MPT South to serve over 340,000 motorists in 2025

MPT South forecasts more than 30% traffic growth by the end of 2025, translating to over 340,000 average daily motorists, a significant increase from the current figure of 259,815. This growth will be driven by the completion of several key segments of the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) and CAVITEX C5 Link. These segments include the CALAX Governor’s Drive Interchange, Open Canal Interchange, and Kawit Interchange, as well as the C5 Link Segment 3B, which will connect the current Sucat Interchange to the C5 Link Flyover Extension, spanning from SLEX-Taguig to E. Rodriguez in C5. The CAVITEX-CALAX Link, currently under construction, will integrate these two major toll roads, creating a more seamless connection for motorists.

    MPT South

These projects are slated for commercial operations before the end of 2025, bringing MPT South’s total road network to 67km. The new segments, designed to enhance travel time and accessibility, are expected to encourage more motorists to utilize the network, further boosting traffic flow in the region. This will improve connectivity and travel efficiency between major provinces in Southern Luzon, easing travel for daily commuters and businesses alike.

“Aside from providing an enhanced driving experience for our motorists, our projects also aim to contribute to the region’s economic development by improving accessibility and connectivity.  Once completed, our expressway network will provide a more seamless travel experience for over 340,000 motorists, a 30% increase from our existing daily traffic, and help spur economic growth in both regions,” said MPT South president and general manager Raul L. Ignacio.

    MPT South

In line with this, MPT South is allocating PHP14-billion in capital expenditures (CAPEX) in 2025 to support the construction and maintenance of its infrastructure.

“Despite the challenges we face in construction, such as the timely delivery of right-of-way and the recent typhoons, we are working around the clock to ensure the delivery of these vital infrastructure projects for the benefit of progress by the end of 2025,” Ignacio added.

Upon completion, MPT South’s expressway network is expected to boost regional economic growth by facilitating quicker, more efficient movement of goods and services between key industrial and commercial hubs. The shortened travel time will provide additional benefits such as reduced fuel consumption and lower vehicle emissions, contributing to nation-building and improving the quality of life for Filipinos.

HMPH selects top Hyundai Accelerate scholars for immersive training in South Korea

Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH) empowers the youth through Hyundai Accelerate, its pilot educational aid program, in partnership with Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI), the City Government of Pasig, Quezon City Government, and the Department of Education Taguig City and Pateros (DepEd TAPAT).

As part of the Hyundai Accelerate program, 40 students from DBTI, Pasig City, Quezon City, Taguig City, and Pateros were chosen for an 8-month classroom-based practical course, followed by 4-month On-the-Job Training (OJT) at designated Hyundai Service Centers in Metro Manila. This included training in basic vehicle inspection, diagnosis, and repair, equipping students with knowledge in automotive technology.

Following the classroom courses, the Top 9 performing students of the Hyundai Accelerate program were sent to the Hyundai Global Learning Center (GLC) in Cheonan, South Korea, for specialized training sponsored by Hyundai Motor Company. Joining the immersion program were Junje Aga Ganotice of Hyundai Quezon Ave; Bensar Ali Mindo, Jefer Jay Oboy, and Raheem Jebrael Lasola of Hyundai Shaw; Rovielyn Gutierrez and Mar Janlouie Hernandez of Hyundai Commonwealth; Rhaquim Nuhj Musa of Hyundai Alabang; Kenneth Samortin of Hyundai Cainta; and John Michael Niegas of Hyundai E. Rodriguez. The students were led by their school adviser Jeffrey Andrada, as well as HMPH Technical trainer Primo Franco Lanorio.

Last September 2 to 6, 2024, the top 9 students were given prestigious hands-on training in basic electric vehicle (EV) safety and understanding, as well as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technology; leveraging on their learnings from their initial OJT.

