DITO Home WOWFi — world’s first 5G RedCap WiFi for home

DITO Telecommunity, the fastest-growing telco provider in the country, introduces DITO Home WOWFi—the first 5G RedCap technology WiFi for home usage, powered by DITO’s Standalone, “true 5G” network.

In partnership with Huawei Technologies, one of the global leaders in 5G deployment, DITO is bringing its newest product to the market. This product unlocks the full potential of 5G, bringing fast internet speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to allow more Filipinos to enjoy the true 5G experience at an affordable cost.

Evelyn Jimenez, DITO chief revenue officer for consumer business, claims that the new DITO Home WOWFi is changing the norm and disrupting the market, enriching the lives of Filipino households with better internet options that suit their needs.

“In reality, the current internet options of Filipino households are quite limiting. You can get fast and unlimited Wi-Fi, but it won’t be cheap; you can get fast and affordable but not unlimited, and you can get affordable and unlimited, but it won’t be fast– this is the reality we live in. As the third telco committed to enhancing the lives of the Filipino people, we want to change the norm and disrupt the market by giving Filipinos the home internet they deserve– fast, unlimited, and affordable.”  Jimenez said.

“With DITO Home WOWFi, we want to jolt Filipinos out of their old ways of dealing with their internet at home; our goal is to give them a life-changing home Wi-Fi that lets them live big and never lets them down, especially in this age of digitalization and technological advancements,” Jimenez added.

5G RedCap Technology: The Future of IoT Application

5G RedCap is a new 5G standard and critical evolution of 5G originally called NR-Light, an important part of lightweight 5G. This kind of technology only operates on 5G Standalone (SA) networks, the “true 5G,” offering high capacity, maximum quality, and lower latency compared to 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) networks that rely on existing 4G infrastructures.

5G RedCap is a new addition to the 5G family, offering the right balance of 5G capabilities. It is the kind of technology that provides all the benefits of 5G, such as low latency, high peak data rate, and maximum capacity, without the need for high bandwidth,” said Huawei Technologies.

Globally, 5G RedCap is only being utilized for industrial use, but this time, here in the Philippines, DITO is bringing this technology straight to Filipino homes, allowing them to enjoy the full potential of 5G.  DITO is the sole telco operator in the country with a true 5G or 5G SA network to date; hence, it can deliver this emerging technology. DITO Home WOWFi is also the first in the world for home, driving the future for the Internet of Things (IoT) or smart home applications and supporting the growth of the digital economy.

Enjoy greater convenience, just plug and play!

One of the standout features of the DITO Home WOWFi is its ease of installation. Filipino households can enjoy its wireless broadband advantage, which is a big step up from wired connections, offering greater reliability and convenience versus fiber—there is no need for messy wires, just plug-and-play! Whether gearing up for remote work, online learning, or simply staying connected with family and friends, this device gets you online quickly.

This home WiFi is also suitable for underserved areas where wired connections are no longer feasible, bridging the digital divide and providing a quality home internet experience to remote areas.

Aside from going wireless, DITO Home WOWFi is also a prepaid service — no documents required, no monthly fees, and no lock-in period or long-term contracts. The Starter Kit is the most value-packed price in the market at PHP1,990 with complimentary unlimited 5G data and 50GB 4G data for 30 days.  The succeeding monthly load option is only at PHP790 for 30 days with UNLI 5G and bonus 50GB 4G data, which only applies to 4G covered areas.

Interested subscribers can conveniently purchase DITO Home WOWFi at DITO e-Shop, DITO Experience Stores, Device Retail Partners, Sales Blitzes, and DITO official stores in Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok

Philips EasyKey 9300 leads the smart home revolution in PH

Philips EasyKey, alongside leading real estate company Megaworld Corporation, is redefining smart security for Filipinos with the launch of Philips EasyKey 9300.

Digitalization has increasingly integrated itself into many facets of people’s lives—from devices to general electronics, and now homes. In the Philippines, around 12.2% of households indicated they have smart homes, a trend expected to increase to 22.8% by 2028.

Global trends show more people embracing the convenience of smart home technologies, automating lighting, climate control, and appliances. However, increased adoption brings security concerns, as more connected homes raise the risk of breaches, highlighting the need for better security measures.

This is why Philips EasyKey partnered with Megaworld and equipped their world-class properties with only the best-in-class smart locks, the Philips EasyKey 9300, with its intuitive and intelligent interface. The partnership aims to provide Filipino families with a comfortable, convenient, and safe high-quality life.

The Philips EasyKey 9300 features a fingerprint sensor on the handle, ensuring your finger naturally falls on it when touched. Upon detecting a recognized fingerprint, the door unlocks instantly. This system is encased in tempered glass, which is as durable and strong as an artificial diamond.

