    Google PH launches Enhanced Play Protect, blocking over 3.2 million high-risk install attempts

    To help protect people from online scams, Google at Safer Internet Day announced a new feature for Android devices: Enhanced Play Protect.

    Financial fraud and scams pose a significant and escalating threat in the Philippines. A key contributor to this problem is the downloading of sideloaded apps—apps obtained from unofficial online sources rather than the Google Play Store. Often disguised as seemingly harmless quick loan apps or instant reward games, these malicious apps frequently steal personal data or funds.  

    To combat this growing challenge, Google introduced a major advancement in mobile user protection: Enhanced Google Play Protect. This enhanced security feature offers real-time scanning to better safeguard people against the dangers of sideloaded apps. Designed to detect malicious apps employing sophisticated techniques, including AI-driven evasion methods, this feature has already demonstrated significant improvements in user safety in India, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, and now, the Philippines.

    As of February 10, 2025, Enhanced Play Protect has blocked over 3.2 million high-risk app install attempts in the Philippines, preventing potentially devastating financial losses. To illustrate the impact, that’s the equivalent of PHP3.2 million saved, assuming a single peso loss per blocked install.

    “Online safety is crucial in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. Google is reinforcing its commitment to user security with the launch of Enhanced Play Protect in the Philippines. This innovation automatically blocks the installation of potentially harmful apps from unofficial sources. We applaud Google’s efforts to protect Filipinos online. By working together, we can build a stronger foundation for internet safety in the country,” said Emilio Benito Aquino, chairperson and CEO of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

    The power of local partnerships to create a safer online space 

    In addition to Enhanced Play Protect, Google has also teamed up with various content creators to promote online safety. This year, it tapped EduCreator Coach Lyqa for a new YouTube video debunking various cybersecurity myths, while in previous years it had partnered with the likes of Ben&Ben to help spread the message of internet safety through a song.

    Google is also expanding access to its #YOUTHink media literacy publication by releasing an Ilocano-language version. This inclusive initiative, designed to teach people how to fight misinformation, aims to reach more Filipinos across different regions. #YOUTHink is also currently available in Filipino, English, and Cebuano.

    Adjust: AI and privacy-first technologies fuel APAC’s e-commerce boom and mobile app growth in 2025

    Leading measurement and analytics company Adjust has released its annual Mobile App Trends report for 2025, showing strong momentum following the app economy’s 2022 dip. Across APAC, e-commerce, in particular, is soaring, seeing app install growth of 26% YoY in 2024, despite flat growth in sessions. Meanwhile, the average session length in APAC decreased slightly from 1.39 to 1.38, indicating a positive trend where shoppers are finding products and completing purchases more efficiently.

    Including expert tips from AppLovin, Adjust’s report explores key trends impacting the mobile app industry and the future of measurement – namely, the ways in which artificial intelligence (AI) is defining marketing operations and campaign performance measurement. 

    “In 2025, the mobile landscape will be defined by the extensive use of AI to create high-quality content, with AI-driven automation of production processes significantly enhancing consumer mobile applications through personalized user experiences,” said Andrey Kazakov, CEO of Adjust. “The trend of products built cross-platform will continue unabated, with mobile web playing a valuable role in growth strategies by enabling seamless transitions between mobile web and native apps.“

    Privacy-first tech paying off as consumer trust climbs 

    While data privacy regulations remain a significant barrier globally, resistance to change is seen to be slowing down and adoption of privacy-first technologies is increasing. AI and machine learning-powered advanced analytics and real-time contextual insights are speeding up decision-making and supercharging efficiency. 

    Meanwhile, App Tracking Transparency (ATT) opt-in rates are continuing to climb steadily – from an average of 32% to 35% globally by Q1 2025 – suggesting increased user trust and seeing value in useful, personalized ads. Gaming apps maintained the highest opt-in rate at 39%, while e-commerce and shopping apps increased significantly from 28% to 35%.