“HMPH is proud to empower future automotive technicians through Hyundai Accelerate,” says HMPH managing director Cecil Capacete. “We believe this program represents our vision, which is “Progress for Humanity,” as well as our commitment to shaping the next generation of skilled automotive professionals in the Philippines. We are confident that this program will equip our students with the skills to set them apart in the field. As we bridge the gap between the automotive industry and education, HMPH is thrilled to be a partner for Filipinos, be it on the road, or in the classroom.”

“I was really inspired, especially when we were in Hyundai GLC. It was our first time travelling to another country, and it was my first time studying cars. I realized that there were still a lot of things I don’t know about the field. But in the short period of time we spent in GLC, I learned a lot about automotive industry.”, said Louie Hernandez, who is currently rendering his OJT in Hyundai Commonwealth.

Rovielyn Gutierrez, who is also having her training under Hyundai Commonwealth, shared, “The trip was really memorable for me. I was even more inspired as this is my first time handling electric vehicles. I was very intrigued by the advanced technology and it encouraged me to further study EVs. I see myself working as an automotive mechanic and pursuing my studies in the automotive industry, especially since I have been studying this since high school.”

The inaugural batch of Hyundai Accelerate scholars are set to graduate in November 2024. HMPH intends to continue the program and select its second batch of scholars in the following school year.

Next-Gen Ford Territory Owners Club PH: Building a community and fostering camaraderie

Vehicle ownership can be quite daunting, especially for first-time car owners. This is one of the reasons why the Next-Generation Ford Territory Owners Club Philippines (NGFTOCP) was formed last year, a few months after the Next-Gen Ford Territory was introduced in the market.

From the latest features to the newest in-car technology, newbie motorists can sometimes find vehicle maintenance overwhelming. That’s why they look for car clubs and communities to learn more about their vehicles, share their experiences, and ask questions of their fellow members.

To mark the first anniversary of the Next-Gen Ford Territory Owners Club Philippines, the club organized a leisurely drive to Dasmariñas, Cavite, for its first-ever grand meet-up to finally meet the members and put faces behind the names.

Being part of an online community like the NGFTOCP where one can seek helpful advice can be incredibly beneficial, as Rodel Faderan, a first-time vehicle owner, can attest to.

“As a Territory owner, I do have a lot of questions on car maintenance. One good thing about the community is they can help provide answers and share vehicle-related information to the members,” Faderan shares.

As a car club, NGFTOCP prides itself in fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and support among its admins and members. “It’s really about helping each other and building our community,” says Rowell Punongbayan, an active member of the club.

With a great mix of personalities and diverse backgrounds, the support extended by the members come in different forms. “In NGFTOCP, members can ask for help – whether it’s about their Territory, personal matters, business-related questions, or anything else they might need assistance with,” shares Karren Leigh, one of the founding members of the club.

At the end of the day, the glue that really holds the group together is their collective passion for the Territory and their eagerness to share the features and capabilities that make it a reliable daily driver. “For me, the biggest selling point of the Territory is the space. Plus, the driving pleasure is also there. It’s really agile and fast,” says Miller Ocampo.

Miller, Karren, Rowell, and Rodel are just a few of the people brought together by their love for their Ford Territory and sense of community and advocacy. Who would’ve thought that owning a vehicle can lead to finding such a supportive and tight-knit group?

A first in PH: Globe, Lynk hold successful satellite SMS trial in PH

Globe recently held a successful end-to-end satellite SMS customer trial in a remote area with no reception in Zambales, a milestone in the company’s initiative to deliver connectivity in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

In the breakthrough test, Globe transmitted text messages using standard phones via Globe and TM SIMs through partner Lynk Global Inc.’s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites, marking a major breakthrough in providing reliable and inclusive connectivity.

The historic trial marks the first time regular mobile phones on prepaid and postpaid accounts have connected directly to a satellite to send SMS. This is particularly relevant in the Philippines, where many areas remain isolated due to the archipelago’s diverse geographical makeup.

    satellite SMS
Globe’s Technology Strategy and Innovations team lead the trial using satellite technology for SMS at Mapanuepe View Deck, Brgy. Aglao, Zambales. [L-R] Bryril Alvarez, Solutions Architect; Innah Antoinette Perez, Senior Solutions Architect; and Peter John Custodio, Senior Solutions Architect.

