A group of researchers from University of Michigan designed a feature attached to cars that prohibits people under the influence of alcohol to drive. This feature includes an in-built blood alcohol level tester. The group had been testing the impact of these “alcohol ignition interlock devices” in vehicles.
According to their study, “85 per cent of crashes that result in death can be avoided and 1.25 million non-fatal injuries can be prevented by this technology”.
“Our analysis demonstrates the significant public health benefit and societal cost savings associated with including alcohol ignition interlock devices as standard equipment in all new cars,” said Patrick Carter from University of Michigan.
