The new portable SSD offers capacities up to 8TB, broad device compatibility, and durability testing for mobile workflows.
Samsung Electronics has unveiled the P7 Portable SSD, a next-generation external storage device built around USB4 connectivity and designed for users dealing with increasingly large files from ultra-high-resolution video, AI content, and modern games.
Introduced at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany, the P7 delivers transfer speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and will be available in capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB. Samsung is positioning it for both professional and everyday use, including storage-heavy workflows that demand faster file transfers and backup.
USB4 for faster portable storage
At the center of the P7 is USB4, which allows the drive to reach speeds of up to 4,000MB/s.
Samsung says the higher bandwidth is intended to support demanding use cases such as ultra-high-resolution content creation, large-scale games, and other workflows that involve moving significant amounts of data. The release also highlights support for demanding applications including 12K direct recording.
“As AI-powered content creation and ultra-high-resolution video make large amounts of data part of everyday life, users increasingly expect faster and more reliable storage experiences,” said Tommy Kwon, vice president and head of Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics.
“With fast file storage and backup, the P Series is designed to provide professionals and everyday users alike with the performance they need to work efficiently across a wide range of applications.”
Broad compatibility across devices
The P7 is designed to work across a wide range of host devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and cameras.
That broader compatibility makes the drive suitable for users who regularly move files across multiple devices rather than keeping storage tied to a single computer.
Samsung has also subjected the P7 to 2-meter drop testing as well as shock and vibration durability testing. These measures are intended to improve confidence when the drive is used while traveling, working outdoors, or moving between locations.
Up to 8TB of portable storage
The Samsung P7 SSD will be offered in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities.
Samsung describes the 8TB version as the world’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD with speeds of up to 4,000MB/s. As with other market-first claims, that distinction is based on Samsung’s own positioning and is best treated as a manufacturer claim unless independently verified.
The global rollout began on August 31, while Philippine availability is scheduled for early November through Samsung’s official stores on Lazada and Shopee.
