Stronger together: The intertwined relationship between physical and mental health

In celebration of World Mental Health Day on October 10, an international day for raising awareness on mental health, LAC Philippines highlights the inseparable connection between physical and mental health. As we strive for a healthier life, it’s crucial to recognize that these two aspects of well-being are intricately intertwined.

The Mental Health Crisis in the Philippines

Mental health conditions are a global concern, affecting approximately one in eight people worldwide as reported by the World Health Organizations (WHO). In the Philippines, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO)  mental health illnesses rank third in terms of morbidity. Studies also indicate that stress, anxiety, and depression are prevalent mental health issues in the country. These statistics underscore the need to prioritize mental health and seek support when needed.

The Relationship of Mental Health and Physical Health

Mental health conditions can significantly impact physical health. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institute of Mental Health, individuals with mental health disorders are at a higher risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Moreover, NIMH also reported that stress, anxiety, and depression can weaken the immune system, making individuals more vulnerable to infections and illnesses.

Engaging in regular physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Additionally, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, stress management, and regular intake of supplements are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. These factors can contribute to both physical and mental well-being.

Taking the Holistic Approach to Health

A holistic approach to health, which encompasses physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being, is essential for optimal health outcomes. By addressing all aspects of our health, we can create a strong foundation for a fulfilling life.

In support of one’s holistic wellness journey, LAC Philippines offers a range of natural supplements that are designed to address specific needs. LAC MoodRx and LAC TriAction Sleep Formula are two examples of supplements from LAC that can contribute to overall mental health and well-being.

LAC MoodRx is a natural supplement formulated to support emotional balance and reduce stress. It contains a blend of mood-improving herbal extracts and nutrients that reduce stress, promote relaxation and serotonin production for improved memory and a boost of happiness. To further improve one’s mood and mental health, LAC also offers LAC TriAction Sleep Formula, designed to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. It is made with triple layer sleep technology to promote quality sleep from start to finish. It also improves one’s day-time productivity and mood balance, naturally.

“At LAC Philippines, we understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. That is why we are committed to providing natural solutions to support the holistic well-being of Filipinos. By addressing both aspects of health, we can empower individuals to live happier, healthier lives,” said Evelyn Teo, chief marketing officer of LAC Global.

By incorporating supplements such as LAC MoodRx and LAC TriAction Sleep Formula to your daily routine, you can provide your body with essential nutrients and support your overall well-being, along with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep. By prioritizing both mental and physical health, you can create a stronger and more resilient version of yourself.

Globe reiterates public warning against SMS spoofing, calls for increased vigilance

Globe renews its call for the public to exercise vigilance against SMS spoofing, a sophisticated scam tactic that has seen a resurgence in recent months, with fraudsters using names of reputable organizations to take advantage of customers’ trust.

Spoofing involves fraudsters impersonating legitimate SMS sender IDs, including Globe and other organizations, to trick recipients into believing that the messages are authentic. This technique has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in Metro Manila, despite the implementation of SIM registration last year aimed at curbing SMS fraud.

Customers have reported receiving spoofed messages that mimic Globe’s sender ID, enticing them with fraudulent links or else hooking them with claims of account problems. These deceptive messages aim to steal personal and sensitive information, which can grant scammers access to online accounts such as social media profiles, e-wallets, and bank accounts.

Globe is taking proactive steps to combat spoofing, including issuing public warnings, collaborating with industry partners and law enforcement agencies to apprehend scammers, and investing in advanced security measures to detect and block spoofed messages.

“Spoofing is a form of cybercrime that is becoming increasingly difficult to detect. We urge everyone to be extra cautious with any SMS that asks for personal information or prompts to click on a link. Globe will never send a clickable link in its official customer advisories,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.

Spoofing is a global concern, facilitated by the use of illegal devices known as International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catchers or fake cell towers. These devices can intercept mobile communications within a certain radius, allowing fraudsters to send messages with spoofed sender IDs that bypass network spam filters.

Globe urges the public to report any suspicious messages to its customer service channels and to follow these digital security best practices:

    • Never click on links from unknown sources.
    • Never share personal information via SMS.
    • Regularly update your knowledge on the latest scam tactics.
    • Be wary of unsolicited messages that offer deals that seem too good to be true.
    • Turn on spam filters on your phone, if feature is available.

By raising awareness and promoting collective vigilance, Globe aims to protect its customers and the public from these harmful practices.

For more information and updates on Globe’s efforts to combat spoofing, please visit Globe’s official website or its official Facebook page.