The live demonstration, conducted in a mobile blackspot in Lake Mapanuepe, Zambales, utilized Lynk’s state-of-the-art “cell tower in space” LEO satellites that provide direct-to-standard-phone global connectivity in partnership with Globe.

The test, which used a range of mobile devices, showed that direct-to-phone satellite communication is possible without any modifications to existing devices, allowing for widespread access and affordability.

The innovative achievement highlights Globe’s dedication to expanding coverage, particularly in rural and underserved areas where building traditional cell towers remains a challenge.

“This is a significant step in our mission to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that every Filipino, regardless of location, stays connected to the world,” said Gerhard Tan, senior director and head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe.

“By leveraging Lynk Global’s low-earth orbit satellite technology, we are breaking barriers and bringing the next wave of solutions to the remotest areas, allowing families, travelers, and businesses to stay closer than ever.”

Globe will hold another trial in different scenarios in Mindanao this month, solidifying its adoption of this innovative technology. The company plans to fully integrate this technology in its network to serve more GIDAs. Globe currently has a presence in over 500 GIDAs across the country.

Globe has consistently led the way in introducing cutting-edge technologies to the country. This customer trial is only the beginning of the company’s vision to incorporate satellite-based communication into its services, further cementing its role as a leader in technological innovation in the Philippines.

High-stakes as the 2024 SEAOIL Radical Challenge PH gets underway at BRC

It was the only first race of the season but tensions were already running high when the SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines powered by BPI got underway over the weekend. With a mixed grid of Radical SR1s and SR3s, there was action happening up and down the field in all 3 races at the Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC) and produced 4 different class winners.

    Radical Challenge

Fueled by race-engineered SEAOIL Extreme-97 fuel, Mikey Jordan drew first blood by setting the fastest lap in Qualifying. His blistering time in the SEAOIL-livered SR3 came as a surprise as he only arrived at the track on Friday and had the least amount of experience in a Radical. Also an eye-opener was Rainy Medina who ended the session in P2 despite running a slower SR1, which was a preview of things to come in the races.

    Radical Challenge

Race 1 got underway under gloomy skies with Jordan leading the way. But hot on his heels was Medina in the green-livered Autoholic Garage SR1 who eventually found a way past Jordan after a few laps. Behind them was Portuguese driver Andre Rodrigues in another Radical SR3 who was quickly catching up to Jordan. The pair fought for the class lead in the closing stages of the race with Rodrigues making a clean overtake with 2 laps to go. After 12 laps of racing, Medina would cross the finish line 1st on the road and claimed a commanding SR1 Challenge Cup win. Sydney Sarmiento, on the other hand, trailed by over 50 secs behind to claim 2nd in class.

    Radical Challenge

As for the SR3 Challenge Cup runners, Rodrigues was victorious on his race debut with Jordan following close behind in 2nd.

Sydney Sarmiento lined up on pole position for Race 2 and maintained the lead as the field made its way through the first turn. Medina saw an opening and immediately grabbed P2, followed by Rodrigues and Jordan. It then became a battle of the SR1s at the front with Medina desperately trying to take the P1 spot away from Sarmiento. But in his haste, the pair collided and dropped both of them to dead last. Now with a clear road ahead, Rodrigues and Jordan were nose-to-tail in the fight for P1 which lasted for almost half the race distance. Unfortunately, a technical issue forced Jordan to slow down and settle for 2nd in class, gifting another win to Rodriguez.

Matthew Edmunds took the chequered flag in 1st in the SR1 Challenge Cup with Medina in 2nd and Sarmiento a lap down in 3rd.

Everyone went gung ho at the start of Race 3 with Rodrigues coming out of Turn 1 in the lead. A lighting quick start from Medina again saw him move up to P2 and split the 2 Radical SR3s. But it only took a couple of laps for a much faster Jordan to overtake Medina and setup another Radical SR3 rematch with Rodrigues. This time, the pressure got to Rodrigues who made an error and went off track, allowing Jordan to take the lead and secure 1st place in the SR3 Challenge Cup.

