Rakuten Viber has launched Unread Recap, a new ChatGPT-powered feature designed to help users catch up on missed conversations more quickly.
Instead of scrolling through long message threads, users can open the app and receive a summary of unread chats. From there, they can mark a conversation as read, leave it for later, or open the chat directly.
BUILT FOR BUSY CHAT LISTS
Viber says nearly a third of its users have 20 or more unread messages on any given day, making missed conversations a common part of the messaging experience.
Unread Recap is designed to reduce that backlog to a shorter summary, giving users a faster way to understand what happened before deciding whether to respond or revisit the full conversation.
CHATGPT POWERS THE SUMMARY
ChatGPT generates the recap as part of Rakuten Viber’s wider collaboration with OpenAI.
When a user requests a recap, the system processes the unread messages needed to generate the summary. Viber says this gives users enough context to understand a conversation without reading every message first.
PRIVACY SAFEGUARDS APPLY
Rakuten Viber says the feature limits the information used for the recap to unread messages and participants’ names required to generate the summary.
No other chat content is included in the request, with the privacy design intended to keep the feature focused only on the unread portion of the conversation being summarized.
NOW AVAILABLE GLOBALLY
Unread Recap has rolled out globally on the Viber mobile app.
The feature forms part of Rakuten Viber’s broader use of AI to simplify everyday tasks inside the app. It also supports Rakuten Group’s “Triple 20” initiative, which focuses on using AI to improve service efficiency and user experience.