General Assembly 2024: Exploring the radiant beginning of Adamsonian Marketista and Omeyt’s new era

Annually, the Department of Management and Marketing holds a General Assembly to introduce the community to the role, functions, and services this department provides under Adamson University. In collaboration with the Adamson Junior Marketing Association and the Junior Management Association, both organizations worked alongside each other to create an effective program that will lead Vincentian Business students to an innovative future. Organizing the event has been a series of cumulative skills that were enriched from previous experiences leading to the successful production of the event.

On the day of the General Assembly, the officers worked together by preparing the necessary materials, ushers, booths, and supplementary tools to be the foundation of the event’s success. To open the event, Dr. Amy Daraway, the Chairperson of the Management and Marketing Department, welcomed the community and reminded the audience to take the pathway of Digital Advancement as it is now the core of decision-making, problem-solving, and foundation of the business world, especially as Marketing & Management students who will soon be the trailblazers of the business field. This led to the College of Business Administration’s Dean, Dr. Nayve who inspired the community to also make use of the opportunities provided by the department.

The event continued with Ms. Rizaldo and Ms. Ventura from the Library Department, who tackled the library’s features and services. The session has been incredibly helpful in teaching the students how to better navigate the library and find the resources they need, such as various learning materials available online and physically, simulation spaces for group huddles, and even services that students really would benefit from, such as printing & computer access.

In the next segment, Ms. Mondano, the Head of the Guidance Department, presented the guidance department’s role in providing support for students in terms of academic or personal situations as they offer counseling, career guidance, and a safe space for anyone seeking clarity, encouragement, or simply someone to talk to. To further enhance the knowledge of the students regarding the importance of student safety and welfare, the Director of the Office of Student Affairs, Atty. Navallasca highlighted crucial topics about maintaining a respectful environment, particularly focusing on the firm implementation of the Safe Spaces Act. Additionally, the office encouraged the students to only join recognized student organizations for the safety and future of the students.

The General Assembly introduced Marketistas (Marketing Students) and OMeyts (Operations Students) to the new faculty members, emphasizing their role and how they are responsible for the successful education and professional development of their students. Along with this is the presentation of the department’s goals and achievements for the academic year to inspire the marketing community to be active— may it be internal or external activities, to further strengthen and embody the virtues of a Vincentian Student Leader. It also became an opportunity for AdJMA and JMA presidents to encourage their fellow Klasmeyts to be part of the organization’s growing family and discover more of themselves through the never-ending possibilities of growth and advancement in joining the organization.

Throughout the event, the organization never failed to give their heartfelt thanks to the generous and precious sponsors of the event by giving away their products to the enthusiastic marketistas in a raffle draw and event awarding those who made an effort to dress themselves for the event. What made the General Assembly more evidently successful was the heartfelt joy of every participant who attended the event, their active participation throughout every speaker’s presentation, and the interactive booths operating during the event, inspiring the attendees to participate due to the enjoyable and enriching event.

HUAWEI WATCH D2: Health monitoring made better with PH’s first smartwatch with 24-hour ABPM

HUAWEI continues to push “health forward” as it unveils the HUAWEI WATCH D2, the latest edition of the HUAWEI WATCH D Series. This groundbreaking innovation is HUAWEI’s first smartwatch offering with Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM), providing users with faster and more accurate results than ever before.

Easy Blood Pressure Monitoring Wherever, Whenever, However

Hypertension is one of the most chronic diseases worldwide. The World Health Organization has claimed an estimated 1.28 billion adults aged 30 to 79 years old have hypertension. In the Philippines, recent studies have found a hypertension prevalence of 37% in Filipinos, with over half of hypertensive Filipinos unaware of their condition and only 27% having their condition under control. HUAWEI seeks to help users to manage their daily health as it unveils the HUAWEI WATCH D2 which now comes with an ABPM functionality, giving users a 24-hour assessment of their blood pressure levels that may help understand better the cause of fluctuations in users’ blood pressure levels. This feature helps users gain a clearer picture of their cardiovascular health.

Additionally, the watch was designed to be lightweight to make it easier for users to wear throughout the day, allowing for a more comprehensive blood pressure monitoring and management.

The HUAWEI WATCH D2 offers effortless and intelligent blood pressure tracking with just a raise of the wrist. The watch also supports scheduled alerts reminding users to check their blood pressure upon waking to help establish a daily blood pressure checking routine to ensure users can record peak blood pressure data promptly. The ABPM feature on the watch sets the interval between each blood pressure checking to 30 minutes, but users can also set the blood pressure measuring intervals from 15 to 60 minutes during waking and sleeping hours.

