Friendster – you have until May 31 to save your photos, content

    3

Once upon a time, everyone had a Friendster account, Facebook was but a start-up, and we were still asking our friends, pa-testi naman jan o. But then Facebook happened, and the once proud king of the local social networking scene slowly began to lose relevance. Now, it’s about to lose users’ content too. Friendster has announced that it’s deleting all the photos, messages, comments, testimonials, shoutouts, blogs, forums and groups that users have, as the site is undergoing some major restructuring of the site. It’s included a handy little app, called the Friendster Exporter to allow you to lift all of the content that you have from the site. You’ll still retain your account however, as site says “Your Friendster account will not be deleted.  You will still have the same email login and password in the new Friendster.  Also, your list of friends will be preserved, along with your basic profile information.”

This leads us to believe that Friendster may be going the way of MySpace, as MOL Global (the company that owns Friendster) Ganesh Bangah explained that the new Friendster aims not to compete with, but will instead try to complement with Facebook.

Sony’s entering the tablet game with the S1 and S2 with Honeycomb on board

    1

Sony is the latest manufacturer to throw in its hat in the tablet arena with the 9.4-inch S1 and the dual screened S2. Both devices will run Honeycomb, Google’s Tablet OS. The 9.4-inch S1 is tailored to be more of a multimedia tablet, and as such is designed like a wedge to facilitate better handling. There’s also an IR transmitter built into the S1, which will allow it to control other devices in the house like TVs and the like. The S1 is Playstation Certified, meaning its part of a new program from Sony Computer Entertainment that extends the PlayStation gaming platform to other devices.

The S2 meanwhile, has two 5.5 inch screens (ala a DS) and is small enough to fit in your pocket. It’s also PlayStation Certified, meaning its focus is more of a gaming device, with the top part of the screen handling the graphics and the bottom facilitating the controls. The two screen design also makes it a natural candidate for an e-reader app that you can actually use like a book.

“Sony Tablet’ delivers an entertainment experience where users can enjoy cloud-based services on-the-go at any time. We’re aiming to create a new lifestyle by integrating consumer hardware, including ‘Sony Tablet’ with content and network,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, Corporate Executive, SVP, and Deputy President of Consumer Products & Services Group.

Potential users will be able to download music and other media through Sony’s Qriocityservice, which connects many of Sony’s network-enabled devices. There’s no word on pricing and firm release date however.

Is this the new iPhone 5?

    4

Apple usually announces new iPhones around the months of June-July, and since we’re getting closer and closer to the eventual iPhone 5 announcement, you all know what that means – it’s iPhone 5 rumor time! According to former Engadget Editor Joshua Topolsky who has close ties within the industry, the new iPhone 5 will be “radically redesigned” and will have more of a tapering, teardrop shape going down. This directly contradicts reports from news agency Reuters that the iPhone 5 will look similar to the iPhone 4, with the former receiving a spec bump and not much else. Other redesigned elements include the button, which Topolsky notes will do double duty as a gesture area, and the  that the screen on the device will occupy the entire  front of the phone, with almost no bezel. The screen size will go up slightly to 3.7-inches while retaining the same resolution.

Will his predictions come true? There’s only one sure way to find out, and that’s when Apple officially announces the iPhone 5 in June/July/Sometime this year.

Nintendo Wii 2 to be launched in 2012

    1

Here’s something to go “Weeeeeee!” about next year. It has been confirmed that Nintendo will be unveiling the Wii 2 at the Los Angeles Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) some time June 2012.

In its investor relations information website, Nintendo released a brief announcement which coincided with the release of the veteran manufacturer’s earnings for the fiscal year ending 31 March 2011, which show a 52% fall in operating income, from ¥356bn (£2.6bn) in 2010 to ¥171bn. Worldwide annual sales of Wii hardware have also fallen from just over 20m in 2010 to 15.08m.

With the Wii successor, Nintendo should be able to maintain its position as the most successful console compared to the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3.

“Project Café,” as the Wii 2 is allegedly called, is rumored to be more powerful than the current Wii, which reportedly includes a triple-core IBM PowerPC processor and an AMD Fusion graphics processing unit. It may also provide 1080p HD visuals and set to feature a controller with its own built-in 6-in display, effectively resembling a mini-tablet PC. This screen will be able to stream game visuals from the main console but the controller may also be able to operate as seperate handheld games devices.

PSN down again, anon up to its old tricks?

    1

PS3 owners might have noticed that they’ve been unable to log-in to the PSN these past few days, and many of you might have wondered why. It seems like the PSN network has been hacked anew, as Sony has said that the troubles might have been caused by  an “external intrusion”. Its the second time that the PSN has been maligned in such a way, and it’s not clear how long the network outage will last. This is starting to frustrate a lot of gamers, especially since the release of Valve’s critically acclaimed Portal 2 has cross platform capabilities allowing PC and PS3 owners to play together.

