    DOLE is the government organization responsible for formulating policies and implementing programs and services in the employment sector in the Philippines.     Jobstreet by SEEK has also pledged to support DOLE’s Youth Employability Programs through career development seminars.

The JAMA Lube Oil Seminar 2025, organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) and hosted by Petron Corporation, provided key insights into the latest advancements in engine oil technology. Held on March 5 at the Makati Diamond Residences, the seminar gathered global automotive and lubricant experts to discuss how cutting-edge lubricants are shaping the future of motoring in the Philippines.

    Optimizing Fuel Efficiency with Advanced Engine Oils

    One of the key takeaways from the seminar was the role of ultra-low viscosity oils in improving fuel efficiency. Experts highlighted that engine oils such as 0W-8, 0W-16, and 0W-20 can enhance fuel economy by up to 3%. While this may seem minimal, the savings add up significantly over time. As automakers continue to develop vehicles designed for low-viscosity oils, Filipino drivers are encouraged to check their car’s recommended oil grade and transition to high-quality, fuel-efficient lubricants.

    Data from JAMA indicates that using ultra-low viscosity oils could reduce CO₂ emissions by 373,000 tons annually in Japan, with similar potential reductions in the Philippines if adoption increases. Additionally, recent innovations in additive technology have improved the thermal and oxidation stability of these oils, extending engine life and improving overall efficiency.

    Engine Oils for a Cleaner, Greener Future

    Beyond fuel efficiency, modern low-friction lubricants also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing vehicle emissions. Studies show that switching to ultra-low viscosity oils in Indonesia has the potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by 258,000 tons per year for in-use vehicles and 11,700 tons for new vehicles. A similar shift in the Philippines, particularly in traffic-heavy areas like Metro Manila and Cebu, could significantly improve air quality.

    New lubricant formulations are also being developed to align with evolving emission regulations across Asia, particularly as countries move toward stricter Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions standards.     On February 18, IPC, through Isuzu La Union, turned over 10 units of the Isuzu FVR34QS AMT with dump truck bodies to the City Government of Zamboanga. These trucks are a crucial part of the city’s initiative to improve garbage collection across all 98 barangays.

    Given Zamboanga’s proximity to coastal waters and marine ecosystems, efficient waste management is essential to prevent pollution and protect the city’s abundant reef fish population. These new Isuzu dump trucks will help ensure cleaner streets, safer waterways, and a healthier environment for the community.

    The Isuzu FVR34QS is designed for heavy-duty waste collection, boasting a payload capacity of up to 10,835 kg and powered by a 6HK1-TCN Blue Power Diesel engine that delivers 177 PS of maximum power and 706 N-m of maximum torque.

    During the turnover, Mario Ojales, IPC department head for fleet sales, reminded city officials of the importance of proper maintenance to ensure the trucks’ longevity.

    The Yamaha Philippines Racing Team is set to change the race and create champions with its roster for the 2025 season. This year is set to be the most thrilling, ambitious, and game-changing yet, with the team locked in for the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) and the continuous cultivation of future champions in the BLU CRU Program. All of this encapsulates the brand’s vision and unwavering commitment to building a legacy of excellence in Filipino racing because this year is not just about competing but revolutionizing the sport.

    It was a celebration of speed, precision, and the pursuit of greatness at the Carmona Racing Circuit. The teams proudly took centerstage as they were honored for their performance from last season. Their dedication and resilience throughout the races not only brought victories but also inspired countless Filipinos to pursue their dreams.

    Front lining the team in the international competition is the “Wonderboy” McKinley Kyle Paz. He is a certified trailblazer who revolutionized Filipino racing. He has contributed his team’s number one overall in the SS600 category in the ARRC with his podium finish in the first round and 7th place in the individual standings. In the 2024 Inside Racing Grand Prix, he was the UB155 Ltd. GP Champion, SS200 GP Champion, and UB150 Open GP Champion.

