Kapalong HS students win InnoGen4 with “Deafy” App for the deaf community

In their senior year at Kapalong National High School in Davao del Norte, four students were quietly building an app that would change lives. Unknown to many of their friends and teachers, Jhydd Mahinay, Prince Eco Barlisan, Marvin Jhon Alegario, and Floyd Karlo Ganza were developing “Deafy,” a mobile application for the deaf community that made it to the Giga phase—the final round—of PLDT and Smart’s Innovation Generation Season 4 (InnoGen 4).

“It was our first time joining an innovation competition,” said Mahinay. “Our group even submitted three proposals to boost our chances. We were ready to work on all of them if needed.”

In the end, it was ‘Deafy’ – a mobile app that converts sign language to text and speech, and vice versa, in real time – that became the group’s ticket to InnoGen 4.

    Deafy

“Our mentor suggested the project,” he added. “She shared that it was difficult to converse with a hearing-impaired student because she didn’t know Filipino Sign Language.”

Once the excitement of qualifying sank in, pressure followed. Not only was it their first innovation competition, but none of them also knew how to code – an essential skill to have when the proposed solution is a smartphone application.

“I had to pick up programming right away, on top of everything else I was juggling,” said Prince Eco Barlisan, the group’s programmer. “I signed up for free online bootcamps and watched countless YouTube tutorials. I grabbed every chance to learn—if it was free, I was on it.”

It was quite a feat in itself, considering that like most high schools in the Philippines, theirs does not offer any programming course. Still, the app was promising enough to carry the team to the final round—but they knew they had to do more.

During a mentorship session, Ervir Cabiling, Senior Solutions Architect Supervisor at Smart’s Network Strategy & Transformation Office, suggested adding artificial intelligence (AI) to the system.

“We tried it and it was very helpful in detecting hand gestures,” said Mahinay. The team also added tutorial videos to help users learn sign language.

When the group finally revealed Deafy to their principal, the head of the school’s Special Needs Education (SNED) program and master teachers during beta testing, the reaction was awe.

Deafy went on to impress judges at InnoGen 4’s Demo Day. It was so well put up that it bagged the top prize – “The Real MVP” – among senior high school entries. The award recognizes the most groundbreaking solution with lasting community impact, embodying this season’s theme of inclusivity, sustainability and scalability.

“Innovation Generation provides a platform for young innovators to create impactful, lasting tech-powered solutions for their communities,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and Head of Stakeholder Engagement at PLDT and Smart. “Through lectures, workshops, and mentoring sessions, the program helps future tech mavericks refine their ideas.”

Launched with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), the fourth season of Innovation Generation was anchored on the theme “Innovation for All” which aims to empower persons with disabilities.

InnoGen underscores PLDT and Smart’s commitment to meaningful innovation and to advancing UNSDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. By championing accessibility and opportunities for persons with disabilities, the program also supports the Philippines’ commitment to an inclusive and sustainable ASEAN future.

FedEx survey reveals 85% of APAC SMEs confident in Europe trade growth

Federal Express Corporation, one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has released insights from a new survey examining trade lane trends between Asia Pacific (APAC) and Europe, which highlights key enablers and barriers to cross-border trade for businesses in the Philippines and across the region.

Conducted in September 2025, the FedEx survey polled 850 small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) across 13 APAC markets and over 1,200 SMEs across nine European markets, exploring business sentiment, readiness, and challenges for cross‑border expansion among APAC firms expanding into Europe and European firms exploring opportunities in APAC.

The FedEx survey findings reveal a notable surge in European trade among APAC small and medium businesses, with 76% of respondents reporting increased export volumes over the past year. The United Kingdom (42%), Germany (40%), and France (38%) emerged as the top three markets driving business growth.

