Leading cybersecurity firm Trend Micro hosted DECODE 2024, its free-for-all cybersecurity firm. Now on its 8th year, the event was held last September 10 at the EDSA Shangri-Hotel. Local IT and cybersecurity professionals came together for a full day of networking, talks, panel discussions, and hands-on activities that highlighted how fusing technologies will aid in pushing forward toward a more resilient and secure future.

Led by VicOne, a Trend Micro subsidiary focused on automotive cybersecurity solutions, DECODE’s first-ever session on vehicle security was jam-packed with eager attendees. This session raised attendees’ awareness of potential cybercriminal activity involving electric vehicles (EVs) by demonstrating how a car could get hacked via its infotainment and radio frequency systems.
The panel discussion held in the afternoon featured global cybersecurity experts from Trend Micro and its partner law enforcement agencies, Robert McArdle (Director of Forward-Looking Threat Research, Trend Micro), Ivo De Carvalho Peixinho (Head of Cybercrime Intelligence Unit, Interpol), Ritu Gill (Open-Source Intelligence Analyst and Co-Founder, Forensic OSINT), and Ryan Flores (Senior Manager of Forward-Looking Threat Research, Trend Micro APAC). The panel discussed the latest trends and cybercrimes led by generative AI and deep fakes, the value of educating children and raising consumer awareness for cybersecurity, and how organizations big and small can best protect themselves from data breaches and cyber-attacks.
To wrap up the day’s events, Flores ended his locknote with the message, “AI can accelerate all kinds of things, but learning, understanding, and being creative are the things that differentiate you from AI,” He then implored attendees to take all that they learned throughout the day and use it to “help improve the systems of their respective companies and build things that are secure, ethical, and for the common good.”

MPCALA Holdings Inc., the concessionaire of the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX), announced that the CALAX Governor’s Drive Interchange has reached its 25% completion milestone. The interchange, slated to open by the first quarter of 2025, is expected to decongest traffic on major roads in Cavite, specifically Aguinaldo Highway in Silang, and help spur economic activities for the cities and municipalities along the alignment in the province of Cavite.
Spanning 7.8 km from the Silang (Aguinaldo) Interchange to Governor’s Drive, this segment will be the longest operational section of CALAX by the first quarter of 2025, while the two remaining segments are still under construction. Currently, ongoing work includes excavation works, bridge and drainage construction, and installation of fences.
Raul Ignacio, president and general manager of MPCALA Holdings Inc., acknowledged construction challenges by the recent typhoons but affirmed the company’s commitment to deliver this vital segment within schedule.
“Despite the challenges faced in construction brought about by the recent typhoons, we are pressing forward to ensure the timely delivery of the Governor’s Drive Interchange. Once operational, this vital infrastructure will ease traffic congestion, provide a faster route for thousands of motorists, and stimulate economic growth across Cavite and CALABARZON.” Ignacio stated.
In addition to the Governor’s Drive Interchange, two other major segments of CALAX, Subsection 2 (Open Canal Interchange) and Subsection 1 (Kawit Interchange), are progressing steadily, with 15% and 25% completion, respectively. Both segments are expected to open by the third quarter of 2025 and will eventually connect CALAX to the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) via the CAVITEX-CALAX Link. Currently, the overall completion rate of the entire CALAX project stands at 64%.
At present, CALAX serves over 45,000 motorists daily. Once the full expressway is connected to CAVITEX, it will serve at least 95,000 motorists daily, significantly improving traffic flow and accessibility between Cavite, Laguna, and the greater Manila area.

Far Eastern University (FEU), in collaboration with Turnitin, hosted an exclusive forum and roundtable discussion to explore challenges and opportunities presented by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The event emphasized the role of educators in harnessing AI competence to improve teaching pedagogy and enhance learning experiences.
Turnitin is a leading educational technology company that employs AI writing detection solutions aimed at helping educators promote academic integrity. Currently, the technology is integrated into FEU’s Canvas Learning Management System and serves as an assistive tool in the overall learning journey.
Richmond Riyadhen Lim, FEU Education Technology coordinator, discussed best practices in the use of AI and its role in shaping the future of education in the Philippines.
“AI is not here to replace us; humanity in education is still here and should be here… Instead, we can embrace AI to help our students unlock their potential for their limitless opportunities. We should be the pioneers of change. We have the power to reshape, reinvent, and rethink education because we are teachers,” said Richmond Riyadhen Lim, FEU Education Technology coordinator.
Lim, along with FEU Education Technology director Catherine Catamora and other academic leaders and other faculty members from different schools, converged with Turnitin’s international team during the event to discuss best AI practices and limitations in assisting teaching and learning.
Recently, FEU released a set of guidelines on the responsible and ethical use of AI for both its faculty and students.
Personalized learning through feedback and assessment
While AI can assist academic writing in various ways, a consensus emerged among the event participants that learning to write on one’s own remains a critical skill. This is where faculty and teacher intervention and guidance become crucial, especially in providing feedback and assessment to students.
James Thorley, Regional vice president of Turnitin, presented the global impacts of AI, including its growing influence in the education industry.
One way that Turnitin can assist teachers in providing feedback is by utilizing the platform’s Similarity Report feature. This feature scans student outputs and compares them to a larger database of student work and materials. This tool not only helps detect academic misconduct but also empowers educators to identify areas where students may need additional support through constructive feedback.
Continuous evaluation and personalized instruction from educators play a vital role in helping students understand the value of their work and the importance of personal effort in their academic journey.
Teacher empowerment through AI
In the Philippines, the ongoing conversation on teachers’ workload centers on the heavy volume of administrative tasks they are expected to perform. A paper published by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies highlighted that administrative workloads distract teachers from the actual job of teaching.
While it cannot fully address the problem, the adoption of AI can alleviate the burden of tasks such as lesson planning and output assessment, enabling teachers to focus more on engaging with students and providing personalized instruction.
However, FEU warns that educators must not forget the value of authentic assessment, which can only be provided when they have a personal understanding of their students’ skills and abilities. While AI can serve as a tool for assistance, educators are encouraged to use it prudently with respect to data reliability and integrity.
The exclusive forum hosted by Turnitin and FEU marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue about the ethical use of AI within the academic community.
