The New Fiesta in Chiang Mai

    New Ford Fiesta_002

Gadgets Magazine was part of the 23-man Philippine contingent that attended Ford’s International Media Drive for the new Fiesta held in Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Led by Ford Group Philippines’ Managing Director Kay Hart, AVP for Communications Joseph Anthony Ayllon, and Communications Manager Isa Suarez, we had the chance to try out Ford’s newest baby that’s rocking their award-winning engine, while taking in the sights of the beautiful Kingdom of Thailand.

The Fiesta is Ford’s second best-selling vehicle globally, and it is no wonder the company is investing heavily on its B-segment offerings. This latest iteration has undergone a facelift, and now features the trapezoidal front grille that is the signature of Ford’s new global family of vehicles. The same grill is bracketed by laser-cut headlamps that sweep off the front to create a dynamic, sophisticated look. Other new elements are the power-dome hood design, front bumper fascia, grill inserts, fog lamps, bolder taillights and the inlaid Ford badge, which was a classy touch.

Inside, the Fiesta exudes a premium feel. The leather steering wheel with the audio controls feels nice to the touch, and the knobs and buttons on the dash are within the drivers reach. The high-gloss finish of the upper instrument panel that flows to the lower center console is replicated in door panels, and Ford’s signature Ice Blue lighting illuminates the dials, switches and displays.

Technology that was once only available in Ford’s more expensive executions is now in the new Fiesta. Ford SYNC enables drivers to answer phone calls and select music from devices connected via Bluetooth or USB, and listen to text messages by simply using voice commands. The system enables drivers to stay connected while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times.

The system can remember twelve paired devices, and can connect concurrently to any two Bluetooth devices at any given time, as long as one is connected as a Hands Free device, and the other via USB. This is convenient when you want to listen to the music on your iPod, but still connect your phone. Since it was introduced, sync has been included in 7 million new vehicles sold by Ford worldwide, with another 9 million predicted in the coming years.

Other features that have trickled down to the new Fiesta are Smart Keyless Entry and the Ford Power Start button and go.

The top spec new Ford Fiesta will be powered by the patented 1.0-litre, 3-cylynder EcoBoost engine, that combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing to produce 125 PS of power and 170 Nm of peak torque, rivalling the power and performance of a traditional 1.6-litre petrol engine. For the ASEAN market, it is mated to Ford’s six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission.  This combination produces excellent fuel economy of 18.9 km/L and carbon dioxide emissions of just 121 g/km.

The new Ford Fiesta is also available with the global 1.5-litre Ti-VCT four-cylinder petrol engine that is paired with either the PowerShift six-speed automatic or the five-speed manual transmission. When paired with either gearbox, the Ford Fiesta returns identical fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions figures – 17.2 km/L and 137 g/km.

Aside from the high quality steel that is used for the Fiesta’s frame, other safety features include airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as Ford’s Intelligent Restraints System that minimizes injuries caused by seatbelts during collisions based on the passenger’s size.  Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) also come with.

To test the new Fiesta for ourselves, we were tasked with a drive composed of five legs that took us around Chiang Mai and covered some 236 kilometers of highways, city and mountain roads.

    20131120_080_P1080915

Our first destination was the Proud Phu Fah Resort located 1,150 meters above sea level, in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district. Despite the twisty and steep curves en route, the Fiesta displayed agility you wouldn’t expect from such a tiny engine. Shifting was smooth, with little cabin noise. Over snacks and coffee, we were given the lowdown about the two-time International Engine of the Year awardee, and the Ford reps tried their best to answer all our questions.

Before long, it was time to head out, and the beautiful Veranda: The High Resort was next on our list. The delicious lunch in the serene resort was a welcome respite from the tight winding roads we drove to get there. From there, we drove another 84 kilometers of what seemed like an endless highway to reach our last destination that was the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. The Fiesta’s stability was well pronounced as we sped through the highways. Handling was superb, even at our high speeds.

    20131120_173_P1080974

Ford has really upped the ante in the B-segment with the class leading features and award winning engine in the new Fiesta. We just hope the dealers have enough stock to cope with the demand that’s inevitable once this baby is out.

Placing second was a creative version of the PLDT Telerewards “Scream” commercial, led by Luigi Rosario from Mapua Institute of Technology. New Magpul phone cases for tactical awesomeness

    0

    category_125_8829

While I was browsing the Internet, I stumbled upon news of Magpul’s Field Cases. I’m no stranger to the case, as I have seen models of it for the older iPhones, and as far as I could tell, they were quite nice. For those who have no idea what Magpul is, they’re a US company that makes aftermarket parts and firearms accessories. Magazines, foregrips, pistol grips; Magpul is a solid brand. They do a lot of work with molded polymer, and it made perfect sense for them to make a case for some of the more popular mobile phones on the market.

The New cases, available in a few weeks, are designed for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4, as well as the older, non-retina iPad Mini. iPhone 5/5s, 4/4s and even 3G/3Gs cases are also available. The new cases have that same, familiar P-Mag design that’s both grippy and quite attractive as well, and will be available for USD16.95 for the phones, and USD 29.95 for the iPad. If you’re hankering for one, keep an eye out. The inevitably make their way over to our shores, if you know where to look. If you want to protect your device in the most tactical way possible, these cases are just the thing.

All-New Isuzu D-MAX posts strong sales record

    D-MAX_

Introduced in September, the all-new Isuzu D-MAX continues to build sales momentum as it posted phenomenal results in October, accelerating Isuzu Philippines Corporation’s (IPC) sales tally.

