6 reasons why the vivo V40 Lite is the perfect gift this holiday season

vivo has come out with some impressive smartphones this year. Our favorite is the vivo V40 that checks all the right boxes. While the vivo V40 is the crème de la crème, the youngest brother in the bunch, the vivo V40 Lite is also worth considering especially for those on a budget.

Here are some reasons why the vivo V40 Lite is the perfect gift this season.

    1. The Powerful Specs

The vivo V40 Lite is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 (5G Variant). The processor is paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. The internal storage is also expandable up to 1TB via the microSD slot.

The vivo V40 Lite may not be as powerful as its older siblings, but it still packs a mean punch. It can still run most apps and games, when we tried the vivo V40 Lite we found that it handles esports games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Honor of Kings flawlessly. When it came to heavier games like Genshin Impact, it can still run it at medium settings but expect a few frame drops during high action sequences.

Here are some of the benchmarks we got from the vivo V40 Lite:

    2. AI Aura Light Portraits and Camera

The vivo V40 astounded us with its AI Aura Light portraits courtesy of its amazing triple Zeiss cameras. While the vivo V40 Lite does not have the same Zeiss optics, it nevertheless captures amazing pictures.

We took the vivo V40 Lite on our trip to Singapore to check out what it can do. The phone did deliver and was able to capture great images even though it does not have the Zeiss partnership. Photos during daylight were crisp and sharp with realistic tones to them, while night shots were pleasantly good. Where the vivo V40 Lite shines is portraits, especially with its AI Aura Light Portrait. The AI Aura Light allowed subjects to be fully immersed in light while allowing the camera to capture a balanced image.

    3. Amazing AMOLED Display

One of the immediate things you’ll notice with the vivo V40 Lite is its display. The vivo V40 Lite is equipped with an FHD+ (2400 x 1080) AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The smooth display is a great companion during our gaming sessions and movie catchup nights

The display has a peak brightness of 1800 nits, more than enough to use the device under direct sunlight. This is especially useful when you want to capture those amazing pictures under the sun. We found this feature useful when watching movies on our flight with the plane windows opened.

    4. Extra capable batteries with 80W Fast charging and 4-year battery health

Another notable feature of the vivo V40 Lite is its 5000 mAh battery. Sure a lot of smartphones now come with 5000 mAh battery as standard, what’s different with the vivo V40 Lite is its 24-dimension battery security protection. The protection ensures that the battery will retain longevity and durability. Based on vivo’s own testing, the battery with 1600 cycles will degrade to 80% of its initial capacity which if you’re charging and discharging fully once per day will take you four years to achieve.

Aside from outstanding battery safety and health system, the vivo V40 Lite has an 80W FlashCharge capability. This means you can get 80% of power in just 30 minutes of charging. For those who regularly charge their device overnight, the vivo V40 Lite also has overnight charging protection where the phone adapts to its user’s sleep habits slowly charging the device before completely filling it up just before you wake up.

    5. Durable yet stylish body

The vivo V40 Lite may not have a similar look to its older siblings, but it still a stunning phone to look at. It comes in three colors, Titanium Silver, Dreamy Violet, and Dynamic Black. Our review unit came in the Titanium Silver colorway, which looks like a design from a much more expensive device.

The vivo V40 Lite has an ultra-slim design with just 7.79mm thick. It’s thinner than some of its competitors and at just 188g, it’s significantly lighter too.

The camera setup departs from the vivo V40 with its cushion-cut diamond design. The camera module has a squarer design over the circular housing of the V40. On the sides of the V40 Lite are metallic high-gloss frame which adds to its premium looks. Finally, the Diamond Starry texture of the back helps in elevating the design of the phone as the reflective pattern adds a bit of sophistication.

    6. Made for every budget

Finally, and what I think is the single best reason to get a vivo V40 Lite this holiday season – its price. The vivo V40 Lite comes in two distinct variants a 4G model and a 5G model. The 4G variant comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The only difference it has from what we used is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 processor. The vivo V40 Lite comes in at just PHP 13,999

Meanwhile, there are two variants of the vivo V40 Lite 5G. Our review unit with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage will set you back PHP 15,999. While the other variant with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage retails for PHP 18,999.

Compared to its competitors, the vivo V40 Lite offers a lot more specs for the same and sometimes even lesser price. Plus the wide variety of models and specs means that you can get the vivo V40 Lite and everything it has to offer at prices that makes sense to you.

You can check out the vivo V40 Lite in vivo concept stores and kiosks nationwide, as well as via vivo e-store, Shopee, and Lazada.

