Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation is preparing to expand its local manufacturing operations as part of a broader growth strategy centered on investment, future mobility, and the Philippine automotive industry.
Among its key initiatives are a previously announced PHP7-billion investment, planned participation in the government’s Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy, or EVIS, and the addition of hybrid electric vehicle production to its Philippine manufacturing portfolio. Mitsubishi Motors identifies ASEAN as a core growth region, with the Philippines among its priority markets.
“MMPC has always taken a long-term view of the Philippines. We see significant opportunities to strengthen local manufacturing, introduce new technologies, and help shape the next chapter of the country’s automotive industry,” said Noriaki Hirakata, chairman of Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation.
Hybrid production to expand local manufacturing
MMPC’s planned participation in EVIS is expected to support the addition of hybrid electric vehicle production to its local operations. The company said this would expand its manufacturing portfolio while supporting the government’s goal of strengthening the competitiveness of the Philippine automotive industry.
“Hybrid electric vehicles represent a practical next step for the Philippine market. By expanding our local manufacturing portfolio, we are broadening mobility choices for our customers while supporting the country’s ambition to strengthen its automotive manufacturing capabilities,” Hirakata said.
Building a broader automotive ecosystem
Beyond vehicle production, MMPC said it continues to invest in its workforce, deepen partnerships with local suppliers, and improve the competitiveness of its operations. These efforts are positioned as part of a wider strategy to strengthen the local automotive ecosystem rather than simply expand assembly capacity.
“Our ambition extends beyond manufacturing vehicles. We want to help position the Philippines for the future by contributing to a more competitive, innovative, and resilient automotive industry. We believe that is the enduring contribution MMPC can make to the country,” Hirakata added.
Six decades of local manufacturing
MMPC has operated in the Philippines since 1963 and currently runs a 23-hectare manufacturing facility in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. The plant has an annual production capacity of 50,000 units and presently manufactures the Mirage G4 and L300.
The planned addition of hybrid production would broaden that locally assembled lineup and mark another step in MMPC’s transition toward electrified mobility in the Philippine market.
