    James Dyson Award 2025 seeks groundbreaking inventions from young engineers and scientists

    The James Dyson Award, an international student design and engineering competition, is calling for entries to its 2025 program. From everyday challenges to the world’s most pressing issues, the Award calls for current or recent students to submit problem-solving ideas that could make a real difference in people’s lives.

    Since it was established in 2005, the James Dyson Award has supported more than 400 student inventions with more than PHP70 million in prize money and a global platform. Those who progress to the final stages and are selected by Sir James Dyson as the global winners will claim a prize of PHP2,168,000 and a chance to gain international media exposure, providing a springboard to commercialize their inventions.

    RAMUN

    James Dyson Award

    RAMUN (Resistivity Acquisition and Monitoring of the Underground), a real-time underground monitoring system, is helping cities tackle flooding, subsidence, and groundwater mismanagement. Invented by Joseph Aristotle De Leon, a Manufacturing Engineering student at De La Salle University-Manila, RAMUN provides non-invasive, flexible monitoring designed for urban environments. Since being named the 2024 Philippine National Winner, De Leon has been refining RAMUN for real-world applications, with the ambition to deploy it in cities worldwide, empowering communities with deeper insights into the unseen world beneath their feet.

    MAKE-ROSCOPE

    Make-roscope, a portable keychain microscope, is making science more accessible for students without access to laboratory equipment. Invented in 2023 by Jeremy De Leon, an engineering student at Mapúa, it transforms any smartphone or tablet into a microscope, magnifying objects up to 125 times with a single lens. Made from durable, food-grade silicone, its flexible arms ensure clear imaging without complex adjustments. After being recognized as part of the 2023 James Dyson Award International Top 20, Make-roscope continues to expand its reach, bringing hands-on scientific exploration to students worldwide.

    BRAKONG

    Brakong, a lightweight and breathable external breast prosthesis, is redefining comfort for breast cancer survivors. Made from bakong, an aquatic plant with natural antimicrobial properties, it helps keep the prosthesis clean and fresh while minimizing weight for all-day wear. Its bio-based design promotes circular sustainability, reducing waste by allowing it to be cycled back into the economy. Using 3D scanning technology, Brakong is customized to match each wearer’s chest contours for a perfect fit. Invented by Emmanuelle Pangilinan and Jason Pechardo of the University of the Philippines – Diliman, Brakong was recognized as part of the 2022 James Dyson Award International Top 20 and continues to advance sustainable prosthetic innovation.

    Call for Entries

    Sir James Dyson, founder of Dyson, said: “I started the James Dyson Award 20 years ago with the mission to inspire and support the next generation of design engineers. The brilliant ideas we’ve seen since then prove that young people are passionate about providing solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, using design, engineering and technology – in medicine, the environment and much more. I look forward to discovering what inventions will be put forward this year – good luck!”

    The deadline to apply is midnight on 16th July 2025. Shortlisted entries in each participating country or region will then be evaluated by national judging panels with expertise across design and engineering, based on functionality, design process, differentiation, and commercial viability.

    The National Winners, selected by these judging panels and each winning PHP361,300 prize, will be announced on 10th September, the Global Top 20 Shortlist, selected by Dyson Engineers, on 15th October, and the Global Winners, selected by James Dyson, on 5th November.

    Visa, a global leader in digital payments, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) aimed at expanding access to financial services for Filipinos, particularly those in underserved sectors such as rural communities. 

    Under the agreement, Visa will utilize its innovation in digital payments as well as its global payments network to explore opportunities with PHLPost in modernizing and expanding the reach of its financial services, which include handling remittances and money orders for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as well as disbursement of healthcare subsidies, social welfare payments, and disaster relief.  

    Visa and PHLPost will also explore opportunities to enhance business and financial literacy for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), as well as share best practices in making financial transactions more seamless, secure, and accessible. 

    The PHLPost remains committed to providing essential postal and financial services to Filipinos, especially those in remote and or Filipinos abroad. Through this collaboration with Visa, PHLPost aims to enhance its financial offerings by integrating digital payment solutions, improving transaction efficiency, and ensuring greater security for its customers through good governance. By modernizing its services, PHLPost seeks to bridge the financial gap for communities that rely on its extensive network across the country.

    To enhance the driving experience, NLEX Corporation rolls out road improvement projects in its
    expressway network.

    Asset maintenance is an essential part of expressway operations. It focuses on keeping roads and
    all expressway assets in excellent condition, including refurbishment, restoration, and aesthetic
    improvements. To support these maintenance efforts and to provide smoother travel for
    motorists, a portion of the toll fees are allocated specifically for this purpose.

    “Ensuring safety and convenience is essential for providing a high-quality customer experience.
    While our routine inspections and repairs help prevent serious road issues, our comprehensive
    annual maintenance program helps enhance the quality of the roads,” said NLEX Officer-in-
    Charge and Chief Financial Officer Maria Theresa Wells.

    The tollway company’s heavy pavement maintenance program is in progress, with the Bocaue-
    Burol stretch completed. Asphalt overlays to specific sections of NLEX and SCTEX are
    ongoing, while areas with minimal damage will receive patching as needed.

    NLEX is repainting all its road infrastructure, including bridge parapets, toll plaza barriers, and
    concrete dividers. Installation of new road signs is scheduled for completion in May, alongside
    refurbishments at the toll booths. Restoration works on guardrails and fences are also ongoing to
    prevent unauthorized access to the expressway.

    Retrofitting works on 42 bridges along the expressway were completed in 2024, while repairs to
    the Marilao River Bridge expansion joints will be completed by March 2025.

    Toyota announces extended 5-year warranty for new vehicles

    Leading mobility company Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has announced the new Toyota 5-Year Warranty. The extended warranty program applies to all Toyota vehicles sold from January 1, 2025, onwards.

    Previously, Toyota vehicles were covered by a 3-year or 100,000km warranty, whichever comes first. With the new Toyota 5-year Warranty, customers can get up to 2  years or 40,000km of additional warranty provided that they are able to avail the minimum number of Periodic Maintenance Services (PMS) during the 3-year warranty period, with at least 1 PMS per year at any Toyota dealer.

    All Toyota models released January 1, 2025 onwards, and all Toyota vehicles under contract with Kinto One or Kinto One Business starting January 1, 2025, may qualify for the Toyota 5-Year Warranty.

    How to qualify for the Toyota 5-Year warranty

    Customers who will avail at least six (6) PMS at any Toyota dealer with at least one (1) PMS per year during the 3-Year or 100,000 KM warranty period will qualify for the 4th Year Full Coverage additional warranty, which has the same coverage as the 3-Year or 100,000 KM warranty. However, customers who will avail less than six (6) PMS will qualify for the 4th Year Limited Coverage additional warranty on the condition that they were able to avail 3 to 5 PMS with at least one (1) PMS per year at any Toyota dealer. The Limited Coverage additional warranty does not cover wear and tear parts related to suspension, steering, and brake systems.

    Customers who are able to avail of the 4th Year Full Coverage additional warranty are eligible for an additional one (1) year or 20,000 KM extension on the 5th Year provided that they were able to avail of at least two (2) PMS during the 4th year ownership period. However, vehicles of customers that were only able to avail of one (1) PMS during the 4th year ownership period are qualified for the Limited Coverage additional warranty only.