It was another strong performance for Medina who won the SR1 Challenge Cup, followed by Sarmiento in 2nd, and finally Edmunds in 3rd to wrap up an exciting curtain raiser.

After a successful first event in the 2024 SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines powered by BPI, the series moves to the Clark International Speedway on the 11th to 13th of October for Round 2.

    Xiaomi Smart Band 9 reviewed

Xiaomi has elevated its smart band series with the new Xiaomi Smart Band 9. Offering more than just fitness tracking, this smart band seamlessly combines fashion and function to keep you in control of your goals while effortlessly maintaining your style day in and day out.

    Design: 4/5

    Xiaomi Smart Band 9

Xiaomi has improved the appearance of the Smart Band 9, adding an aluminum alloy frame and NCVM (Non-Conductive Vacuum Metallization) texture in a mystic rose color for a more luxurious feel and a metallic-like finish. The smartwatch features a bright 1.62-inch AMOLED touch display with a 192×490-pixel resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and up to 1200nits of brightness (which you can adjust or leave on auto mode). Whether in bright sunlight or a darker room, the screen stays clear and responsive, making it easy to use anytime. The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 weighs a mere 15.8 grams without the strap and measures 46.5 x 21.6 x 10.95mm for a comfortable and lightweight fit.

The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 retains its TPU band material, offering flexibility and durability. It has an adjustable size range of 135-210mm. Wearing it on my left wrist was easy and comfortable, thanks to the adjustable sizing that lets it fit snugly or loosely based on personal preference. I also tried it on my right wrist, and it felt just as comfortable, though inserting the band was a bit tricky. Beyond its sleek and practical exterior, the Smart Band 9 shines with its customizable watch faces. The choice of designs allowed me to easily switch up the look to match my mood or fashion style, making the smartwatch feel uniquely tailored to me.

The sensors, magnetic charging contacts, and strap release buttons are on the underside of the smartwatch.

    Hardware: 4/5

The upgrades aren’t limited to design—the sensors are better, too. The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 has an improved 2-channel PPG dual light system and a single PD sensor, making it more accurate and responsive. It features a linear resonant actuator that makes the vibrations super precise, so you’ll notice them for notifications, calls, or when the timer goes off. The vibration strength has been boosted by 40%, making it more noticeable. Also, the sound has been dialed down from 46dB to 40dB, so it’s much subtler.

    Xiaomi Smart Band 9

This smartwatch has a high-precision 6-axis sensor, heart rate monitor, blood oxygen sensor, and ambient light sensor. I was hoping for extras like an ECG monitor, hydration tracker, or body composition analysis, which have been left out, given the price point. Nevertheless, it’s still a solid smartwatch to use.

Regarding connectivity, the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 has the upgraded Bluetooth 5.4 for a fast and much more stable connection. I experienced this seamlessly through notifications from my smartphone, and data syncing with the Mi Fitness App. It is compatible with Android 8.0 and up, and iOS 12.0 or higher. With 5ATM water-resistance, it held up while I was washing dishes and sweating through workouts.

But what really amazed me while testing the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 is its battery life. With the upgrade to a 233mAh battery, it lasted much longer than I expected. I’ve been able to go several days on a single charge, even with regular use like tracking workouts and getting notifications.

    User Experience: 4/5

    Xiaomi Smart Band 9

Two words for its appearance: lightweight and stylish. That’s what hit me as soon as I strapped on the Xiaomi Smart Band 9. It’s super comfortable because I can easily adjust the strap to fit exactly how I like it. The material of the strap is also a winner—it’s soft and doesn’t irritate or scratch my skin, no matter how long I wear it. The sleek design works whether I’m sweating from working out or just running errands. On the other hand, I can see how some might find it a bit too small, especially for those who prefer a bigger screen. But for anyone who values comfort and subtlety, this is a solid choice. While I wasn’t able to explore the style options offered by other bands, but I was able to play around with the variety of watch faces. While they’re pretty standard, they still offer a nice range to match different moods and styles.