Confidence is equally strong among European SMEs, with 87% of businesses shifting their balance of trade toward APAC or maintaining current levels. China (55%), Japan (36%) and South Korea (24%) were seen as among the top growth markets over the next two years. This reciprocal optimism among SMEs reflects broader market dynamics, with the Asia–Europe trade lane recording 30 consecutive months of growth as of August 2025, demonstrating remarkable growth momentum along this vital trade corridor for businesses of all sizes.

Trade Lane Shifts Reflect Emerging Opportunities for SMEs

The growth in Asia-Europe trade is being driven by several key factors. In APAC, strong consumer demand in Europe, improved price competitiveness for Asian products and services, and strategic expansion opportunities are major contributors, with 68% of respondents attributing growth to these factors. A significant 85% of APAC businesses plan to begin or expand trade with Europe in the next 12–24 months.

Meanwhile, European businesses are drawn to APAC due to strategic prospects, comprehensive logistics solutions, and favorable trade agreements.

While there is strong enthusiasm by APAC and Europe SMEs to expand cross‑border trade, they are also aware of the challenges ahead. Regulatory shifts, complex customs procedures and global market volatility are major concerns impacting 86% of APAC SMEs and 78% of European SMEs’ ability to conduct business.

To overcome these challenges, SMEs are looking for solutions. 30% of APAC and 41% of European businesses want digital tools to improve supply chain visibility, streamline shipping, and reduce delivery times. Additionally, 27% of APAC and 41% of European SMEs seek greater customs expertise to navigate shifting regulations, avoid delays, and manage costs effectively.

Meeting Asia-Europe Demand with Capacity, Reliability and Intelligence

“The strong confidence among Philippine SMEs in expanding trade with Europe is a clear signal of the country’s growing role in global commerce. As international trade dynamics evolve, local businesses are seizing new opportunities beyond borders,” said Maribeth Espinosa, managing director, FedEx Philippines. “At FedEx, we are committed to fueling this momentum by delivering reliable logistics, intuitive digital tools, and adaptive trade expertise that help businesses navigate shifting regulations and thrive in the dynamic Asia-Europe corridor.”

To better support surging trade growth, FedEx added five weekly flights connecting Asia to Europe this month. Additionally, FedEx enhanced connectivity between Vietnam to Europe reducing shipment time by one day. FedEx now operates 26 weekly flights connecting APAC shipments to Europe, delivering express shipments to major European destinations in as little as 48 hours.

The company’s integrated air-and-road network is one of the fastest in Europe, enabling quick deliveries across the region. Anchored by key logistics hubs in Paris, France and Liege, Belgium, the network supports over 550 pick-up and delivery stations across 45 countries and territories and facilitates the sorting of more than two million packages every day.

FedEx also offers a broad portfolio of smart digital solutions and specialized trade expertise to simplify cross-border commerce. Customers can streamline customs declarations by uploading Electronic Trade Documents digitally to help ensure timely delivery while the FedEx Import Tool allows users to track clearance status, receive real-time notifications, and download required documents on demand.  The FedEx Go-To Europe Hub is an always-on resource with multimedia resources, trade guidelines, and local market insights, equipping APAC businesses shipping to Europe with the knowledge and tools they need to confidently expand and compete across borders.

The highly anticipated feature, available to select users now, promises faster, simpler, and more connected payments for all GCash customers soon

Following the official launch of Google Pay in the Philippines, GCash, the country’s biggest cashless ecosystem, can now be fully integrated with Google’s secure and widely accepted payment system.

The integration is now available to select GCash users and will be rolling out to more customers soon. It will enable millions of Filipinos to link their GCash wallets to Google Pay for fast, secure, and seamless transactions.

To link GCash accounts to Google Pay, users need to download the Google Wallet App from the Google Play Store, open the GCash app, and tap on their Profile. From there, they should go to My Linked Accounts and select Google Pay. After reviewing the information, users must agree to bind and proceed with biometric verification. Once complete, a prompt will appear that will redirect them to the Google Pay app, where they need to sign in.

By combining the unmatched local scale and trust of GCash with Google Pay’s global infrastructure, the integration redefines how users move through digital and physical commerce. With the integration, users can easily activate GCash as a fund source for Google Pay for various transactions.

