    Review: A.C. Ryan PlayOn! HD

Standalone media players should curiously be more popular, considering the advancements in high-definition technology. While there are a multitude of products in the market, no single manufacturer has yet to truly standout. However, this might all change with A.C. Ryan’s Playon!HD.

Out of the box, this media player is surprisingly lightweight, considering that it’s  packed with a load of capabilities. Constructed out of hard plastic, its exterior design is wonderfully simple with its all-black casing and a front interface containing only the logo, power button and discrete remote receiver. Its minimalist design would definitely appeal to anybody who might be frightened at the complexities that most devices present today. However, there is a possible downside – the lack of any physical controls on the actual box means that it can only be operated with the included remote control.

Taking a peek at the rear of the Playon!HD reveals all of its multiple connection options: composite, component and HDMI ports for video; a pair of stereo analogue outputs; optical co-axial digital outputs and the Ethernet LAN port. A.C. Ryan has also generously included all the necessary cables for users to get started. The addition of the HDMI cable will definitely please a lot of consumers, not only for its inclusion, but for its attractive design as well.

Setting up the Playon!HD to your television is as easy as 123: connect the corresponding cables from the box to the TV; power up the unit, and locate the media you want to enjoy. Getting started is as wonderfully simple as its design, which makes it a prize in this entangled world of technology.

While the inclusion of an internal 3.5” hard disk sets the Playon!HD apart from other standalone media players in its class, it is a feature that is not entirely essential. Connecting the box directly to a computer and transferring files proved to be rather cumbersome and sluggish, and the same applies in utilizing its 10/100 LAN (network and internet) capabilities as well. It is far more intuitive to download movies using a computer, transfer them to an external hard drive, and subsequently connect it to the Playon!HD.

If the LAN and the internal hard disk could have been left out altogether, resulting in a smaller and more cost-effective media player, despite the Playon!HD’s already pocket-friendly price. While the more technologically adept user will appreciate these alternate connection options, the average consumer might really only need the USB ports. Nevertheless, having multiple choices on how to transfer/acquire media does make the Playon!HD considerably more appealing in comparison to other media players in its class.

Navigating through A.C. Ryan’s menu is a breeze, especially when using the “Browser” mode. Although there are various ways for users to locate their media files (i.e. by file type), this method proves to be the quickest and easiest. The interface is intuitive and user-friendly and while there is a slight learning curve, this is normal with any form of technology. Figuring out the menu will take minimal effort at best, and users will find themselves soaring through it in no time.

Finally, what makes A.C. Ryan’s Playon!HD shine is the multitude of video and audio formats it is able to play. It supports virtually every file format from MKV to RMVB, and even obscure formats that users probably won’t ever consider watching on a large screen display (i.e. FLV). Resolutions reach up to 720p, 1080i and 1080p, which should satisfy and HD fanatic’s appetite. It supports a wide range of audio types as well, particularly Dolby and DTS audio (pass-through or down-mixed to stereo). Truth be told, the Playon!HD is the hardware equivalent of VLC media player– it plays just about everything.

If users aren’t drawn in to take a peek at the Playon!HD by the vast support of file formats alone, it’s budget-friendly price will definitely raise its appeal. It is perfect for those that are constantly downloading and watching movies, and want an intuitive bridge for their media to play on their televisions.

    What’s hot:

    –       Support for virtually every video and audio format

    –       Intuitive menu interface

    What’s not:

    –       Slow transfer rate via LAN

    Buy Meter: 8.0

    Conclusion:

The A.C Ryan Playon!HD is a great standalone multimedia player that supports a range of formats, and is an essential gadget for any multimedia enthusiast.

10-year old girl finds zero day vulnerability in iOS and Android games

    Credit: Seth Rosenblatt/CNET

When we were ten, we were more concerned about who had the most cooties than hacking phones and finding zero day vulnerabilities. Alas, this generation doesn’t appreciate a good ol’ cootie hunt like we used to, and instead spend their time hacking games on mobile devices. Meet CyFi, a 10-year old girl that managed to find a zero day exploit in both iOS and Android devices while playing around with farm-type games. She found the exploit because she was tired of waiting for her plants to grow in real-time, and managed to find a way to trick the hardware in to advancing time faster than normal. CyFi revealed her exploit at Defcon Kids, which aim to foster white hat hacking on children who show the talent.

    Meet Flower, the Lens HoodCap

While  some of you might snicker at the grammar of the photos’ captions, this concept design is no laughing matter.

