Mini-lab: REDFOX Wizpad Scribe 8 inch

I have always said that the perfect size for a tablet packs a screen that hovers around the 8-inch mark. It is the perfect balance between portability and usability, and fits neatly into a bag without much trouble. We’ve been given a unique chance to review the latest such device from REDFOX, the Wizpad Scribe, and in the few minutes we have had so far, we’re liking what we’re seeing.

I’m not going to bore you with specs, so for those who are interested, the Wizpad comes with an Intel Atom Baytrail Z737D processor running at 1.33GHz. It is paired with 2GB of RAM, and the aforementioned 8-inch screen with an adequate 800×1280 resolution. It delivers great, lag-free performance, even while multi-tasking. I’m actually writing this with a browser open in the background, streaming a full-HD movie on YouTube.

The performance of the device is remarkable, but what really makes the Wizpad stand out, at least based on this quick review, is the inclusion of two full-sized USB ports on the device, one of which is ISB 3.0. You can finally leave the OTG cable at home!

Those of you who are concerned about how their gear looks needn’t fret. It’s a handsome tablet. It carries a design that’s very clearly Microsoft, and borrows a lot of styling cues from other Windows devices, most notably the Lumia line of mobile phones. You don’t need more than one glance to tell that it’s a Windows device.

The icing on top of the cake is the inclusion of a surprisingly-accurate, pressure sensitive stylus that very faithfully records the intensity of pen stroked. It might not be a dedicated drawing tablet, but sketches, notes and scribbles should pose no problem for this handy little device. Not bad for a tab’ et that comes in at less than 16,000 for the basic Wi-Fi only model.

We’re going to spend a little more time this little guy throughout the course of the day, and we’ll get back to you with more findings. Stay tuned!