Palo Alto Networks: Stay safe this holiday shopping season with good cyber hygiene practices

With the year-end shopping season, Palo Alto Networks urges heightened cybersecurity vigilance. This period sees a surge in online activities and financial transactions — from scouring for the best shopping deals to holiday travel bookings, ticket purchases, and cross-border money transfers for holiday gifts— this holiday shopping season is a prime time for cybercriminals to take advantage of the unsuspecting digital shoppers through phishing scams, fraudulent websites, and payment fraud.

The impact is evident in the losses reported in the Philippines in 2024, totaling USD8.1B due to online scams. With online activity set to surge during the upcoming shopping season, Palo Alto Networks emphasizes the critical need for heightened cybersecurity awareness.

“As the Philippines’ retail and e-commerce sectors continue to expand, the need for strengthened cybersecurity becomes even more critical,” said Oscar Visaya, country manager for Palo Alto Networks in the Philippines. “The first line of protection is always proactive defense. Businesses must proactively secure their platforms and consumers should remain vigilant to ensure safety and security this holiday season.”

The rise of online shopping, digital payments, and holiday planning has transformed consumer behavior in the Philippines but has also introduced new risks. High online transaction volumes during key events like 11.11, Black Friday, and holiday travel planning create opportunities for cybercriminals, especially as consumers increasingly leverage digital payment methods for their transactions. Locally, 53% of consumers use QR codes, while 68% rely on mobile wallets, increasing exposure to cyber threats.

As online transactions surge, consumers face growing risks from threats like APK attacks — malicious software targeting mobile apps—and deepfake scams. To stay safe, consumers need to be on guard about their online security, especially during peak holiday seasons.

Palo Alto Networks offers the following best practices to ensure a safe experience:

    • Verify Authenticity: Double-check emails and offers before clicking on any links. Look out for misspellings, unusual domains, and suspicious attachments.
    • Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA for all accounts, especially when shopping online, to provide an extra layer of security.
    • Shop Through Official Channels: Avoid unofficial or unknown websites. Stick to trusted and secure online shopping platforms.
    • Beware of Phishing Scams: Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and fake order confirmation emails.
    • Strengthen Passwords: Use strong, unique passwords for all online accounts and consider using a password manager for added security.
    • Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Never provide sensitive personal details like social security numbers or banking information in response to unsolicited requests.

At the same time, businesses must strengthen their defenses against cyber threats. Common threats during peak periods include social engineering tactics like phishing scams, which trick employees into sharing sensitive information, and ransomware attacks, which can lock down critical systems until a ransom is paid. Additionally, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks can overwhelm retail websites with traffic, causing potential downtime and disrupting the customer experience.

To effectively mitigate these risks, businesses should adopt a Zero Trust approach that emphasizes strict verification for every user and device accessing their networks, ensuring that no implicit trust is given. By integrating comprehensive threat detection, response, and data protection into a Zero Trust framework, businesses can enhance visibility, streamline security operations, and enable real-time threat responses. This approach not only safeguards sensitive data but also maintains a seamless user experience, ensuring both protection and convenience for consumers.

“Whether you’re a business owner, employee, or consumer, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. With the holiday season and Christmas shopping in full swing, Filipinos may feel more inclined to act on attractive offers without verifying the source. Always verify and adopt a Zero Trust thinking. If the offer is too good to be true, it probably is.  By fostering a culture of vigilance, we can protect ourselves and others in a landscape where threats are constant” added Visaya.

    • Fish and Fishery Products: Permits from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for live, fresh, dried, frozen, and chilled items.

Many exhibitors showcased eco-friendly products and cutting-edge technologies, demonstrating the sector’s commitment to environmental responsibility and value creation.
    • Facilitating Business Linkages and Market Access: The event fostered valuable business connections and networking opportunities, enabling local producers to engage with potential buyers, distributors, and investors from both domestic and international markets. This facilitated crucial partnerships and opened doors to new markets for Philippine coconut products.
    • Generating Substantial Economic Impact: Initial assessments indicate that the trade fair generated significant interest and facilitated business deals, injecting a much-needed boost to the Philippine coconut industry and contributing to its overall growth and development.

The COCONUTPhilippines Trade Fair is a crucial component of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Program (CFIDP), mandated under Republic Act No. 11524, the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act. This comprehensive program, implemented through the collaborative efforts of 14 key agencies, underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing the coconut industry by empowering coconut farmers, diversifying income sources, expanding market reach, and alleviating poverty.

