In the province of Tuguegarao, where farming is one of the main sources of livelihood among residents, 36-year-old Maureen Ann Blancad has transformed her life as a farmer and her community through the power of technology. Once a traditional farmer, Maureen has turned to vlogging to share her journey and knowledge with her followers online. Her story is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of women in agriculture, especially in the face of adversity.
Maureen’s journey into farming began under challenging circumstances. “I started farming when my husband had an accident and couldn’t work. There was no one else to tend to our land, so I took over,” she recalled. Despite the initial struggles, including learning how to plow and manage the farm, Maureen persevered. “With my husband’s guidance, I learned the ropes. It was tough, but I had to stay positive for my family.”
Maureen’s farming skills received a substantial boost when she joined the Scaling Up Sustainability Project, an initiative led by the Philippines Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture (PPSA) in collaboration with PLDT Inc. (PLDT), and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart). With funding support through a GlobalGiving grant in partnership with Corteva, this project aims to train 100 Filipino farmers on climate-smart practices and entrepreneurship, to enhance productivity and resilience.
The project unfolds in two phases: Phase 1 focuses on mentorship, and Phase 2 focuses on cascading. The mentorship activities allow women farmer champions to interact with key experts from PPSA’s network to build the farmers’ individual expertise on a chosen topic and, at the same time, help build the skills, tools, and materials needed for cascading activities. Phase 2 also consists of cascading activities of the farmers through organized training sessions where farmer champions will serve as resource persons.
The project introduced Maureen to various digital tools and technologies that revolutionized her farming practices. “Technology has made a big difference. From online marketing to modern farming techniques, I’ve learned so much,” she said. One of the significant changes was the use of social media to market her produce. “Thanks to social media, we can sell our products faster and reach more customers. Sometimes, our harvests are sold out even before we bring them to the market.”
Maureen’s success as a farmer and vlogger has not only improved her family’s livelihood but also inspired her community. She is currently undergoing a three-month mentorship program on digital entrepreneurship facilitated by PLDT and Smart and on water management, drip irrigation for corn and vegetables facilitated by Harbest Agribusiness Corporation so that she can teach other farmers and encourage them to embrace technology. “It’s a big responsibility, but I want to help other farmers learn about modern farming and how to use social media for marketing,” she explained. Her vlogs, which cover various farming activities and techniques, have become a valuable resource for many. “It also helps that Smart’s signal is strong in our area, we have an easy time uploading my videos.”
Balancing her roles as a farmer, vlogger, and mother of three, Maureen emphasized the importance of time management. “It’s all about balancing your responsibilities. My children help on the farm when they are not in school, mostly during the summer. It’s a family effort,” she said with a smile.
The Scaling Up Sustainability Project has been instrumental in Maureen’s journey. PLDT and Smart’s support for this program is an extension of their commitment to digital inclusion through the Digital Farmers Program, implemented in partnership with the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute. By integrating digital entrepreneurship training into this initiative, PLDT and Smart are equipping farmers with the knowledge and tools to maximize technology to increase farmers’ productivity and resilience. “The training has changed my life,” Maureen said.
Looking ahead, Maureen dreams of turning her farm into a farm school to share her knowledge with more farmers. “I hope to get approval for our farm school. It’s my way of giving back to the community,” she said. Her message to fellow farmers is clear: “Don’t be afraid to embrace new technologies. They can help increase your yield, reduce costs, and make farming more manageable.”
Maureen’s story is a shining example of how technology can empower women in agriculture, transforming their lives and communities, and making a difference, one field at a time.