APAC users averaged 7.12 minutes per session, while global daily sessions dipped slightly from 1.54 to 1.52 minutes. Banking app installs rose 33% YoY worldwide, with sessions up 19%. Crypto app sessions jumped 45%, and payment app sessions grew 29%.

    “As mobile usage continues to thrive across APAC, fueled by the growing adoption of AI, it is  crucial for marketers to harness this momentum by refining their campaign strategies and delivering personalized user experiences,” said April Tayson, regional vice president for INSEAU at Adjust. “Our data highlights that markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, and India are spending significant time on different apps, offering businesses immense opportunities to drive growth and engagement in the years to come.”

    The report also explores the rise of ultracasual games; AI-powered hyperpersonalization from ad creatives to gameplay; the expansion of advertising channels in e-commerce; and crypto’s resurgence. These dynamics highlight the critical need for marketers to create seamless, omnichannel experiences that meet users wherever they are.

    Experience the DeepSeek R1 distilled ‘reasoning’ models on AMD Ryzen AI and Radeon

    Reasoning models are a new class of large language models (LLMs) designed to tackle highly complex tasks by employing chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning with the tradeoff of taking longer to respond. The DeepSeek R1 is a recently released frontier “reasoning” model that has been distilled into highly capable smaller models. Deploying these DeepSeek R1 distilled models on AMD Ryzen AI processors and Radeon graphics cards is incredibly easy and available now through LM Studio.

    Reasoning models add a “thinking” stage before the final output – which you can see by expanding the “thinking” window before the model gives its final answer. Unlike conventional LLMs, which one-shot the response, CoT LLMs perform extensive reasoning before answering. The assumptions and self-reflection the LLM performs are visible to the user, and this improves the reasoning and analytical capability of the model – albeit at the cost of a significantly longer time-to-first-(final output)token.

    A reasoning model may first spend thousands of tokens (and you can view this chain of thought!) to analyze the problem before giving a final response. This allows the model to be excellent at complex problem-solving tasks involving math and science and attack a complex problem from all angles before deciding on a response.     MOVE IT, MMDA strengthen partnership for road safety

    MOVE IT is reinforcing its commitment to road safety in collaboration with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). The homegrown motorcycle taxi company has donated brand-new helmets to the agency’s Motorcycle Riding Academy (MRA), aiding in MMDA’s goal of making two-wheel training courses more accessible to current and aspiring motorcycle riders. 

    The MRA offers free riding training sessions conducted by expert instructors, with a curriculum designed for both beginners and experienced riders. As participants are required to bring their personal gear, the donation of brand-new helmets helps lower barriers to participation in the free course. 

    This is the latest initiative in the long-standing partnership between MOVE IT and MMDA. The collaboration has previously included MMDA’s facilitation of various road safety courses, both for MOVE IT’s on-ground road safety training program and its in-app learning platform for rider-partners, the MOVE IT Academy.     Ronchris Cosme, head of art at GIGIL, talked about the challenges in making campaigns and the creative solutions they used to overcome them. During the panel discussion, when asked about the brainstorming process, he emphasized how trial and error is crucial. He encouraged an open flow of ideas without judgment to keep things from getting blocked.

He shared the mantra, “Always ask yourself, what would you do if you weren’t afraid?” and urged ADPR professionals to embrace nervousness as a sign they’re on the right path. During the panel discussion, he stressed that staying hungry is a must, for the ADPR industry is not easy to be in. 

    Talking about the importance of taking risks in campaign creation, Margie Flores Husmalaga, Media Director, stated that playing it safe only leads to being ignored. Her message was clear: be brave, be bold, and be true to your vision. She encouraged creating unique possibilities that set your brand apart. When asked about the efficient way to take a conventional approach to a campaign, Margie said, “You don’t ask yourself, do I have to make it unconventional or conventional? You just have to make it creative.”

    TransUnion PH appoints Peter Faulhaber as president and CEO

    Globe reaffirms commitment to online child safety, seeks closer public-private collaboration

    Globe has called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to combat growing threats to child safety online, as it reaffirms its commitment to internet safety on Safer Internet Day.