The resounding success of the inaugural COCONUTPhilippines Trade Fair signals a promising future for the Philippine coconut industry. With heightened global recognition, enhanced market access, and sustained growth, the industry is poised to make significant contributions to the country’s economic development and uplift the lives of millions of Filipinos.

Palo Alto Networks forecasts APAC cybersecurity landscape: Predictions for 2025 and beyond

Palo Alto Networks, the global cybersecurity leader, has released its 2025 cybersecurity predictions for the Asia Pacific region, outlining five key trends that cyber practitioners can expect to unfold in the coming twelve months and position their organizations for a more secure future.

Organizations across the APAC region have emphasized embedding AI into business processes in 2024. This includes cybersecurity processes, where organizations and their adversaries are engaged in an AI arms race. But alarmingly, according to a recent PwC report, more than 40% of leaders say they do not understand the cyber risks posed by emerging technologies like Generative AI. In 2025, AI will become central to cybersecurity strategy with organisations using AI to proactively mitigate risk. Crucially, they will also seek to secure their own AI models.

Simon Green, president of Asia Pacific and Japan at Palo Alto Networks, notes: “In 2025, our region will face a perfect storm of AI-driven cyber threats, escalating in scale, sophistication, and impact.   The days of fragmented security approaches are over—organizations must pivot to unified platforms powered by transparent and trustworthy AI to stay ahead. As quantum attacks loom and deepfakes become mainstream tools of deception, businesses will either innovate or risk being outpaced by adversaries. The stakes have never been higher, and trust will be the ultimate currency in this new era of cybersecurity. Those who fail to adapt risk not just breaches but irreparable damage to their reputation and resilience.”

From the anticipated surge in high-impact cyber attacks to the integration of quantum AI for energy-efficient solutions, these predictions for 2025 serve as essential guidelines for organizations to shape their cybersecurity strategies and maximize the potential of AI technologies.

Cyber Infrastructure will be centered around a single unified data security platform

In 2025, the organizations will address increased complexity by reducing the number of cybersecurity tools in use, and shifting to a unified platform, offering enhanced visibility and control. The ongoing cyber skills shortage will continue to accelerate this trend. A unified platform will provide end-to-end visibility and context, spanning code repositories, cloud workloads, networks, and SOCs. Ultimately this creates a more holistic security architecture with fewer dashboards. The convergence of all security layers onto a unified platform will optimize resources, improve overall efficiency, and enable organizations to build more resilient, adaptive defenses against evolving threats

2025 is the year deepfakes go mainstream in APAC

Deepfakes are already being used for nefarious purposes in the APAC region. While some have been used to spread political misinformation, the most effective attacks have targeted corporations for financial gain, as the employee at a Hong Kong engineering firm duped into wiring millions of dollars to a scammer who had used deepfakes to imitate the CFO and executive team on a video conference.

Savvy criminals will take note and use ever-improving generative AI technology to launch credible deepfake attacks. The use of audio deepfakes will also become more widespread in these attacks, as the available technology allows for highly credible voice cloning. We can expect deepfakes to be used alone or as part of a larger attack much more often in 2025.

Beyond the Quantum security hype: what to expect in 2025

Quantum computing projects are spreading across the region, with governments and venture capital firms investing heavily in local initiatives.

While quantum attacks on widely used encryption methods are not yet feasible, nation-state-backed threat actors are expected to intensify their “harvest now, decrypt later” tactics, targeting highly classified data with the intent to unlock it when quantum technology advances. This poses a risk to governments and businesses, with the potential to jeopardise civilian and military communications, undermine critical infrastructure, and overcome security protocols for most internet-based financial transactions. We will likely also see nation state actors target organisations developing quantum computers themselves, in corporate espionage attacks.

To counteract these threats effectively, all organizations will need to act and adopt quantum-resistant defenses, including quantum-resistant tunneling, comprehensive crypto data libraries, and other technologies with enhanced crypto-agility. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently released final standards for post-quantum cryptography. Transitioning to these algorithms will help secure data against future quantum threats. Organizations that require high security should explore quantum key distribution (QKD) as a means of ensuring secure communications. As quantum computing continues to become more and more of a reality and potential threats loom, it will be essential to adopt these measures to keep pace with the rapidly evolving cyber landscape, prevent data theft, and ensure the integrity of critical systems.

For now, CIOs can debunk any hype around this topic to the board. Though significant progress with quantum annealing has been made, military-grade encryption has still not been broken.

Transparency will be the cornerstone for maintaining customer trust in the AI era

Regulators in the APAC region are starting to zone in on the data protection and cybersecurity implications of the growing use of AI models. This is part of an overall bid to build trust in AI use and encourage AI-driven innovation.