Coursera, a leading online learning platform, has released its ‘Closing the Gender Gap in GenAI Skills’ playbook, a new resource aimed at addressing the gender gap in Generative AI (GenAI) skills. The playbook explores actionable strategies to empower more women to harness GenAI, highlighting the critical need for continued efforts to build a more inclusive and equitable AI landscape.
The Philippines is leading GenAI adoption in Southeast Asia, yet women remain underrepresented in this fast-growing field. Coursera data shows that while the country has the highest share of women in GenAI enrollments in the region and ranks among the top 10 globally, women still make up only 38% of GenAI enrollments – despite accounting for 51% of all learners in the country. Globally, women account for 32% of GenAI enrollments on Coursera. The growing interest in AI skills across the Philippines presents a strong opportunity to bridge the gender gap. In 2024, Filipino learners recorded the highest growth in GenAI enrollments in Southeast Asia, with women’s enrollments soaring 818%, surpassing the 765% growth among men.
The Philippines has better gender parity in learning than the global average, but this disparity in GenAI enrollments underscores the need for targeted interventions to ensure equitable access to GenAI opportunities and enable more women to lead in the AI-driven era. Encouraging more women to participate in AI will not only drive inclusivity but also ensure that diverse perspectives contribute to the development and application of this transformative technology.
Coursera’s playbook highlights key barriers limiting women’s participation in GenAI, along with strategies to bridge the gap, including:
Confidence gaps reduce persistence: Women often hesitate to engage in GenAI courses due to self-doubt, even when they have the skills. On Coursera, they are six times more likely to enroll in beginner-level courses than intermediate ones, favoring structured and accessible entry-points. However, Filipino women are breaking this mold, where Coursera data reveals that the top 5 GenAI courses are identical for both men and women. This signals a positive start towards narrowing the divide between men and women in this field.
Limited time and unclear guidelines hinder skill adoption: Many women cite “lack of time” as their top reason for discontinuing STEM courses, reflecting the reality of balancing caregiving and work responsibilities. A BCG report shows that only 50% of women in the Philippines are exposed to technology before university, underscoring the need for early access to STEM education and clearer career pathways to bridge the gender gap in AI adoption.
Perceived lack of relevance: Many women hesitate to upskill in GenAI due to uncertainty about its real-world applications. They engage more when GenAI is linked to practical fields like healthcare, education, and creative industries. Real-world case studies, interdisciplinary AI courses, and applied learning programs can make AI more accessible and career-aligned. Globally, women use Coursera Coach 11% more than men, benefiting from guided AI learning and personalized recommendations.
Lack of female role models limits engagement and retention: Fewer women in AI leadership and education discourage participation. Oxford Academy research shows that more female STEM teachers in high school increases the likelihood of women graduating with STEM degrees. Coursera data reveals that STEM courses with at least one female instructor attract 7% higher female enrollment on average. Increasing women educators, AI mentors, and industry role models will be key to sustaining long-term engagement in GenAI careers.

CERTIFICATION PROCESS
The certification process can be accomplished in four (4) steps: Pre-qualification, Inspection, Rectification and Certification.
All customers looking to sell their Honda vehicles (with a maximum age of 10 years or a total mileage of 100,000 km), regardless of irregular or missed service visits, may take advantage of the pre-qualifying assessment. After the inspection, HCPI-trained qualified QCI technicians will provide the inspection results and discuss service recommendations. The Junior Marketing Association of the Philippines of Laguna State Polytechnic University – San Pablo City Campus (JMAP | LSPU – SPCC) successfully held its 1st annual webinar, “Voice of Success: Empowering Your Marketing Journey through Alumni Stories,” on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Epson Philippines, in collaboration with the Haribon Foundation, recently conducted a coastal cleanup at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP), reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.
“At Epson, sustainability is more than just a corporate goal, it’s a responsibility we take seriously,” said Masako Kusama, president and director of Epson Philippines. “This cleanup initiative reflects our dedication to protecting the environment and inspiring others to take action for a better future.”
The coastal cleanup focused on addressing pollution in Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park, a 175-hectare protected area that serves as one of the last mangrove refuges in Manila Bay. The park is home to over 54 bird species, both native and migratory, and plays a vital role in maintaining biodiversity in the region. However, waste accumulation threatens this delicate ecosystem, making conservation efforts critical.
Volunteers from Epson and Haribon worked together to collect 133 sacks of waste, weighing a total of 697 kilograms. Among the debris removed were Styrofoam (42 sacks, 82 kg), glass and metal (5 sacks, 50kg), PET bottles (41 sacks, 123kg), rubber materials (19 sacks, 228kg), cloth waste (6 sacks, 72kg), and soft plastics (20 sacks, 140kg). This effort not only reduced pollutants but also underscored the urgent need for sustained action to protect natural habitats.

Collaborating for Change
The Haribon Foundation, one of the Philippines’ leading environmental organizations, has long been dedicated to conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable practices. Known for its expertise in habitat restoration and community engagement, Haribon actively partners with companies and institutions to address pressing ecological challenges. For this coastal cleanup, Haribon provided technical guidance, clean-up materials, and site management support, ensuring the activity was both impactful and safe for volunteers.
As part of its Human Resources plans for 2025, Epson sought to organize an employee engagement activity aligned with its sustainability initiatives. The partnership with Haribon was a natural fit, given their shared vision of preserving critical ecosystems and fostering environmental awareness.
“We specifically wanted a coastal cleanup because it directly addresses one of the most visible and urgent environmental issues today,” Kusama explained. “Partnering with Haribon allowed us to make a meaningful impact—not only by preserving the wetland park but also by encouraging our employees to actively participate in sustainable practices.”