HUAWEI designed the watch to adapt to various scenarios, whether watch wearers are standing, which allows for ABPM; sitting, which allows for a more accurate single blood measurement; or lying down. This makes blood pressure checking with the HUAWEI WATCH D2 possible in a variety of real-life situations, from meetings to sleeping. It also ensures over 70% effective readings within 24 hours, delivering comprehensive blood pressure monitoring.

    Intelligent Health and Fitness Tracking

The HUAWEI WATCH D2 features the HUAWEI TruSense System, which allows the device to quickly deliver precise health and fitness monitoring. The watch delivers fast, accurate insights into users’ health, monitoring health metrics such as heart rate, blood pressure, and more. With its smart sleep monitoring feature, the watch tracks not only blood pressure levels but also other vital signs through the night to help identify potential health risks.

With one tap, users can generate a Health Glance report anytime, anywhere, receiving the results in as quick as 90 seconds. While this quick, convenient feature makes it faster and more affordable for users to stay on top of their health compared to a traditional check-up at the clinic, the watch is hugely considered a non-medical device and should not replace official diagnosis from medical professionals. The HUAWEI Health App also allows users to keep an eye on their loved ones’ health. They can now receive alerts for health indicators, which can help detect health risks early on.

    Designed for Comfort, Style Perfected

The HUAWEI WATCH D2 combines premium design with lightweight comfort, featuring a glossy mirror bezel, an elegant rotating crown, a sleek segmented body, and a seamless curved surface. Its vibrant screen displays stunning visuals, and its compact size makes it perfect for health monitoring on the go. Available in black and gold, it feats seamlessly into both formal and casual ensembles. Designed for all-day comfort, the watch comes with adjustable, sweat-resistant straps to suit a variety of wrist sizes, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit, even during workouts or in warm weather.

Smart, Convenient Lifestyle Right from Your Wrist

The HUAWEI WATCH D2 is packed with features to enhance both fitness and everyday life. With over 80 sport modes, the watch is ideal for fitness enthusiasts, offering accurate data to optimize every workout. Beyond fitness, it offers smart features that offer convenience such as Bluetooth calling, NFC-enabled door access, and compatibility with iOS and Android devices. By the end of 2024, HUAWEI also plans to introduce a smart e-wallet feature with the integration of the GCash payment feature on the watch.

With a battery life that lasts up to 6 days, the HUAWEI WATCH D2 is the ideal companion for users’ fitness and lifestyle needs.

PG-1 Films: Leave It All Behind — Yamaha Motor PH film competition

Yamaha Motor Philippines’ first-ever PG-1 Film Competition showcases a dynamic range of moto-explorations. Whether looking to find breathtaking landscapes or navigating unpaved directions outside the city, riding the PG-1 brings a sense of freedom and liberation. These two combined spark a feeling of exploring more, especially for filmmakers who are always up for new stories to tell. As the campaign says, ‘Leave it all behind, ‘ it enables the filmmakers to be free to craft their narrative, making the collaboration more exciting. The competition started in August, and now, in October, Yamaha is set to award the best film among the six entries exclusively at an outdoor cinema in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Do it for the plot or not at all — 6 filmmakers, 2 months of production, and 1 competition.

At its core, filmmaking is about storytelling, and motorcycle riding is often filled with a wide range of encounters with interesting people/cultures, as well as moments of personal reflection. Putting it together, Motorcycle Films allows riders to share their journeys, convey emotions, and explore less traveled roads to connect the experience to the audience.

Those who cannot resist leaving it all behind and answering the call for an open road were tapped by YMPH to be part of the competition. The official filmmakers are Motorcycle Cinema, Aaron Palabyab, El Clasico Moto, Moto Stories PH, Mel Cortez, and Joshua Chua. They were all challenged to create a short film (3 minutes and 30 seconds) and a movie poster that carried the theme of finding freedom and liberation with PG-1. All the entries must reflect the filmmaker’s take on the message: Leave it All Behind.

The six entries offered different narratives of one’s exploration; there is a bittersweet story about how we lose ourselves in our effort to make it in life, another story invites viewers to reflect on the choices they make in pursuit of happiness and true contentment, another entry even tackles about his heartfelt real-life story and on how he discovers authentic freedom lies not in escape, but in confronting his inner struggles first. Overall, this competition put a spotlight on how Filipino connects their love of filming and the liberating joy of riding a motorcycle.

The Film Awarding — An Outdoor Cinema Experience!

At the awarding event, it was set to complete the outdoor cinema experience. In the middle of the Bonifacio Global City, there’s the PG-1 Film Awarding, transforming the outdoor park into a complete explorer’s cinema ground. To make the awarding even more special, the new Yamaha Motor Philippines’ president Katsuya “Kyle” Iida was introduced to the media partners, motovloggers, film directors, photographers, and PG-1 owners.