Moreover, activating GCash on Google Pay provides a more seamless and secure experience, since it eliminates the need for manual card entry, without storing or sharing card numbers with merchants.

“This integration empowers our users to move through digital and physical spaces with greater ease, security, and reach, anchored in our purpose of making the everyday lives of Filipinos better,” said Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of G-Xchange, Inc., the mobile wallet operator of GCash.

“We’re proud to work with GCash to bring faster, convenient, and more secure payments to the Philippines. Google Wallet now in PH

With digital payments becoming the go-to choice for seamless transactions, Google is excited to announce that Google Wallet is now available in the Philippines. Google Wallet provides people with a safer, simpler, and more helpful payment experience and supports digital items such as loyalty cards and boarding passes. To get started, download Google Wallet from the Google Play Store.

“The Philippines is a nation on the move—vibrant, mobile-first, and rapidly embracing digital life. Google Wallet is launching right alongside that energy, offering Pinoys a single, secure digital space to manage their payments, travels, and daily transactions. Whether it’s the quick ‘tap-and-pay’ for your favorite restaurant, booking a trip across the islands, or shopping online, Google Wallet keeps your essentials protected and always at your fingertips. This launch underscores our enduring commitment to accelerating financial inclusion and fueling the next chapter of the Philippines’ dynamic digital economy,” said Prep Palacios, country manager, Google Philippines

“Google Wallet’s arrival reinforces our collective vision for a fully digital and financially inclusive Philippines,” said Lito Villanueva, founding chairman of FinTech Alliance PH and RCBC executive vice president & chief innovation and inclusion officer. “This collaboration with Google Wallet alongside the BSP and the DICT demonstrates how strong public-private partnerships can expand access, enhance trust, and deliver world-class digital payment experiences for every Filipino from urban centers to the countryside.”

BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto E. Tangonan emphasized, “The BSP promotes financial stability and maintains a forward-looking stance on payment innovation. We recognize the role of TSPs in advancing payments digitalization, consistent with the development goals under the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023-2028. While we do not consider technology service providers as operators of payment systems, we underscore that BSP-supervised institutions (such as banks and e-money issuers) engaging these providers remain fully responsible for managing associated risks.”

DICT Secretary Henry R. Aguda added, “The launch of Google Wallet aligns perfectly with our digitalization agenda. Secure and interoperable digital payment solutions like this bring government, commerce, and citizens closer together, ensuring no Filipino is left behind in the digital economy.”

Cardholders of participating banks can add their cards to Google Wallet and pay with their Android phones or Wear OS devices wherever contactless payments are accepted. Payment cards from Google Wallet can be used to pay online or in-app at merchants such as Shopee, wherever you see the Google Pay button.

Google Wallet acts as a digital container on Android, safely holding all the credentials typically kept in a physical wallet, like payment cards, loyalty passes, and more. When a consumer taps to pay in a store or make a purchase online, the actual payment is enabled by Google Pay. Essentially, the payment cards sit in the Google Wallet, and the transaction is carried out by Google Pay.

Online merchants supported by payment service provider partners will be able to offer a faster, more secure, and seamless payment experience with Google Pay.

In addition to storing and accessing payment cards, travelers can add boarding passes from Philippine Airlines and others to Google Wallet. With boarding passes in Google Wallet, travelers will be notified of changes to departure time and gate changes to ensure a hassle-free experience at the airport. Furthermore, they will be able to tap and pay securely using Google Wallet during their overseas travel, without the need for their physical card, wherever contactless payments are accepted

Furthermore, event tickets, cinema tickets, loyalty cards, digital vouchers, and digital car keys can also be added.

    Using Google Wallet is Simple

Simply follow the on-screen steps to set it up for contactless payments. If you don’t have a card saved and would like to add a new one, tap “Add a card” in the carousel at the top of the page, review and accept the issuer’s terms and conditions, and complete the verification process. Your card will then be ready for use in Google Wallet.