It also includes an auto-lock system that securely locks the door once it closes. If the door remains unlocked, an internal timer will notify residents to close it. This ensures effective home security, allowing you to leave and return with peace of mind.

Additionally, it lets residents control their lock with the Philips EasyKey app, regardless of their location. The app can also remotely unlock the door and includes a built-in alarm system that triggers if the lock is tampered with.

    Philips EasyKey

Holiday Escapes: How Filipinos travel, shop, and pay during the season

It’s the holiday season—at least for Filipinos—and with it comes a surge in holiday shopping, travel, get-togethers, and festive activities. With the season being a peak time for getaways, Filipinos prioritize experience-driven travel, with Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan being top destinations. Visa’s latest Green Shoots Radar survey reveals a significant shift in how Filipinos plan and pay for their travels, showing a growing preference for contactless payments alongside the continued use of cash.

    Traveling for new experiences, shopping

For Filipino travelers, the holiday season is an opportunity to explore new experiences and create lasting memories as travel peaks in December, with 32% of surveyed respondents planning domestic trips and 23% choosing international destinations.

The survey found that most Filipinos travel to relax (80%) and seek new experiences (43%). While sightseeing remains the top activity (82%), experiencing local cuisine and dining (67%) and shopping (67%) are also key priorities. This shows that Filipinos are looking for destinations that offer a blend of leisure, entertainment, and adventure.

Singapore, a long-time favorite, emerged as the top destination for Filipino travelers over the past 12 months, with 38% of respondents visiting the city-state. Singapore continues to draw Filipino tourists with its vibrant blend of urban attractions and rich cultural experiences. Its close proximity to the Philippines, ease of access, and wide range of activities makes it an ideal choice, especially during the holiday season.

Hong Kong remains a favorite at 31%, particularly for travelers who enjoy combining shopping with festive celebrations. Its expansive retail scene and diverse culinary offerings make it appealing to Filipino families seeking both luxury and bargain shopping experiences.

Japan, known for its picturesque landscapes, festive markets and shopping districts alongside its deep cultural heritage, is another popular destination, with 30% of Filipinos visiting to experience the Land of the Rising Sun.

As Filipinos head overseas, many are also drawn to the Philippines as a tourist destination. Inbound travel to the Philippines is also on the rise, with the country welcoming 3.66 million international visitors from January to August 2024—a 10.14% increase from the same period last year, according to the Department of Tourism. Additionally, data from the World Travel and Tourism Council’s 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR) forecasts that international and domestic tourism spending will reach P715.6 billion and P3.7 trillion, respectively, surpassing 2019 figures by 5.7% and 1.8%.

Jeff Navarro, country manager for Visa Philippines, said: “At Visa, we are committed to ensuring a seamless, secure, and convenient experience for Filipino travelers heading abroad and for inbound visitors to the Philippines. We recognize that tourism plays a vital role in the economy, contributing to job creation and overall growth. We’re working to support the Filipino government’s efforts to enhance tourism by improving digital payment methods and providing tourists with an enjoyable experience, which will help to further drive economic development and strengthen the tourism industry.”

Visa helps drive the growth of tourism in the Philippines by leveraging its global network and collaborating with local markets to promote the acceptance of Visa cards, creating a more enjoyable payments experience for tourists. In the Philippines, Visa supports small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) by providing tools and knowledge for cashless transactions such as the SME Online Toolkit. Post-COVID, Visa launched the POSM Visibility Initiative to enhance marketing materials in tourist hotspots. Additionally, Visa partnered with the Pacific Asia Travel Association to conduct finance and digital skills workshops for tourism SMEs and Department of Tourism officials, benefiting 120 participants across Southeast Asia including Laguna in the Philippines.

Shift in Payment Preferences: Contactless and Cash

A key trend emerging in Filipino travel habits is the shift toward contactless payments. In a survey commissioned by Visa done by YouGov in Aug 2024 reveals that 66% of Filipino travelers now prefer using contactless methods like mobile wallets and tap-to-pay cards, while 67% said they will likely get cards with contactless features.

“As cross-border travel continues to grow, Visa sees a tremendous opportunity to remain a key part of the traveler’s journey. The convenience and security of digital payment options give travelers greater confidence when making transactions abroad—whether they are booking accommodation, dining, or shopping. Our goal is to continue supporting travelers at every stage, from planning and booking to the entirety of their trip, by encouraging the use of Visa for a seamless, secure, and hassle-free payment experience,” Navarro added.

Despite the rise in contactless payments, 71% of holiday travelers still carry cash as a backup, particularly in areas where digital payment infrastructure may not be as widely available. The continued use of cash illustrates that there is some way to go towards full contactless payments,  especially for holiday destinations that have not fully shifted to cashless payments.