The new chapter for Yamaha Motor Philippines started after its first-ever film competition. With six film entries, the top four films were named by YMPH together with the judges composed of prolific international TVC/Film directors and commercial photographers:

    • Explorers Choice Award: PADABA by Mel Cortez
    • Top Film Poster: THE LOST SPARK by Joshua Chua
    • Best Cinematography: BREAK FREE by Motorcycle Cinema
    • Best Film: PADABA by Mel Cortez

The best film awardee received more than a plaque: a PHP500,000 cash prize and accessories. Win or lose, the rest of the filmmakers will each receive a PG-1 motorcycle from the brand.

The film competition captured the essence of freedom only achieved with PG-1. It opened a new route of creative collaborations and endless possibilities of telling one’s exploration with Yamaha.

How to plan your travel budget alongside funds for other big goals

    0

As an adult, you may be looking forward to the first travel adventures you can fund on your own. Travel will give you a chance to disconnect from the mundanity of your routine and create meaningful experiences for yourself that will contribute to a richer and more fulfilling life. There may be few things more exciting to you than the chance to expose yourself to new places, people, and cultures and to develop a wider and more appreciative view of the world.

That said, there’s no denying how expensive travel can be, and doing so may be even more challenging if you have other financial goals you want to achieve. Fortunately, with the right saving techniques and mindset, you can adequately prepare for your travel expenses without having to dip into the savings of your other goals. Here are some helpful tips saving tips to help you build both your travel fund and your fund for other leisure activities:

    1. Create a Clear Budget for Each of Your Goals

Without a defined plan, it’s easy to overspend on one goal at the expense of another. That’s why it will be important to create a clear and organized budget for each of your financial targets. Doing so will help you allocate your income in a way that supports multiple priorities simultaneously.

Start by listing all of your financial goals, both short-term and long-term, and assign a specific amount for each one. Next, examine your income and current expenses to determine how much you can allocate toward each goal.

When creating a timeline for your financial targets—travel-related ones included—keep it realistic, as this will influence how much you need to set aside monthly. A well-thought-out budget will allow you to keep your finances balanced and under control and give you more leeway to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

2 Open a High-Interest Savings Account and Start Saving Early

Long before you start traveling or spending on leisure activities, like your gaming hobby or your favorite sport, open a high-interest savings account to make it easier to meet various financial goals. This type of account lets you earn more on your savings over time by allowing your money to grow with minimal effort on your part.

To maximize the benefits of this financial product, you should start saving early on so that you can accumulate more interest. It’s also ideal to open an account with a financial institution that has the best rates in order to reach your goals faster.

Maya Bank, for example, has different products that offer high interest savings Philippines’ consumers can take advantage of. The base rate of Maya Savings, for instance, is 3.5%, which is higher compared to what traditional brick-and-mortar banks have to offer. This interest rate can even be increased to 15% if you complete certain tasks that require you to use the bank’s other products.

Another service you can explore from Maya Bank is Personal Goals. Maya Personal Goals will allow you to accumulate a guaranteed 4% interest p.a. monthly, giving your savings for travel and other leisure activities a serious boost forward. Moreover, with Personal Goals, you can create up to 5 sub-accounts or “goal accounts” at a time. Try dedicating a sub-account for each of your financial targets, including your travel plans, to make it easier to allocate funds for each goal while keeping your finances on track.

    3. Maximize the Benefits That Come with Your Credit Card

Many credit card programs offer rewards that can be redeemed for travel-related expenses, such as flights, hotel stays, and tickets to top tourist attractions. As such, they can help you maximize your travel budget, especially when you use them wisely.

If you’re at the point where you can trust yourself with a credit card, use the perks and freebies that come with it to trim down your overall travel costs and potentially free up more for either future travels or your other financial goals.

For the best results, choose a card that aligns with your spending habits, lifestyle, or travel preferences. If you like flying with a certain airline, for example, sign up for one that gives free points or redeemable miles, which you can immediately use to cover the cost of your flights and achieve substantial savings as a result. And if your credit card comes with additional perks like VIP airport lounge access, all the better for your travel savings.

    4. Take Advantage of Travel Sales

Travel sales often present significant discounts on flights, accommodations, and vacation packages, and taking advantage of them is a great way to stretch your travel budget further. However, the best deals aren’t always offered every day. To properly capitalize on them, you’ll want to increase your chances of being notified about them.

