The long wait is over and cat is finally out of the bag, as Toyota Motor Philippines launched their second-generation 7-seater SUV to Philippine media. This all-new model replaces the previous model that has been breaking sales records since it was launched a decade ago.

“Our concept was to build a true SUV that has style and confidence,” said Hiroki Nakajima, executive chief engineer of the all-new Fortuner. “The all-new Fortuner is the outcome of our continuous efforts to redefine toughness,” he added.

Aside from the edgier exterior, the Fortuner is now longer and wider, and features a more comfortable interior. Upgrades include new engines, new six-speed automatic transmissions, and better safety features. Like the previous generation, the all-new Fortuner will be available in four variants with the 4×2 drivetrain, and one variant for 4×4, with a special color option for the V variants.

Toyota’s new GD diesel engines replace the KD line that powered the older models. The new 2.4-liter variants are fitted with the 2GD-FTV, a 16-valve DOHC, straight-4 CRDI with variable geometry turbocharger, intercooler, and VVT-i. This produces 151 PS @ 3400RPM, and maximum torque of 400 NM @ 1600-2000RPM. The top of the line 2.8-liter variant is powered by the 1GD-FTV, a 16-valve DOHC, straight-4 CRDI with variable geometry turbocharger, and intercooler. This displacement makes 180 PS @ 3400RPM, and maximum torque of 450 NM. The lone gasoline engine is a 2TR-FE, a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC, Dual VVT-I powerplant that puts out 166 PS @ 5200RPM, and maximum torque of 245 NM @ 4000RPM.

Suspension is courtesy of double wishbones with stabilizer fronts, and 4-link with coil springs with stabilizer rears. Stopping power is taken care of by vented discs in front and drums at the rear. G models come with 17-inch wheels, while the V models are fitted with 18s.

In-car Entertainment is controlled by a 6.5-inch capacitive screen with DVD/CD/Tuner/Aux/USB/iPod/Bluetooth connectivity call functions and audio streaming. The system is wired to six speakers distributed inside the cabin. Safety features include ABS with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, disc brakes, the new hill-start assist control, trailer sway control, vehicle stability control, and up to seven airbags.

The all-new Fortuner is available in super white; silver metallic; attitude black mica; gray metallic; white pearl; phantom brown metallic, and avant-garde bronze metallic. Toyota dealerships are now accepting pre-orders with deliveries to commence in March.