As the holiday season approaches, the preference for more experience-driven travel, combined with evolving payment methods, reflects the changing dynamics of how Filipinos shop, pay, and explore the world. Whether through cash or contactless payments, the essence of Filipino travel remains centered around creating memories and sharing moments with loved ones—values that are as enduring as the destinations themselves.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia 2024: Taj Izrin Aiman from Malaysia secures victory in a thrilling showdown

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) GT Cup Asia 2024 has culminated in a heart-pounding finale as 15 of the region’s top e-Motorsports racers faced off at the Connexion Conference and Event Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Racers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand competed in three exhilarating races on world-class circuits, all vying for the title of Asia Champion and the chance to represent the region in the TGR GT Cup Global Finals in Amsterdam in December.

Taj Izrin Aiman from Malaysia emerged as the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024 Individual Champion with a total of 65 points, securing a well-deserved victory following a series of dramatic races. In second place, Andika Rama from Indonesia, the returning 2023 Individual Champion, showcased relentless determination, finishing with 57 points. Fellow Indonesian, Moreno Pratama, in his first time placing in the Asia finals, claimed third on the podium with 48. The consistent performance from Rama and his fellow teammates also earned Indonesia the coveted Country Championship title.

The TGR GT Cup Asia 2024 competition, held on Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation5 (PS5) and PlayStation4 (PS4), saw a blend of strategic prowess, precision driving, and bold moves across three races. Fans were treated to an unforgettable showdown on iconic tracks like Sardegna Windmills, Nürburgring Grand Prix (GP), and Fuji International Speedway.

“The heart of Toyota, and GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia has always been about fostering a community of excellence rooted in our Japanese practice of Kaizen, or Continuous Improvement. In this fifth edition, it is inspiring to witness not only the ongoing enthusiasm from our drivers and supporters but also the technological advancements driven by e-Motorsports. We’re excited to contribute to this growth in the region as racers showcase exceptional talent and help shape the future of e-motorsports,” said Toyota Motor Asia (TMA) general manager Jaja Ishibashi. “A heartfelt congratulations to all the racers for their remarkable performance today, and all the best to Aiman and Rama as they advance to the Global Finals!”

TMA general manager for Vehicle Design Engineering Panat Leelavansuk shared, “From mastering iconic tracks that reflect real-world conditions to integrating insights from actual motorsports, the skill level on display from all participants is impressive. With the support of Razer’s headsets this year, racers were also able to communicate with their teams, exchanging tips and strategies. I’m thrilled to witness the passion and dedication of today’s youth, who are shaping the future of e-sports, as showcased in this year’s GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia. Congratulations to all the winners—your talent is setting new benchmarks for competitive gaming!”

Three Thrilling Races Define the 2024 Regional Finals

With five stunning livery designs representing each country, the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024 competition began with sunny weather on its first-ever rally track, the Sardegna Windmills circuit, where drivers took the wheel of the GR Yaris. Rama took the lead early on, only facing slight competition in the early laps before finishing as the winner of the first race. Throughout most of the race, the most intense action occurred mid-race, where drivers from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia battled it out. A close fight for all, the race ended with lap timings for all drivers separated by less than half a minute.

The second race at Nürburgring GP featured drivers in the GR Corolla Morizo Edition ’22, with a reverse grid for the top eight finishers from race one, placing the first race winner in eighth position, and so on. Pratama used this to his advantage – placing eighth in the first race, Pratama stayed within the top three positions throughout the circuit, eventually coming out on top as the second race’s winner. Malaysia’s team strategy also worked in their favor, with two of their driver’s taking up second and third position. Rain also came into play for this race, creating a challenging track that led to many position changes for several drivers.

The final showdown tested racers’ strategies to the limit with the technically challenging Fuji International Speedway, known for its tough last sector coming out into the straights. Driving on the GR010 Hybrid ’21, Pratama battled fiercely to take fourth place from Malaysia’s Iqbal Suji, with both drivers employing strategic offensive and defensive maneuvers. The Indonesian driver ultimately made his move, overtaking in the final laps of the race. This third race also saw a heavy amount of contact, with more than one racer spinning out and resulting penalties served. Opting for soft tires at the start, while many of his competitors chose mediums, Aiman maintained his lead and secured the win through a well-timed pit stop strategy.

“I’m truly at a loss for words. Although I faced technical difficulties and couldn’t finish the race last year, I’m overwhelmed with pride that my dedication and training have paid off, leading to a victory at the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024,” said an emotional Aiman. “I’m excited to continue training with Andika Rama as we prepare for the Global Cup in Amsterdam. A heartfelt thank you to Toyota Motor Asia for this incredible opportunity!”