After a few days with the Xiaomi Smart Band 9, I’ve been monitoring my heart rate, sleep, and running data, and it’s mostly accurate. The heart rate monitor provides consistent readings whether I’m resting or exercising. The sleep tracking offers a good overview of my sleep quality, including light sleep, deep sleep, REM, and wake-ups. Just a quick tip—make sure to wear it snugly while sleeping to ensure the most accurate sleep tracking data.

The running metrics are pretty reliable for distance and pace. One thing I wish it had, though, is a running map on the smartwatch so I can track my route instead of just seeing it through the Mi Fitness App. I also tested the 5ATM water resistance of the Xiaomi Smart Band 9, and it passed with flying colors. I dunked it in water for about 10 minutes, and it still works just fine. I could even turn it on while it was underwater, though swiping through the interface was a bit tricky—so the touch responsiveness isn’t great underwater. Still, it’s reassuring to know it can handle some water without any problems.

    Xiaomi Smart Band 9

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I have to say it again—the battery life of the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 is truly impressive. It was able to last for about 3 weeks on a single charge, even with regular use of tracking features, checking notifications, and monitoring workouts. This added a lot of convenience since I barely had to think about the battery life. The charging performance is also great. It goes from 7% to 100% in just a few minutes, so I rarely had to wait long for it to charge. This quick turnaround is perfect for those times when I need a fast power-up and want to get back to using it without delay, especially on busy days. Its impressive longevity and fast charging are the standout features that add a lot of value to the band.

    Value: 5/5

Xiaomi has managed to keep the Smart Band 9 budget-friendly at PHP1,999 while ensuring it doesn’t skimp on style or functionality. For that price, you get a smartwatch that combines essential health-tracking features with a sleek design, and a powerful battery. It is an attractive choice for those who want a smartwatch that’s both practical and chic.

The future of money: Are we heading into an all-digital cashless era?

Around five years ago, I tried an experiment. I went cashless for two months to see if I could survive using as little cash as possible and settling my payments through what was then a burgeoning e-wallet scene.

Little did I know that propelled by a paradigm-shifting pandemic, what was then an experiment has
become the new norm. The Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes study for 2023 showed that almost 55% of Filipinos use cashless payments. Based on the study, 43% of Filipino respondents carry less cash in their wallets. This marks a significant change in Filipinos’ attitude towards traditional cash payments.

Beyond the Philippines, cashless payments have taken off around the world. The Capgemini Research Institute’s 2023 World Payment Report found that noncash transactions reached 1.3
trillion. Statista forecasts that cashless transactions will increase to 2.297 trillion by 2027.

    cashless

How the world is going cashless

Driving the global cashless trend are the new ways of transfering money. There are several methods for cashless payment. Globally, the largest and most common are credit and debit cards. Second, and rapidly becoming more popular, are QR payments through e-wallets/ mobile wallets. There
is also online banking and money transfer, NFC through e-wallets or mobile wallets, and finally, the fast-growing buy now pay later schemes.

The most recognizable and most common cashless payment method is payment utilizing your credit or debit card. Major retailers have been serving credit or debit users since the 1950s. They have been around for so long that they are considered a pillar in banking and financial services.

Also, an innovation for the cashless trend was the rise in digital banking. Online banking was an important result of the 1990s internet boom. It was a game changer in banking and finance, allowing depositors instant access to their accounts either through their smartphones or computers.

Digital or online banking allows users to seamlessly receive and send funds to other users not only in real-time but also securely. Online transactions completely remove the need to physically transfer cash from one account to another, as the bank’s own records would keep track of your transactions and balances.

E-wallets, sometimes called mobile wallets or digital wallets, are financial apps that store your financial information, and sometimes even your banking details. As the name implies, they
function like a wallet that users can place money digitally and then use these to pay for purchases or bills.

