The Aakash, a government subsidized tablet for the masses in India has proven to be a hit with customers. An AFP report says that the device currently has 1.4 million bookings since it was put up for sale two weeks ago in India. The device, which is currently priced at 2,500 (around $50) rupees is the world’s cheapest, and is a far cry from the normal asking price of tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Apple iPad, which usually start at $500-$600 (Php 22,000 to Php 26,300). And while the 7-inch Aakash doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that newer tablets have (basic WiFi connectivity and it only has about 180 minutes of battery life and is powered by Android 2.2), it costs a mere Php 2,050.