The All-New D-MAX’s 179-unit sales in September spiked to 339 units in October, or 160 more, resulting in an 89.4% growth, according to the latest combined reports released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. and the Truck Manufacturers Association.

The bulk of the additional figures in October can be credited to the pickup’s strong performance in Mindanao and Metro Manila markets.

The same reports showed that IPC sold 1,122 vehicles in October, 169 units more than the company’s 953-vehicle total in September—a 17.7% rise.

IPC’s growth in October was boosted by sales of its medium-duty and heavy-duty truck models (Category IV and V). Isuzu delivered 104 medium-duty trucks in October, 31.6% more than the 79-unit total in September, while 14 heavy-duty trucks were sold in October, a huge leap over the single unit moved during the previous month. The company’s light commercial vehicles also lifted October’s tally as 457 units of the Crosswind AUV and 29 units of the Alterra SUV were sold.

“The positive response of the domestic market toward the All-New D-MAX is a clear indication of consumer confidence over the Isuzu brand, which is bolstered by the consistent performance of our truck models as well as our other light commercial vehicles,” said IPC President Nobuo Izumina. Certainly, the buoyant state of the Philippine economy at present is a major factor as well as it spurs spending, and this can be gleaned in particular with Isuzu Philippines’ growth in October and in general with the upsurge of the entire automotive industry.”

IPC’s sales climb from September to October is mirrored in the company’s results during the first 10 months of the year. From January to October this year, IPC delivered 9,748 vehicles, a 1.6% rise from the 9,595 units it delivered during the same period in 2012.

A quick look at the LG G Pad

    2013-11-24 21.26.53

Not content with their already impressive smartphone outings in the forms of both the G2 and Nexus 5, LG wants to make it a hat trick with the newest member of the Android lineup. Their latest foray into the tablet space is the G Pad is here in our hands at the Gadgets HQ. We’re rushing a lab for you kids, and we’ll have a nice, quick video review up as well, but for now, here’a a quick teaser.

One of the first things you’ll notice with this tablet is just how thin and light it is. It measures in at a very svelte third of an inch thick and tips the scales at a measly 338 grams, far lighter that what one would expect from a tablet with a very generous 8.3-inch screen.

    2013-11-24 21.27.48

I have always, always said that a screen hovering somewhere around the 7-8 inch mark is the perfect size for you to carry around and use a lot, and this is the refinement of that, giving you an even bigger screen with inexplicably low weight. The display, with a resolution of 273ppi is gorgeous, bright, perfectly readable outdoors, and very nicely responsive.

The device comes with Android 4.2.2 JellyBean, which is a bit of a bummer, but as it is at the top of the totem pole in LG’s tablet lineup, I’m quite hopeful we should see an update very soon. It packs 16GB of internal memory, 2GB of RAM and a 1.7 GHz, quad-core Krait processor, plus Adreno 320 graphics which should be more than plenty to handle your favorite apps.2013-11-24 21.28.08

The back panel, which is a nice, brushed metal, is home to the two speakers, as well as the primary 5-MP main camera. And have i mentioned just how thin and light it is?

    2013-11-24 21.27.24

The G Pad is a Wi-Fi-only device, which isn’t really a deal-breaker, as it is more than likely going to tether off of your data plan and mobile phone anyway. This is a great way to keep weight and size down, and not really something I miss.

As I mentioned at the top, stay tuned fora  video review, as well as a full-on lab on this device in the coming issue of Gadgets!

In this time of tragedy, not everyone has their hearts in the right place

    0

    image01

This far past the devastation super typhoon  Haiyan blew through the country, people have come together to do their part in aiding those effected. There are many volunteers, donations in kind, and monetary gifts as well. Donating money to the relief effort is always very much appreciated, and, for many, the simplest way be which they can lend a hand. This method, particularly when done online, can help those who are unable to physically go because of their schedules or distance from the disaster.

Cybercriminals know this, and for them, taking advantage of people’s generosity in a time of crisis is just another day at the office. Many a criminal have put up a page on Facebook soliciting monetary donations, only to lead the generous donor to a personal account and nowhere even remotely near the people who need it. They have also resorted to sending spam via both email and SMS, encouraging people to donate to bogus charities and institutions. Trend Micro deals with this kind of thing on a daily basis, and they offer us a few tips on how to keep from getting scammed, while still being able to do your part to help.

How can users protect themselves from these scams and make sure that their donations end up in the right hands? Here are some useful tips.

    • Give to organizations you know and/or trust. Some scammers will try to pass themselves off as new charities established expressly for this disaster. Instead, donate to well-known charities that have been around for years. Alternately, smaller organizations that you personally know and trust to be reliable can also be a safe choice.

    • Be careful about appeals from social media and e-mail. Appeals to donate to various charities are spreading both via social media and e-mail messages. While many, if not most, of these are not scams, some will be. Some may be appeals from fake charities; others may just be lures to direct users to malicious websites. In either case, be careful about listening to these appeals. If you do decide to give to an organization whose appeal you saw here, go directly to their site by typing their URL into the address bar or using a search engine. This will help minimize the risks from potentially malicious links.

    • Check the payment site carefully. If you’re making a donation online, check the payment site as carefully as you would any other online payment. Whether it’s entering your credit card information directly, or using some other online payment site (like Amazon, Google, or PayPal,) be aware that these can be phished as well.

There are many charities that could use your donations, but this is not the time to let your guard down. These tips can help ensure that your donation gets to where it is needed the most. We also note that you can make donations to the American Red Cross from inside Facebook itself; details can be found in their official blog.
