image001Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) recently broke new ground as it successfully conducted the country’s first successful video multicast of a live event over LTE connection.

In an exclusive preview to journalists, Smart transmitted the live feed of a performing band during the 7107 Internation Music Festival directly to tablets over LTE, the fastest commercially available wireless broadband coverage for mobile devices.

Called the evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS), the emerging technology makes use of the functionality and speed of LTE to deliver rich multimedia content to a large number of consumers efficiently. The content is transmitted wirelessly by LTE-capable cell stations to mobile devices.

When fully developed, the innovation will allow people to watch clear, lag-free video content – whether live or on-demand – on their smartphones and tablets wherever they are, whenever they want.

“Smart has always been at the forefront of innovations in the mobile industry, keeping Filipinos abreast with the latest technology. This successful preview shows Smart’s readiness in providing consumers with the next big thing in wireless services,” said Ma. Hiyasmin Quiñal, Smart Center Head for Wireless Access and Transport Operations in Luzon.

“As the forerunner of LTE technology in the country, Smart is proud to break new ground for this new technology, which not only extends the capabilities of LTE infrastructure but also opens up a wide array of possibilities for us to serve our consumers,” added Smart and PLDT Technology Group Head Roland Peña.