Revenge of the Sammy – Samsung files suit against Apple in Europe and Asia

    3

Oh, it’s on now. After being sued by Apple on grounds of copyright infringement, Korean tech giant Samsung has retaliated with a suit of its own, citing that Apple has infringed on patents on how to reduce transmission errors, reduce power during data transmission, and tether a device to a PC to share its data connection. According to a company rep, “Samsung is responding actively to the legal action taken against us in order to protect our intellectual property and to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business.”

The suits are puzzling to some, because aside from being rivals in tech sphere, they’re also business partners. It’s no secret that Apple uses Samsung chips to power their products. Apple on their part, recognizes this peculiar situation, with Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer saying that “We are Samsung’s largest customer, and Samsung is a very valued component supplier to us, and I expect the strong relationship will continue. Separately from this, we felt the mobile communication division of Samsung had crossed the line, and after trying for some time to work the issue, we decided we needed to rely on the courts.”

Intel confirms that Google Honeycomb is coming to x86 devices

    0

It’s no secret that all of that sweet, sweet Honeycomb love are all powered by ARM chips at this point in time. It’s a potentially large market that’s only getting bigger, and apparently Intel wants in on the action. The world’s largest chipmaker says that Google’s Honeycomb OS is being ported over to x86 chips, which include its Atom processors. This little tidbit was revealed last Tuesday during the chip maker’s Q1 financial results call. Paul Otellini, Intel’s CEO says that “We’ve received the Android code – the Honeycomb version of Android source code – from Google, and we’re actively doing the port on that”.

Intel is in a unique position here, as it has a wide array of partners and vendors that it can partner up with to deliver an x86 powered tablet. Manufacturers like ASUS, Acer, Toshiba…the list goes on and on. In fact, once the port is complete, there maybe a way to wrangle the x86 source code into current Windows powered tablets that are running Atom.

How soon will we see these new x86 powered Android tablets? Sooner than you think. Many have speculated that these new, Intel powered tablets may show up in this year’s COMPUTEX trade show set to begin in the 30th of May.

iFollow – iPhone records where you’ve been

    7

Now this is scary. According to an article in the Guardian, your iPhone apparently keeps track of where you’ve been and saves that data both on your phone and your computer when you sync. The file that contains the information keeps track of both the longitude and latitude of the phone’s coordinates along with a timestamp, which can easily be aggregated to see where you’ve been the past few days or months, essentially building a detailed picture of your daily routine. The tracking problem seems to have started from the last June update (2010) of the popular iOS Phone operating system.

“Apple has made it possible for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you’ve been,” said Pete Warden, one of the researchers who uncovered the potential issue. Additionally, the researches have looked at the Android OS has not found a similar tracking system. There’s no evidence that the data is being sent to Apple, but the mere fact that this particular problem exists is worrying. There’s also no known fix as of yet.

Globe enterprise customers benefit from cable investments

    0

Globe’s enterprise customers are benefiting from the Philippine telco’s investments in diverse cable systems.  Having a solid Business Continuity Program ensures quick crisis recovery and network resiliency critical to large industries that require uninterrupted operations and 24/7 connectivity.

The recent Japan quake, which affected five submarine cable systems, had very minimal impact to Globe customers.  Globe delivered stable connectivity to the US through the Unity Cable System and the Tata Global Network-Intra Asia Cable System (TGN-IA), which provided the capacity needed to reroute affected circuits.

According to Jesus C. Romero, head of enterprise segments in Globe Business, “Globe was ready and prepared.  When the earthquake struck, our international network rerouted all services immediately.  We were able to restore 100% of all voice and data services without IP traffic congestion on all international private networks.”

The Unity Cable System, activated in Q3-2010, is a trans-Pacific cable spanning 9,620-km between Japan and the US.  TGN-IA, which started serving enterprise customers in 2009, is a direct point-to-point express optical fiber submarine cable directly linking the Philippines to Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Vietnam.

Globe also has investments in the TGN-Pacific Cable, Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2), and City to City (C2C) cable network.  Other submarine networks utilized by Globe are South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe Cable Network 3 (SMW3), East Asia Crossing, Japan-US Cable Network (JUCN), and China-US Cable Network (CUCN).

Globe’s IP infrastructure is linked to multiple peers both globally and locally to ensure that enterprises experience the best route to access content and reach destinations across the internet.  Globe has more than 100Gbps IP port capacity for business continuity and seamless traffic flow in the Philippines and beyond.