In 2025, APAC legislators’ AI focus on ethics, data protection and transparency, will remain, However, increased use of AI models will lead to greater emphasis being placed on AI security and the integrity and reliability of the data being used. Transparency and proactive communication about AI model mechanics—specifically regarding data collection, training datasets, and decision making processes—will be essential for building customer trust.

Increased focus on product integrity and supply chain security in 2025

In 2025, organizations can be expected to focus more on product integrity and supply chain resilience. Specifically, they will conduct much more thorough risk assessments, consider accountability and legal implications of business outages, and review insurance arrangements.

In cloud environments, where complexity and scale amplify risks, real-time visibility has become a necessity. Expect to see a greater focus on comprehensive monitoring involving continuous tracking of both infrastructure and application performance metrics.

Oscar Visaya, country manager, Philippines, Palo Alto Networks, shared, “As cybersecurity takes center stage across public and private sectors, reflected in the Philippines’ rise from 61st to 53rd in the 2024 UN Global Cybersecurity Index, these predictions aim to help organizations navigate 2025. With local insights—such as deepfakes and cyberattacks fueled by rapid digitalization—and trends across the Asia Pacific, prioritizing unified security platforms and AI advancements will be critical to securing the Philippines’ digital future.”

Filipino student crowned Red Bull Basement world champion for AgriConnect app, bound for Silicon Valley

Filipino ingenuity shone at the Red Bull Basement World Final as Aldrin Sojourner “Soj” Gamayon won the title of world champion. Held last December 5, 2024, at Tokyo, Japan, the award ceremony was the penultimate event of a three-day affair for the Red Bull Basement World Final, bringing together the winning teams from about 40 countries.

Gamayon earned his win for his innovation, “AgriConnect.” This ingenious idea for an agriculture tracking app will allow even remote farmers to monitor their crops, build resilience, and increase yield. Gamayon claimed that this idea was inspired by his family.

“This means so much because I’m doing it beyond myself. I’m doing this for Filipino farmers,” Gamayon said of his win. “This wasn’t just about competing or winning. It’s about sharing moments and memories with people who are like-minded. I share this with all the other teams who are here.”

Following his win, Gamayon plans to head home and establish more partnerships in the Philippines. “It’s vital for the next steps for my startup (is) to get it out there, to develop partnerships or collaborations with people that could help me further the idea. I firmly believe that I could not do this alone, it takes a village. And, I’ll do whatever it takes to make it successful.”

Gamayon, who came from a rice-farming family, shared that the idea for “AgriConnect” was developed after he returned from his internship in Singapore. He said, “I wanted to make an impact for the Filipinos. I do acknowledge that flying to another country to study is a privilege and I feel that there is a responsibility for me to give back. Piecing that together with my experiences and the things I really feel strongly (about) led me to the farmers.”

He added. “It’s always (been) my mantra to build something greater than myself.”

Being the first-ever representative of the Philippines to the Red Bull Basement World Final, Gamayon said that he hopes his win will inspire more Filipinos to pursue their innovation and drive their sense of ingenuity forward. His advice to young, aspiring innovators is, “to not think, just do.” He explained that most people do not progress with their start-ups because they overthink. “Coming in to Red Bull Basement, I had so many different directions and ideas. But, it only started because I actually just did it.”

During the finals, Gamayon and the other Top 10 finalists pitched their ideas to the global judging panel, which included Microsoft for Startups head Hans Yang, Plug and Play early-stage investor Letizia Royo-Villanova, influential entrepreneur and business mentor Jun Yuh, AMD Meet the Experts host and producer Ryan Sagare, and Red Bull cliff diving athlete and entrepreneur Molly Carlson.

Gamayon’s Agriconnect outshone ideas ranging from Germany’s mental strength training app for athletes to Italy’s sustainable vehicle battery designed to revolutionize the transport sector. As the Red Bull Basement World Champion, Gamayon is set to embark on an all-expenses-paid trip to Silicon Valley in California, USA, for a three-week program of networking and mentorship with tech and VC leaders.

Over 110,000 entries were submitted across the world for Red Bull Basement 2024. The national winners flew to Tokyo for the Red Bull Basement World Final for the exclusive opportunity to represent their countries at the competition. The Red Bull Basement World Final featured intensive workshops, AI training, and networking opportunities with international entrepreneurs, innovators, coaches, and business leaders. This included Red Bull esports professional and founder of several businesses Amar Al Naimi, and Microsoft Corporate vice president for data, AI, and digital applications Jessica Hawk, and many more.