Meet the Flower, an accessory for DSLRs that intuitively combines the lens cap and hood, two of the most common add-ons in the world of digital photography.

Designed by Hyi Joong Rhie and Lee Sang Hwa for the 2011 Spark Awards, the Flower blossoms via a twisting mechanism, similar to how you fasten/unfasten a lens onto a camera. It’s “blades” fold on top of each other when closed, forming the Cap. Its alter ego, the Hood, blossoms when its in the open position.

For now, we simply have to ‘cross our fingers and hope that more creative concepts such as the Flower become a reality.

NVIDIA’s Tesla GPUs power J.P. Morgan’s risk calculations, unclear on Battlefield 3 use

While NVIDIA is known the world because of their graphic cards and tablet processors, few know that the graphics company also provides GPUs for businesses and supercomputer use. Research and financial firms alike use their GPUs to do a lot of number crunching, and J.P. Morgan, the largest investment bank entity is one of them. As part of a three-year plan to reduce the computational costs of risk calculation by 75 percent, J.P. Morgan’s Equity Derivatives Group added NVIDIA Tesla M2070 GPUs to its data centres. More than half the equity derivative-focused risk computations run by the bank have been moved from running on just CPU-based systems, to running on hybrid GPU/CPU-based systems. Utilising GPUs as companion processors has accelerated application performance by 40X compared to running them on CPUs aloneand delivered over 80 percent savings, enabling greener data centres that deliver higher performance for the same power.

Unboxed: Sparkle Calibre X560 Ti DF

A month ago Sparkle announced that they’ll be releasing six upgraded versions of its hi-end Calibre graphic cards that presumably will cater to a range of needs, from gamers with money to burn to the more sensible enthusiast. Well today we just got one of their newly released cards in the form of the Calibre X560 Ti DF, which came straight from the HQ of the firm in Taiwan.

Right off the bat this particular card exudes an air of luxury that other, similar cards lack. The box has a huge logo of the Calibre brand, with the words Professional Graphics Card written across it.

That simple, luxurious air translates to the packaging, and ultimately to the card itself. While physically not the biggest nor the most imposing graphics card we’ve seen (we’ll give that title to the monstrous, dual-GPU deals we’ve seen in the past), the Calibre X560 Ti DF still looks intimidating in its own right.

For one, it doesn’t use the gaudy purple fans of Sparkle’s other product offerings, and the metal and black construction of the card makes it more menacing that it actually is.

But don’t think this card is a pushover – we haven’t managed to stick it into a system yet, but Sparkle promises that it delivers a 22% increase in performance in 3DMark 11 over a reference design, and is factory overclocked right from the box.

We’ll get a review up as soon as we finish evaluating it.

Gmail now has a Preview Pane for your inbox

Checking your inbox in Gmail just got a whole lot easier.

Although I value my Google account, sifting through a heap of emails reveals the rather counter-intuitive interface of Gmail. Now, with the new Preview Pane, breezing through emails is much quicker.

This new feature can be found by clicking on the cog icon located on the upper right corner of your Gmail account. Simply select “Mail Settings” and once the page is open, click on the “Labs” tab and then scroll down until you find “Preview Pane” (the Lab features are arranged alphabetically).

Once you’ve located Preview Pane, all you have to do is select “Enable”, then scroll all the way down and “Save Your Changes”. After that, Google will automatically redirect you to your inbox.

You might notice that nothing has changed – that’s because you still need to select the mode in which Preview Pane will display your messages. The toggle button is located on the right.

There are three options available: No Split, Vertical Split and Horizontal Split (obviously you’re going to choose one of the latter two). Once you’ve selected your orientation preference, simply click on your inbox, select a message and witness Preview Pane in action.

Hackers can start your car, and overdose you with insulin without you knowing

If you’re a paranoid android, you might not want to read the following stories. With that little warning out of the way, researchers attending the Black Hat Technical conference (basically hackers getting together, hacking…stuff) have demonstrated that they can hack a car (a Subaru Outback to be specific) using an Android phone and a process they call war texting. The duo from the iSec Partners security firm set up their own GSM networked and snatched password authentication messages over the air.

A more nefarious hack demonstrated by ironically, diabetic, researcher Jay Radcliff figured out how to hack an insulin pump hooked up to a wireless glucose monitor and potentially deliver a lethal dose of insulin. The most troubling part? If the attacker has a powerful enough antenna, they can do this while being half a mile away. Terrifying.
