Two Filipino teams joined the first-ever M1 Mobile Legends World Championship held last week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Sunsparks and Onic Philippines fought it with some of the world’s best Mobile Legends players for a shot at the USD 250,000 (more than PHP 12 million) prize pool the chance the call themselves the first-ever Mobile Legends world champions.
Out of the two teams, it was only Bren Esport’s Sunsparks who escaped the group stage with their 2-1 victories over their three group opponents. The six points earned them the second seed out of group C and straight on the lower bracket of the tournament.
Onic Philippines, on the other hand, weren’t so lucky, the Pinoy squad bombed out of groups following two quick 0-2 against Indonesia’s Evos Legends and Japan’s 10second Gaming+. The pinoys would salvage their tournament with a 2-1 win against Russia’s Deus Volt to finish in 9th to 12th place and take home USD 4,000 or more than PHP 200,000.
During the main stage, Sunsparks showed why they were the reigning MPL-Philippines champions sweeping round one opponent Vietnam’s VEC Fantasy Main. But their run ended in the next round following a 1-2 defeat against Myanmar’s Burmese Ghouls. The pinoys would end the tournament in 5th to 6th place winning USD 8,000 (more than PHP 400,000) in the process.