Adding digital items such as boarding passes to Google Wallet is equally simple. For example, after purchasing a flight ticket, consumers will see a button labeled “Add to Google Wallet,” which creates a digital version of the booking for easy access in their Google Wallet.

Travellers can start to add digital items such as boarding passes, bus, train, and event tickets into their Google Wallet

If you’re someone who has a lot of membership or loyalty cards to keep track of, Google Wallet can store them all in one place. You can also add these manually using the same process as adding a payment card. Shoppers can now add their IKEA Family card membership and Mang Inasal vouchers to Google Wallet, making it easier to access rewards and benefits seamlessly from their Android devices.

    Using Google Wallet is Secure

Privacy and security are the cornerstones of Google Wallet, offering industry-standard tokenization to keep transactions safe. When making a payment, Google Wallet uses an alternate card number (a token) that is device-specific and associated with a dynamic security code that changes with each transaction. Banks also require verification before adding a card to your device, and screen lock protection ensures that only you can access your Wallet.

If your phone is lost or stolen, you can use the Find My Device function to lock it instantly, secure it with a new password, or erase your personal information and payment details.

To provide transparency and control over information management, consumers can update their settings from the Google Wallet app or on their computer at myactivity.google.com/product/wallet.

Download Google Wallet from the Google Play Store and enjoy a faster, safer, and more convenient way to pay and store your digital essentials.

Partners launching with Google Wallet / Google Pay:

Google Wallet is a safer, simpler, and more helpful way to access essentials like payment cards, loyalty cards, and boarding passes from your Android devices. These partners include:

    • VISA and Mastercard Cardholders of  ChinaBank, East West bank, RCBC Bank, Zed will be able to add their cards to Google Wallet.
    • VISA cardholders of GoTyme, Maya, UnionBank, Wise will be able to add their cards to Google Wallet.

    • For transit, Google Wallet can be used to Tap and Pay at MRT-3 in Manila and on modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City as well as wherever VISA/Master cards are accepted and bus tickets purchased through Easybook. Tickets purchased through the Beep App to travel on buses and trains in Manila is coming soon,
    • Checkout with Google Pay when making online purchases on Shopee, Sephora (coming soon), and with merchants supported by Payment Service Providers such PesoPay, Payermax, and coming soon with 2c2p, Payermax, Paymongo, and Maya

AXA’s prevention-first outlook is redefining insurance protection

To deepen its understanding of evolving global threats, AXA recently released its 2025 Future Risk Report, which explores the world’s most pressing risks—from climate change and cybersecurity to social tensions—and how individuals, businesses, and governments can work together to build resilience.

When natural disasters strike, the toll on lives and livelihoods is immediate and devastating. Earthquakes alone underscore how fragile communities can be, and it’s just one of many escalating global risks, such as climate change, health crises, and economic volatility. For insurers, the challenge is no longer just about paying claims after the fact, but about helping people and societies prevent loss before it happens.

This shift from reaction to prevention sits at the heart of AXA’s global strategy, according to Thomas Buberl, AXA Group CEO, and Hassan El‑Shabrawishi, AXA International Markets CEO. During their recent visit to the Philippines, the two leaders from AXA shared how one of the world’s largest insurers is rethinking its role amid intensifying risks.

    AXA
AXA Group CEO Thomas Buberl emphasized that insurance is a vital tool for social cohesion, noting that while risks and their costs are rising, the focus should shift toward prevention to help people mitigate impacts before losses occur.

    Shifting to Risk Prevention

“Risks all over are increasing, the price of risk is increasing, and often, the assumption is that the cost of insurance goes up with it, when in reality, it doesn’t have to,” Buberl explained. “Insurance is a very important tool for social cohesion. The single biggest shift that we need to achieve is to help people with more prevention to mitigate the impact of risks. Because behind each claim is the tragedy of families and a lot of pain, our goal should not only be to pay for losses but to help prevent them from happening in the first place.