    “The Rocketboy” April King Mascardo is finally back on track after battling a major injury that caused his ARRC stint to be cut short. His early exit from the season gravely affected his team’s standing but during his performance, he delivered a remarkable achievement by placing third in the first round. He also achieved the following in the IRGP: 2nd place in the UB155 LTD GP, 2nd place in the SS200 GP, and 1st place in the UB150 Open GP.

    Gian Carlo Mauricio is set to pursue a new challenge to further his academic career. Although leaving the sport, his passion and contributions to the team throughout his 3-year career have left a mark in Philippine racing. He was race champion in the second round of ARRC in China. In addition, he also dominated national tournaments along with teammates Paz and Mascardo.

    The Yamaha satellite racing teams also delivered incredible feats last season. The 4S1M Yamaha Racing Team was recognized for clinching the fourth overall team spot in the UB150 category in the ARRC, led by “The Hitman” JE Inguito. With the SEC Yamaha Racing Team, JD Purino was hailed as the 2024 MORAC UB King. While Bethany Tolentino was MORAC SS LW Open Champion. These riders contributed to the team’s 4-peat as the UB Team Overall Champion in MORAC. 

    True to its mission of nurturing young riders, Yamaha Motor Philippines honored the group of riders who competed in the Yamaha R3 BLU CRU Asia-Pacific Championship. Mytchell Ngo achieved 18th overall and was the Strong Comeback Awardee, Zain Doblada was 15th overall and the Most Improved Awardee, while Moy Reyes was 9th overall in the rider standing. Coach Joey Rivero was also recognized as the official coach of the Yamaha Blu Cru Rider Development Program & Blu Cru R3.

    The Yamaha Philippines Racing Team is off to a bold new era. The presentation of the new liveries symbolizes the start of a new season and a renewed passion for dominating every step of the way. With this comes the addition of the newest member of the team to finally complete the lineup.

    To ensure that the new rider embodies what it takes to join the team, aspirants went through the “Yamaha Challenge Cup,” where they underwent a rigorous series of physical and mental evaluations. These included flexibility, strength and endurance, reflex assessment, race aptitude, and behavior. Kyle Paz and April King played a key role in the tryouts, analyzing the aspirants’ skills to ensure they complemented the team’s dynamic. Throughout the process, the candidates demonstrated remarkable determination and perseverance.

    Among them, EJ Sobretodo was recognized as the standout performer, securing his place on the racing team. EJ has rightfully secured his place in the lineup, thanks to his skills, determination, and competitive spirit. He is set to compete in the UB150 category alongside April King Mascardo. To celebrate this achievement, the riders completed a lap on the racetrack, marking their first official ride as a unified team.

    “Human Interactions Still Matter” — British Council IELTS on the rise of AI in English assessments

    For Filipino students and professionals aspiring to work or study abroad, taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to assess their English proficiency is a crucial first step to fostering genuine connections and achieving global success. However, as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more integrated into other English language testing systems, concerns about whether it truly captures a candidate’s communication skills remain.

    Recognizing both its potential and limitations, the British Council and its IELTS partners are exploring how AI can assist examiners and provide detailed feedback to test takers without replacing human input. As advancements in AI continue, the British Council prefers an authentic and human-centric approach that fosters real-world communication skills. 

    Findings from a recent British Council research report on AI in English Language Teaching indicate that while AI can effectively evaluate basic language skills like lexical choice, grammar, and comprehension, it still requires improvements in accurately assessing more advanced cognitive abilities like producing complex discourse and formulating nuanced, layered arguments. This is particularly evident in IELTS speaking tests, where cultural context, social interaction, and meaningful dialogue are essential. 

    The British Council, the organization that co-founded and jointly runs the global IELTS English-language standardized test, understands the importance of capturing both technical accuracy and contextual nuances and has long relied on trained human examiners to deliver precise and well-rounded assessments that reflect the complexities of human communication.

    The British Council’s Human-Centric Approach

    The three-part IELTS speaking test assesses candidates on how well they engage in real-world communications in varying degrees of formality and across various criteria—fluency, coherence, lexical resource, and pronunciation. Their examiners are trained to recognize these nuanced expressions, evaluating content and accuracy, but also contextual appropriacy and tone —elements that are still challenging for AI tools and software to interpret.