    With the rapid evolution of digital technology, the internet has become both a vital tool and a potential risk, exposing children to exploitation and harm. The Philippines is the world’s highest producer of content rooted in online child sexual abuse and exploitation, according to a study led by the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). 

    Globe believes in promoting responsible and sustainable internet use— ensuring that digital platforms are not used to cause harm while also empowering individuals to use online resources for learning, productivity, and economic growth.

    “Public and private sectors need to work closely together, now more than ever, to fight growing threats to child safety online. As they say, it takes a village to raise a child. We also would like to say, in today’s highly digital world, it takes a village– in fact, the whole nation– to protect every Filipino child,” said Carlo Santos, senior director for Analytics and Stakeholder Engagement at Globe.

    Globe has taken a proactive stance in protecting children online, investing USD2.7 million for content-filtering technology that blocks malicious sites, including those with child sexual abuse content.

    In 2024 alone, the company blocked 3,096 child pornography domains and URLs, including 387 cases of AI-generated or computer-generated imagery depicting child abuse. 

    It also works closely with government agencies, the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators (PCTO), and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to effectively fend off online threats against children. 

    While these measures serve as immediate interventions, Globe emphasizes the need for long-term solutions to evolving online threats. 

    At the frontlines of online child safety

    To help promote online safety among children and their carers, Globe continues to drive digital literacy through its Digital Thumbprint Program, which has educated thousands of children and teens since its launch in 2017. In 2024 alone, DTP reached 6,194 young Filipinos across the country, equipping them with the knowledge to protect themselves from online risks.

    Parents also play a critical role in internet safety. Through its MakeItSafe website, Globe helps parents decode digital language, identifying seemingly harmless terms that may have hidden sexual connotations and serve as red flags for potential exploitation.

    Meanwhile, senior citizens — often targets of online scams — get essential digital safety training under the Senior Digizen program, helping them recognize and avoid cyber fraud.

    Globe also recognizes that poverty is a major driver of Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material (CSAEM). Economic desperation can lead individuals to resort to exploitative practices. 

    To address this, Globe launched The Hapag Movement in 2023, providing food and livelihood assistance to over 120,000 families, helping them become financially self-sufficient.

    Globe calls on policymakers, industry leaders, and the broader community to work together in building a safer and more secure digital environment for future generations.

    160-km Freedom March to honor WWII Heroes resumes in 2025

    The legacy of valor and sacrifice continues as descendants of World War II Filipino and U.S. veterans, alongside military personnel, government officials, members of the diplomatic community, students, and families, take part in the annual Freedom March. This historic event commemorates the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Bataan and honors the heroic endurance of those who endured the infamous Bataan Death March.

    Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB), in partnership with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) and the Department of National Defense (DND), will once again lead this solemn tribute on March 1-2, 2025. The 160-kilometer commemorative walk traces the exact historical route of the Death March, starting from Mariveles, Bataan, and concluding in Capas, Tarlac.

    “The Freedom March is more than just a walk; it is a moving testament to the courage and sacrifice of our World War II heroes. As we retrace their steps, we ensure that their stories live on, inspiring future generations with their legacy of resilience and patriotism,” said Mike Villa-Real, PVB first vice president for marketing communications and consumer protection.

    The Freedom March mirrors the route taken by approximately 66,000 Filipino and 10,000 American prisoners of war. The path stretches from Mariveles and Saysain Point in Bagac, Bataan, to Camp O’Donnell in Capas, Tarlac. This historic route connects us to the past, turning each step into a tribute to our brave WWII heroes who shaped our national identity.

    To encourage broader participation, participants may choose to join specific segments of the march at their preferred starting points in any of the three provinces of Bataan, Pampanga, and Tarlac. This will allow individuals from different backgrounds to join in this act of remembrance. 

    “Every step taken in the Freedom March is a step of remembrance, gratitude, and commitment to ensuring that our heroes’ sacrifices are never forgotten,” Villa-Real added.
