The 2014 Palarong Pambansa recently drew to a close with 23 new records set in both swimming and athletic events—the highest number of records since its 2010 run.
From thousands of young competitors, only one PLDT HOME Best Athlete per sporting category was chosen by the Palarong Pambansa committee, together with PLDT HOME DSL. There were a total of 25 awardees of the PLDT HOME DSL Best Athlete title, including runner Jomar Udtohan from San Sebastian College, who stunned the audience as he set new records in the secondary boys’ century dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter run, and 4×100 and 4×400 team relays, winning gold medals in the process.
The National Capital Region Athletic Association was hailed as overall champion garnering 107 gold, 54 silver, and 56 bronze medals. Region IV-A CALABARZON hit the second spot and had 38 gold, 51 silver, and 51 bronze medals.
The closing ceremonies was attended by several representatives from the government, including Laguna governor “Jorge” E.R. Ejercito Estregan, DepEd USEC Bro. Armin Luistro, DepEd ASEC Tonisito “Toni” Umali, and Pagsanjan Mayor Maita Ejercito.
As the official technology partner of the country’s largest multi-sport event, PLDT HOME DSL enabled the sports-loving public to view the competitions live in SM Malls in Laguna.
PLDT vice president and head of HOME Broadband Gary Dujali says that PLDT HOME DSL recognizes the significant role of youth development and the Filipino society as they continue to take part in programs that share the same stand they believe in.
Dujali added, “PLDT HOME DSL is dedicated to encouraging young athletes to push their limits to excellence, with the support of their families and loved ones. Sports has always been and will continue to be our advocacy, and we are very happy to have partnered with the city of Laguna to level up this year’s Palarong Pambansa.”
