The E911 National Office through its executive director Francis Fajardo has facilitated the trial of a cutting edge, next generation 911 system by the PNP that will provide it with world-class emergency response capabilities like that used in the US and Europe. Very soon, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will be better equipped to handle and respond to emergencies, natural disasters, human-induced incidents, and other distress calls .

Taking his cue from the current administration’s focus on quick response and resilience in the face of disasters and emergencies, and the directive of DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos’ to make the national emergency program adapt to the digital age by making it useful for all forms of public emergency calls countrywide, the Executive Director has asked NGA 911 (Next Generation Advanced 911)/NGCS to provide the national police with its patented call handling system.

NGA 911 LLC (Next Generation Advanced 911) is the global innovator of emergency calling technology and leader in next-generation emergency communications worldwide, with NGA 911 Philippines/NGCS as its subsidiary.

The state-of-the-art NGA 911 call handling system will let the PNP respond to distress calls and provide emergency response at unprecedented speed, accurately pinpointing location.

NG911 is a digital, internet protocol (IP)-based system that will replace the analog 911 infrastructure that’s been around for decades. The call handling system that will be trialed by the PNP will include the hardware, software, data and all the procedures and policies that relate to answering every emergency request for help.

Emergency number services will be enhanced by creating a faster, more resilient system that allows digital information (e.g., voice, photos, videos, text messages) to flow seamlessly from the public, through the 911 network and eventually, directly to first responders.

Robert Llaguno, country head of NGA 911 Philippines says, “The unique features of NGA’s technology; that is, IoT capabilities, international, global standards; resiliency and redundancy and the ability to provide the accurate location of the caller, will give the national police the capability to respond efficiently and accurately to emergency callers. For example, when someone calls 911, the location of that particular caller is immediately provided, and the search radius is limited to just about 5 yards with 90% accuracy. “

“On top of that, NGA technology is able to integrate various types of available systems or applications. We can integrate with local government’s CCTV systems and provide enhanced location and situational awareness for front liners and first responders. We can integrate with instant messaging applications and provide an omnichannel queue. Emergency 911 services can now be accessed through SMS or instant messaging apps, targeting the millennial population of our nation. NGA’s technology is also fully redundant and telco-agnostic, providing 99.999% of uninterrupted service and uptime guarantee. It will future-proof the emergency response capabilities of the PNP,” Llaguno explained.

At the moment, the town of Morong, Rizal, is the first municipality in the country and Southeast Asia to harness NGA 911’s next-generation advanced technology to provide leveled-up public safety and service to its residents. Alaminos, Pangasinan, Cagayan De Oro City, and Cebu City will soon also have their next-generation emergency response command centers in place.

Since its debut on Philippine roads in 2003, the Isuzu D-MAX has witnessed Filipino drivers’ ever-changing needs and wants.

Acer Day 2024: A limitless celebration of music and technology

Acer Day 2024 was a celebration and an affirmation of the values that Acer holds close to its heart. It was also a way for the brand to show customers its latest products, designed to enhance the user experiences and unlock the untapped potential to do more.

This year’s Acer Day theme is “AI’m Limitless,” which aims to inspire people to push beyond their limits and explore new user experiences with Acer’s vast range of PCs and lifestyle products.

On August 4, all roads led to the MOA Arena for the Acer Day 2024 concert, featuring Acer ambassadors SB19, Sandara Park, and G22 with performances from Cup of Joe, TJ Monterde, Ebe Dancel, and Rico Blanco. The show was hosted by Luis Manzano. The concert had an audience of over 20,000 people, both on-ground and online via a Facebook livestream!

“Acer Day helps connect us with our customers through music and different activities that allow them to try the products which provide tools that enable individuals to explore limitless possibilities and bring their ideas to life,” said Sue Ong Lim, managing director of Acer Philippines.

Pop/alternative band Cup of Joe opened the show with “Wag na Lang,” followed by its hit songs ” Tingin” and “Estranghero.”

Next up was singer-songwriter TJ Monterde, who wowed the crowd with “Mahika,” “Tulad Mo,” and “Palagi.”