“I’m honored to be representing Asia once again this year! Competing against Taj Aiman was an incredible challenge—he’s an exceptional competitor. I pushed myself to the limit, but his consistency and strategy across all three races were unmatched. I’m excited to have him as a teammate as we prepare for the Global Finals, and I can’t wait to make Asia proud,” said Andika Rama, representing Asia for the second time this year.

Special awards were also given for drivers’ exceptional performances, with Aiman cinching Driver of the Day, the Philippines’ Russel Reyes taking home Best Racecraft, and Rama winning Fastest Race Pace.

The TGR GT Cup Asia Finals 2024 welcomed Razer Inc. as its official headset partner. Racers were equipped with wired Razer BlackShark V2 X e-sports headsets, ensuring seamless, clear, and comfortable communication with their teams.

The championship was determined from cumulative points earned through finishing positions across all three races, the first five positions in qualifying rounds, and bonus points for the fastest laps. The top three individuals and teams each received a cash prize of USD8,000, USD4,500 and, USD3,000, respectively. With their victories secured, Aiman and Andika will represent Asia at the TGR GT Cup Global Finals on December 6 in Amsterdam, facing off against the world’s best e-Motorsports racers.

BPI urges public to stay alert against holiday cyber scams

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) reminds the public to remain vigilant as cybercrime remains a major concern in the Philippines. Don’t let the cyber grinch steal your Christmas. ‘Tis the season to shop with extra caution. Cybercrimes are expected to peak during the holiday period as online shopping surges.

“As the holiday season nears, it is important that consumers stay alert against the rising number of cyber scams. Cybercriminals ramp up scams during this festive season through fraudulent emails, fake websites, and other online threats. By staying informed and cautious, we can protect our personal and financial information from falling into the wrong hands,” said Jonathan Paz, BPI Enterprise information security and data protection officer.

    BPI

In 2023, global cybersecurity company Kaspersky warned Filipinos of typical phishing attacks during the holiday season. According to a survey by Statista, 8 in 10 Filipinos intend to shop during holiday sales, and 7 in 10 plan to shop both in physical and online shops. During the season, people often purchase apparel and footwear, consumer electronics, and children’s toys and games, but scammers try to take advantage of potential victims who are not on guard.

To avoid getting scammed this holiday period, BPI released several tips for the public to consider:

    1. Avoid using a public Wi-Fi connection when doing your online transactions.
    2. Do not accept help from any stranger when using ATMs.
    3. Never share your One-Time PIN (OTP) with anyone, even if they claim to be from your bank.
    4. Do not click on random links if you receive an email or text message, especially from an unknown sender.
    5. Before doing your online shopping, ensure that you are on a legitimate website. Scammers can create fake accounts of real companies.
    6. Apart from keeping your bank online accounts safe, use secure digital wallets, as they may be targeted by fraudsters.
    7. Do not put all your cards and IDs in just one wallet, as the risk is very high once it gets lost or stolen. Immediately block and report your account if this happens.

“BPI is committed to helping consumers be more vigilant against cyber-related crimes by promoting cyber hygiene, which refers to practices that build resilience against online attacks. We should always remember that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,” said Paz.

Annually, BPI invests significant resources for IT and cybersecurity systems and building best-in-class digital platforms, which forms part of its commitment to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity efforts, especially in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).

YouTube extends Shorts up to 3 minutes long, adds other new features

YouTube empowers content creators further with new additions to Shorts, its popular short-form video platform, that will help everyone create more dynamic, compelling, and engaging videos.

Chief among the new features is the extension of Shorts to up to three minutes long, a highly requested feature among creators. The longer format will be available starting October 15, granting you greater flexibility to express yourselves and share more immersive narratives.

    Other updates include:

Streamlined Player and Immersive Templates: The YouTube Shorts player has been refined to prioritize content, ensuring your work takes center stage. Additionally, the introduction of templates simplifies the creation process, letting you easily jump on the latest trends and add your unique spin.

Seamless Integration with YouTube: You can now leverage the vast universe of YouTube content directly from your Shorts camera. From there, you can easily access seamless remixing of clips from favorite videos, music videos, and more, offering unprecedented creative possibilities.

Enhanced Community Engagement: The new trends page on mobile helps you stay up-to-date with the latest trends, while comment previews provide a glimpse into conversations before diving in.

A More Personalized Experience: To cater to your individual preferences, YouTube is introducing the option to “Show fewer Shorts.” With this, you can customize your feed to prioritize long-form content or other interests.

With these welcome updates, YouTube Shorts looks to become an even more dynamic and engaging platform for both creators and fans alike.

Check these new features out on YouTube, and bookmark October 15 to start creating longer Shorts using the YouTube mobile app.
