. Electric vehicle companies should also increase transparency by providing public information about all companies in their transition mineral supply chains.
“Electric vehicle and battery companies have unique leverage to demand that the mining industry cleans up its act,” said Shennum. “Their customers are environmentally conscious and will decide to buy from companies with the cleanest record. If EV companies want to position themselves as global leaders in the fight against climate change, they must demand that mining companies in their supply chains respect the rights of communities and end environmentally destructive practices.”

vivo’s mid-range V-series has always managed to impress in one way or another. Some years, it leads the pack in design; other times, it stands out for having one of the best cameras in its class. As the V-series continues to expand, vivo has added a more affordable option in the form of the V-series Lite.
Last year’s V40 Lite proved to be a pleasant surprise during a brief out-of-town trip, delivering good performance at a friendly price. This time around, vivo is aiming higher with the V60 Lite, a compact phone that’s punching well above its weight. It already had us impressed with its bold Pop Pink finish, but how does it perform in everyday use?
Design – 4.5/5
vivo may have created one of its trendiest mid-rangers yet with the V60 Lite. Our review unit came in the eye-catching Pop Pink colorway, which instantly drew attention the moment we opened the box. Despite having a mostly plastic build, the phone feels surprisingly premium thanks to its smooth matte finish and solid construction.
At 194 grams, it’s light and comfortable to hold for long periods.
The front is dominated by a 6.77-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support, offering punchy colors and smooth scrolling. The back houses the 50MP main and 8MP ultra-wide cameras, along with vivo’s AI Aura Light. Up top are the secondary speaker and mic, while the power and volume buttons sit on the right. At the bottom, you’ll find the SIM tray, USB-C port, and main speaker.
Hardware – 4/5
The V60 Lite comes in three variants: the base 4G model (our review unit), a 5G version with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, and a top-tier 5G model with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. The main difference between them lies in the processor — the 5G variants use a MediaTek Dimensity 7360-Turbo chipset, while the 4G model runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 685.
The Snapdragon 685 isn’t the fastest chip around, but it handles day-to-day tasks well. We were able to play Honor of Kings and Call of Duty: Mobile comfortably on medium settings.
Benchmark results were in line with expectations for its class:
The camera setup is a pleasant surprise for a Lite model. The 50MP Sony IMX 882 main sensor captures sharp and well-balanced photos with accurate colors. The 8MP ultra-wide camera performs well under good lighting, and the 32MP front camera takes clean, detailed selfies. Video recording is limited to 1080p at 30fps on the 4G variant, while the 5G model can shoot up to 4K if needed.
One of the V60 Lite’s best features is its massive 6,500mAh BlueVolt battery. It easily lasted a full day of heavy use and nearly two days on moderate use. In PCMark’s battery test, it clocked an impressive 19 hours and 27 minutes. Charging is just as fast: the 90W FlashCharge filled the battery from 20 percent to full in under an hour.
User Experience – 4/5
The vivo V60 Lite 4G turned out to be more capable than expected. Although its processor isn’t flagship-grade, it handled multitasking, gaming, and media consumption smoothly throughout our tests. vivo markets the V60 Lite as a workhorse, and it lived up to that promise.
Even after a full day of gaming, I still had enough battery left to watch a few episodes on Netflix before bed. The next morning, a quick charge was all it took to get back to 100 percent.
For media use, the HDR10 display is fantastic for streaming movies and videos. The stereo speakers deliver clear sound that can fill a small room. Gaming was also enjoyable, thanks to vivo’s Ultra Game Mode, which pushes the Snapdragon 685 a little further for resource-intensive titles. The Bypass Charging feature is a nice touch, allowing you to game while plugged in without overheating or stressing the battery.
Value – 4/5
Starting at PHP14,999 for the V60 Lite 4G, and PHP17,999 and PHP20,999 for the 5G variants, the V60 Lite offers excellent value for its price. You get a large battery, fast charging, and solid performance packed in a stylish design.
It may not be a flagship killer, but for its price range, the vivo V60 Lite is a reliable daily driver that looks good, lasts long, and delivers where it matters most.

