Coming back to the forefront of economic conversations is Econvergence, the country’s premier annual inter-high school economics convention hosted by the UPLB Economics Society. With this year’s theme—“ENERGIZING TOMORROW: Unveiling the Energy Crisis and Its Implications for Philippine Economic Development,” the Econvergence 2025 is geared up to address issues that delve into the intricacies of the country’s energy sector and its challenges in efficiency and sustainability. It is set on January 25-26 at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.
Powered by the goal to provide a platform to attainable economics education, it highlights the participation of the youth in meaningful and critical discourse through a set of intellectual competitions. These hearken to the calls of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal No. 7, “Affordable and Clean Energy,” and dissect the nation’s crisis in energy accessibility, sustainability, and its impacts on the environment. Through this, the event aims to reach reliable and strategic solutions for economic progress.
Now hosting its 20th run, around 200 participants from 21 High Schools across the whole country will be competing in this year’s set of contests, including Philippine Science High School – Main Campus, which has been the overall winner for six years consecutively. The categories include: Ekonomika Quiz Contest, Economics Teachers Convention, Poster-Making, Impromptu Speaking, Intellectual Encounter Debate, Essay-Writing, Mini Documentary Presentation, and Photo Essay. Winners from sub-events will receive medals, while overall winners will be awarded trophies and cash prizes.
The success of the event is consistently sustained by experts, establishments, and national institutions since its commencement. For this year, Econvergence is powered by Aboitiz Power Corporation and is co-presented by Project Padayon. It is in partnership with various organizations and local establishments and is regularly endorsed by major economic institutions including Pthe hilippine Economic Society, Junior Philippine Economic Society, the National Economic and Development Authority, the Philippine Competition Commission, and the Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance.