Multi-awarded singer-songwriter and OPM icon Ebe Dancel wowed the crowd with his hits “Hari ng Sablay,” “Makita Kang Muli,” “Wag Kang Umiyak,” and “Bawat Daan.” Dancel recalled that during the pandemic when there were no gigs for artists like himself, it was Acer who first reached out to him to sing for some of the company’s executives and employees at a very small venue.

Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and OPM rockstar Rico Blanco kept the energy going with “Antukin, “Umaaraw Umuulan,” “Your Universe,” “Kisapmata,” and “You’ll be Safe Here.”

International superstar and Filipino favorite Sandara Park and G22 took to the stage for a never-before-seen stage of “In or Out.” Finally, it was Dara and SB19 for “Reset,” a song they collaborated on for Acer in 2023.

G22, known as the “Female Alphas of P-pop,” performed their songs “Boomerang,” “Bang,” “One Sided Love,” and “Loka.”

Sandara, whose group 2NE1 is reuniting, kept the positive vibes and upbeat mood going “Dara Dara,” “I Don’t Care,” and “I’m the Best+Can’t Nobody.”

SB19 proved why they are called the “Kings of P-pop” with “Gento, “Hanggang sa Huli,” and Crimzone. SB19 also performed an unreleased song titled “Kalakal” with rapper Gloc 9.

Finally, it was time for SB19 and G22 to perform “Limitless,” the theme song of Acer Day 2024. SB19 leader Pablo composed the song. The two groups proved that they, like Acer, are limitless in what they can do.

As part of Honda Cars Philippines, Inc.’s (HCPI) commitment to empowering the youth of today, it has continued its partnership with the Department of Science and Technology–Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) at this year’s 7^th imake.wemake:create.innovate.collaborate. After studying pressing problems of today’s Filipino communities, the participants created science-forward solutions that matter, for the people who need it most.

The competition culminated with the Final Presentation at the Citadines Bay City Manila, Pasay City, on July 25-26, 2024. This was the last stage for the top 20 schools, which spent months of hard work on concept mapping, intensive training, and a dedicated build period, during which they brought their ideas to life.

During the 7^th imake.wemake:create.innovate.collaborate closing ceremony, DOST-SEI awarded the following three schools the Youth Innovation Prize (YIP) Award, based on the criteria of novelty and patentability, functionality and unique selling point, collaboration, design and feasibility, extensibility, and practicability.

PLDT’s wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) continues to step up its measures against text scams. As Smart rolls out its improved blocking tool and boosts its #BeCyberSmart awareness campaign, it also warns against cybercriminals employing new strategies to reach potential victims.

“Smart’s much-improved blocking capabilities have prevented a significant number of SMShing messages from reaching customers. But scammers keep looking for new ways to run their phishing activities. They now send unclickable links, but with the same goal of luring customers into opening malicious domains,” said Jojo G. Gendrano, SVP and chief information security officer at PLDT and Smart.

Based on Smart’s investigation, scammers replace the dots in a URL with another character like ‘underscore’ or ‘slash’ to mask or conceal the hyperlinks. They will then ask potential victims to manually copy the address, place it on their browser, and replace the special characters with dots, thereby activating the link. Another method is sending what may look like IP addresses but are numeric clickable links.

Coupled with advancement in the PLDT Group’s cybersecurity tools, PLDT and Smart likewise engage customers to become force multipliers in the fight against SMShing and other mobile technology-aided crimes and #BeCyberSmart. Useful #BeCybersmart tips to identify phishing, the most common form of cyberattack, can be summed up in the acronym ‘SCAM’.

S is for ‘Suspicious’. Never answer calls or respond to messages from unknown persons or entities, especially those asking for one-time passwords or OTPs. Official bank and Smart agents will never ask for your OTP.

C is for ‘Clickbait’. Scam texts often bait victims with too-good-to-be-true offers or prize winnings, urging them to click the link to avail of the limited-time offer.

A is for ‘Alarming’. Scammers also prod potential victims to respond to the message or to click the embedded link by creating a false sense of alarm such as account suspension or loss of access.

M stands for ‘Malicious’. Whether sent via SMS or email, these messages are often accompanied by a link that leads to a phishing website.