Consider subscribing to newsletters from airlines, travel agencies, and booking websites, as many travel companies announce exclusive deals and flash sales to their subscribers. This way, you can get a head start on securing significant travel discounts before anyone else.

Don’t hesitate as well to use travel rewards or loyalty points in conjunction with sales whenever applicable. Combining a sale with rewards can lead to significant savings, making your travel dreams more attainable and your other goals more easily achievable.

    5. Make More Affordable Travel Choices

Lastly, the way you approach travel can significantly influence your overall costs. If you can focus on prioritizing budget-friendly options and being flexible in your decisions, you’ll be able to enjoy fulfilling experiences without overspending.

For instance, instead of booking a room at a pricey hotel, you can stay at an affordable rental. This way, you’ll have more money to spend on things and activities that will allow you to further appreciate the uniqueness of your destination.

Another good idea is to walk to nearby attractions and landmarks instead of taking a taxi or renting a car. Doing so will enable you to greatly reduce your transportation costs. You’ll be surprised at how cost-effective choices like these will pay off for your subsequent trips and other financial aspirations.

The more dreams you have in life on top of traveling the world, the harder it may seem to allocate funds for everything. But tips like these should help you improve your financial discipline and enjoy the rewards, both during an upcoming trip and in the far future.

85% of Filipino talent are either happy or neutral about their jobs vs pre-pandemic, according to Jobstreet by SEEK

According to the leading online job portal Jobstreet by SEEK’s Employee Job Happiness Index 2024,  85% of working Filipinos reported a positive or neutral response when asked about how satisfied they were with their current jobs, compared to 68% before the pandemic.

Aiming to identify the triggers that make a job enjoyable for Filipinos, the Employee Job Happiness Index 2024 surveyed over 900 respondents from various industries and specializations nationwide, asking them questions regarding their overall job satisfaction and experience in their respective companies.

When asked about how satisfied they were with their job, 85% of respondents shared a neutral or positive answer, which equals to an overall Happiness Index Score of 4.52 over a total of 7 points with 7 being the most positive. This is a much higher percentage than in Jobstreet by SEEK’s 2017 Job Happiness Index, with 68% of Filipino employees answering the same.

The respondents cited having work mobility, work-life balance, and an inclusive work setup as attributing factors to being satisfied with their current job.

    Jobstreet
85% of respondents gave a positive or neutral response when they were asked “how happy/satisfied are you with your present job?”

The report has also noted that talent who are currently working remotely or are under the work-from-home (WFH) setup showed better job satisfaction scores, with employees fully working remotely scoring 4.82 out of 7. The same employees cited a higher satisfaction when it comes to work-life balance, scoring 4.92. With the growing number of jobs offering a WFH arrangement, this has positively impacted the country’s overall Job Satisfaction score.

Meanwhile, when it comes to job satisfaction among Filipinos in different parts of the country, employees from the National Capital Region (NCR) scored the lowest at 4.46, which can be attributed to the region’s high traffic congestion and difficult mobility, leading to a stressful commute for employees going to work, and in turn, affecting their overall job satisfaction. Workers from Mindanao, on the other hand, were most likely to be satisfied with their careers, scoring an average of 4.59.

Among Filipino talent of different generations, Gen Z was the least likely to be satisfied with their current jobs, scoring a 4.28 in the Happiness Index Score for those between the ages of 23 and 27. This may be inferred from a widening gap of perceptions when it comes to work culture and work-life balance among younger and older colleagues.

Interestingly, employees who are married or partnered reported higher levels of job satisfaction, scoring 4.60 in comparison to single employees who scored 4.46, which may be attributed to employees having found a good work-life balance in handling their personal relationships with their careers.

Overall, the survey revealed that Filipino workers are happier in their jobs when they are given the appropriate work arrangement and opportunity to develop and be promoted by their employers. The said report also identified career development and verticality as the main contributors to happiness at work among the respondents, followed by training opportunities and salary.

Evidently, the survey revealed that those who work remotely are most likely to be satisfied with their jobs, revealing how the pandemic also affected perceptions about work and normalized the work-from-home setup.

“Our survey shows that Filipino candidates nowadays weigh multiple factors in determining their happiness and satisfaction with their jobs. As a talent partner, Jobstreet by SEEK encourages hirers to take these into consideration and provide a conducive, satisfying work environment that not only benefits current employees but also potential candidates to improve employee morale and traction,” shared Dannah Majarocon, managing director of Jobstreet by SEEK in the Philippines.

Jobstreet by SEEK, as a leading career-seeking platform, remains steadfast in providing future and current employees the opportunity to be guided in their career paths, as well as provide insights on employment for both companies and the public sector to consider when it comes to employee well-being and development.