Grab Philippines and MOVE IT, in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), officially inaugurated the Asenso Center in Marikina City — the first livelihood hub of its kind in Grab’s Southeast Asia network.
The one-hectare facility is designed to elevate and professionalize the onboarding of platform workers and entrepreneurs, accelerate AI-enabled earning opportunities for Filipinos, and streamline access to social protection programs via guided enrollment with SSS, Pag-IBIG, and PhilHealth, complemented by micro-insurance and welfare protection from Chubb and AXA.
Grab Philippines country managing director Ronald Roda shares, “Grab is one of the Philippines’ most mature platform-work ecosystems, and that gives us a precise, ground-level understanding of what Filipino platform workers and micro-entrepreneurs truly need to thrive. The Asenso Center turns that insight into action. It opens dignified, digitally powered livelihoods, equips our partners with practical AI co-pilots, and helps families convert opportunity into income at scale.”
DICT Secretary Henry Agudaunderscored the crucial role of the gig economy in uplifting the lives of Filipinos. He described Grab and MOVE IT partners as the “frontline of the digital economy.”
“In every trip you take, there’s a child who gets to eat, tuition that gets paid, and medical bills that are settled—that’s the future. This is what real change looks like—you are the frontline of the digital economy,” Aguda said.
DICT Sec. Henry Aguda emphasized the critical role of public-private partnerships in achieving the agency’s goal of creating millions of digital livelihoods in the Philippines.
A flagship for professionalized, AI-enabled livelihoods
The Asenso Center is poised to support Grab’s commitment to generating 500,000 livelihood opportunities for the Philippine government. The leading superapp said it has already delivered new livelihoods equivalent to 73% of its five-year target, putting the company on track to exceed its goal ahead of schedule. Merchant participation is also rising, with the number of Community Merchants up 30% year on year as more local entrepreneurs formalize online.
Furthermore, the Asenso Center embeds AI enablement into the growth pathways of partners, offering mobile-first tools like Merchant AI Assistant and AI Driver Companion, and pairing these with merchant and driver training to ensure that they can leverage these tools responsibly and safely.
Merchants can use a mobile-first “Merchant AI Assistant”, which is an AI co-pilot that aids in day-to-day tasks such as setting up seasonal promotions, automating menu set-ups, producing ready-to-post marketing content, and surfacing demand insights for inventory and staffing. Drivers, on the other hand, access an in-app “AI Driver Companion” for real-time route optimization and demand hotspot guidance – reducing idle time and lifting overall earnings.
Among those leveraging the Merchant AI Assistant is Marvin Catimbang, chief operating officer of Coffee Blanc and a GrabFood 5-Star Eats Merchant-Partner. “The Merchant AI Assistant is an incredible day-to-day help for us, especially in tasks previously done manually, such as generating descriptions for our menu items or updating our store hours. It’s a handy partner for MSMEs like us. The AI assistant has also been very helpful in analyzing consumer insights, which is critical to the growth of our business.”
“Used responsibly, AI becomes a force multiplier — an exponent on every hour of work online,” Roda added. “Our goal is to make enterprise-grade tools accessible on a smartphone, raise standards of safety and service, and broaden the preparedness and participation of our partners in the rising AI economy.”
Viable Earnings and Accessible Social Protection
Grab said platform productivity is also calibrated, so active partners who work at least eight hours a day can hit family-sustaining income levels. Many surpass that benchmark based on active hours, time of day, service type, and demand patterns.
MOVE IT rider-partner and community leader Nica “Khang” Brieta shared how her earnings as a moto-taxi rider has enabled her to fund her education and that of her sister. “Dahil po sa kita ko sa MOVE IT, napag-aral ko po ang aking sarili pati ang aking kapatid. Nasisiguro ko rin na natutustusan ko ang medikal na pangangailangan ng aking anak, na napakahalaga para sa akin bilang isang solo parent. Sa MOVE IT, empowered kaming mga kababaihan na makipagsabayan sa kalsada para kumita nang patas para sa aming mga pamilya.”
To align earnings with flexibility in social protection, partners can choose which programs to contribute to and when. At the Asenso Center, enrollment counters for SSS, Pag-IBIG and PhilHealth sit alongside onboarding and skills assessments, and private coverage is available on an opt-in basis, allowing workers to tailor benefits to their needs. For top performers, Grab and MOVE IT subsidize Pag-IBIG contributions and provide free life-insurance coverage in addition to the standard on-trip insurance.

Grab’s AI follows four simple rules: it must improve safety, protect privacy, keep people in control, and be easy to learn. That means tested features that encourage safer behavior and fair reviews, data minimization with in-app controls, human override on all AI-suggestions, and bite-sized tutorials so drivers and merchants can use AI confidently to lift earnings and service quality.
“AI should reward effort, and not replace it,” Roda said. “Our responsibility is to lower the barrier to entry for the AI economy, protect user trust, and ensure Filipino workers and MSMEs capture the upside.”