    “Our human-led approach ensures that we assess both the content of what’s being said and the way it’s being communicated—skills that are important in interactions,” said Zoe Zhang, Regional Director for Exams at the British Council. “This dynamic exchange allows us to gain deeper insights into a candidate’s ability to respond, adapt, and navigate different contexts.”

    Why Humans (and Nuance) Matter

    The distinction between a Band 7 and Band 9 speaker lies in the subtleties of spoken communication—the ability to construct layered arguments, navigate complex topics, and engage in dialogue, according to a British Council East Asia Team case study. Such critical distinctions separating a good speaker from an exceptional one is something only human examiners are equipped to interpret, the study further notes. 

    Since AI models are trained on large pools of data, they may favor certain speech patterns, dialects, or cultural norms, leading to uneven or inaccurate evaluations. These challenges underscore the need to balance AI’s efficiency with human judgment.

    “Our goal is to help candidates develop communication skills that will serve them long after the exam,” said Zoe Zhang, regional director for exams at the British Council. “While human-to-human communication has always been regarded as the most reliable method, we understand the growing role of AI in language assessment. We are always looking for opportunities to offer a more thorough evaluation of candidates’ abilities and better prepare them for success in our interconnected world.” 

    While AI is increasingly being explored in language assessments for cost efficiency and greater standardization, the British Council believes that accurate results in high-stakes IELTS Speaking tests still require a human element. Not only because machines still struggle to interpret the complexities and nuances of human communication, but they also risk bringing in biases from their data sources and programming.

    The James Dyson Award, an international student design and engineering competition, is calling for entries to its 2025 program. From everyday challenges to the world’s most pressing issues, the Award calls for current or recent students to submit problem-solving ideas that could make a real difference in people’s lives.

    Since it was established in 2005, the James Dyson Award has supported more than 400 student inventions with more than PHP70 million in prize money and a global platform. Those who progress to the final stages and are selected by Sir James Dyson as the global winners will claim a prize of PHP2,168,000 and a chance to gain international media exposure, providing a springboard to commercialize their inventions.

    The deadline to apply is midnight on 16th July 2025. Shortlisted entries in each participating country or region will then be evaluated by national judging panels with expertise across design and engineering, based on functionality, design process, differentiation, and commercial viability.

    The National Winners, selected by these judging panels and each winning PHP361,300 prize, will be announced on 10th September, the Global Top 20 Shortlist, selected by Dyson Engineers, on 15th October, and the Global Winners, selected by James Dyson, on 5th November.

    To enhance the driving experience, NLEX Corporation rolls out road improvement projects in its
    expressway network.

    Asset maintenance is an essential part of expressway operations. It focuses on keeping roads and
    all expressway assets in excellent condition, including refurbishment, restoration, and aesthetic
    improvements. To support these maintenance efforts and to provide smoother travel for
    motorists, a portion of the toll fees are allocated specifically for this purpose.

    “Ensuring safety and convenience is essential for providing a high-quality customer experience.
    While our routine inspections and repairs help prevent serious road issues, our comprehensive
    annual maintenance program helps enhance the quality of the roads,” said NLEX Officer-in-
    Charge and Chief Financial Officer Maria Theresa Wells.

    The tollway company’s heavy pavement maintenance program is in progress, with the Bocaue-
    Burol stretch completed. Asphalt overlays to specific sections of NLEX and SCTEX are
    ongoing, while areas with minimal damage will receive patching as needed.

    NLEX is repainting all its road infrastructure, including bridge parapets, toll plaza barriers, and
    concrete dividers. Installation of new road signs is scheduled for completion in May, alongside
    refurbishments at the toll booths. Restoration works on guardrails and fences are also ongoing to
    prevent unauthorized access to the expressway.

    Retrofitting works on 42 bridges along the expressway were completed in 2024, while repairs to
    the Marilao River Bridge expansion joints will be completed by March 2025.