E-wallets burst onto the scene in 1998, when Paypal became the first mainstream e-wallet in the world. In 2003, a similar trend started in China, with Alibaba creating Alipay. Now, e-wallets dominate as the go-to digital payment solution.

There are two major ways how e-wallets complete a cashless transaction. First, there’s “tap-to-pay” which utilizes your device’s NFC and RFID to complete a secured connection and transaction. Tap-to-pay works beyond your mobile device, with the same technology being used in new credit and debit cards. The card’s EMV chips function like your phone’s NFC antenna, and data can be transferred through NFC and RFID.

The second major way is through QR codes. QR payments utilize your device’s camera to find and scan a specially generated QR code. Once scanned, the app recognizes the payment details encoded in the QR image and translates them into the app to complete the transaction. The only remaining step is authorizing the transaction through your chosen authentication method.

    cashless

What is the future of cash?

There are a number of reasons why people are going cashless. Studies indicate that the major reasons are ease of use and accessibility. Cashless payments are faster than traditional payments. A simple tap or click, and you’re good to go.

It’s this reason why cashless adoption is rapidly rising. As many ditch the plain old dough, what’s
next? Just what is the future of money?

There have been several commentaries and studies on the topic.

Just before the pandemic, individuals heralded cryptocurrencies as the future of finance. Blockchain technology and crypto’s decentralized nature led many to believe that the future of money lies in a transparent and secure system.

One country actually accepts cryptocurrency as legal tender. El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as a recognized legal tender in 2021, which means that you can use Bitcoin like regular currency.

Unlike El Salvador, the world is not keen on jumping on the crypto train completely just yet. Many point out that the current crypto ecosystem is not conducive to making it a legitimate fiat currency replacement. The market remains volatile and unpredictable, two traits most governments don’t want for their economies.

Enter Stablecoins. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies but, unlike traditional crypto, have a stable value. While regular cryptocurrency is highly dependent on supply and demand to determine its price, stablecoins are tied either to traditional fiat currency or a commodity.

The perfect example of stablecoins is the cryptocurrency Tether. Tether’s value is linked to the US Dollar, and the blockchain’s algorithm controls the supply to maintain stability and avoid fluctuations. Still, it’s not a foolproof system. In 2022, the stablecoin TerraUSD (UST) collapsed in what was essentially a crypto version of a bank run. A bank run is when depositors lose confidence in a bank and suddenly withdraw all their money. As banks move cash behind the scenes, a surge in withdrawals increases the chances of the bank defaulting, leading to more people losing their
    savings.

Bank runs are rare in modern times as governments have placed certain safeguards and systems to prevent banks from immediately collapsing. This system includes insurance, bonds, and sometimes
necessary bailouts from the government to prevent a domino effect. Unlike a governmentbacked
currency, stablecoins lack the necessary infrastructure and system needed to prevent another
    Terra from happening.

This leads us to central bank digital currencies, or CBDCs. CBDCs are digital currencies that, unlike cryptocurrencies, are wholly backed by a government and tied to its national banks and reserves. In a way, it’s similar to when banks print new cash, but instead of new paper money or coins, they assign the value to a digital token, achieving stability with the necessary infrastructure.

The main difference between a CBDC and a digital wallet/money is that the latter still has an equivalent cash amount tied to it. In essence, the 50 pesos in your e-wallet has a corresponding 50 pesos deposited in a bank. Depending on how central banks adopt CBDCs, these could be distinct from existing circulating money or could replace a portion of the circulating money.

Central Banks around the world have either adopted CBDCs or started testing them. Many, including the US, UK, and the Philippines, are still determining how to adopt CBDCs.

CBDCs are still relatively new, so there is still a sense of wait-and-see whether it could be the future
of money. For now, cash remains king in the foreseeable future. Through centuries of utilizing and trading with cash, it has become the bedrock of society. As we strive toward a digital financial future, for now, cash is still its foundation.