For example, after Hurricane Katrina devastated communities and infrastructure in the U.S., many sectors—government, private, and individuals alike—learned valuable lessons. When Hurricane Irma hit years later along a similar trajectory, the damage and claims were significantly lower because people were better prepared. This shows that with the right preventive mindset, we can reduce risks and protect lives, anywhere in the world.”

For AXA, that means investing early in health, workplace safety, and climate‑resilient infrastructure. El‑Shabrawishi noted that this mindset has been embedded early on for AXA. “We were pioneers in talking about prevention as a new competitive advantage for our business,” he said. “We’ve done concrete things on healthcare, launched networks of clinics, and invested in workplace prevention. These are not words, these are actions on the ground.”

The idea, Buberl added, is that prevention must be collective. “You can prevent your home from being more exposed to winds or floods by taking necessary precautions. But we also need to do it in partnership with governments, with communities, because a lot of the time, they are the ones who end up paying a large part of the cost. They, too, have an interest in working with us to ensure that the bill—and the human toll—goes down.”

    Climate Transition

AXA’s push for prevention is intertwined with its climate transition agenda. Years before the 2015 Paris Agreement, the company began phasing out investments in coal and tobacco and redirecting capital toward sustainable assets.

“We are on the one hand a big investor,” Buberl recalled. “At the time we were investing in coal, in tobacco, and sometimes these areas had very attractive returns. But if you looked at the natural catastrophe claims and the health claims, it made no sense to tolerate more claims when we could instead help reduce them. That’s why we stopped investing in coal and tobacco to help prevent those tragedies before they happen. Then we helped industries that want to transition go on this journey.”

This realignment, he said, was not about being a “nice corporate citizen” but about ensuring that the business model itself was sustainable. “It was really inherent in the business model,” Buberl said. “We need to do everything on the investment side and on the underwriting side to make the climate transition a reality.”

AXA International Markets CEO Hassan El-Shabrawishi highlighted the Philippines’ long-term potential, citing its well-diversified GDP across services, industry, and agriculture, which positions it as a resilient economy with immense growth opportunities for the future.

    Local Context

In emerging markets like the Philippines, AXA’s strategy is being tested on two fronts — climate resilience and financial inclusion. With natural hazards a constant threat and insurance penetration hovering around just two percent of GDP, the opportunity and responsibility are both immense.

“The Philippines ticks every box when it comes to long‑term potential,” said El‑Shabrawishi. “It’s a very well‑diversified GDP with immense growth that we see even more potential coming in.” The country’s mix of services, industry, and agriculture, he added, makes it “a very resilient economy for the future.”

But resilience requires inclusive protection. Through digital platforms like Grab, GCash, and Home Credit, AXA is expanding access through simple, accessible coverage under its global business unit, AXA EssentiALL. Operating in 13 emerging and 8 mature countries and serving more than 17 million customers worldwide, AXA EssentiALL was established to focus on underserved sectors, from informal workers to small business owners.

At the same time, AXA’s long-standing partnership with Metrobank, which pioneered bancassurance in the country, continues to play a pivotal role in advancing financial inclusion. Through Metrobank’s extensive nationwide network, AXA is able to reach more Filipinos and provide them with comprehensive protection and financial wellness solutions.

El‑Shabrawishi said these efforts are driven by a deep understanding of real customer needs. “Awareness is not the issue. For someone to take part of their disposable income to buy a product, it has to provide value for them. That’s why we first understand their needs and build something around it, not just push products on them.”

As the world confronts mounting environmental and social risks, Buberl offers a reminder to policymakers and business leaders alike. “Look at insurance as a supporter and enabler of economic and societal development, not as a necessary evil.”

In that sense, prevention is not just a business philosophy but more a collective responsibility, one that determines how societies recover, rebuild, and thrive in an uncertain world.

The event served as a sincere expression of gratitude to the newsboys, the dedicated individuals who bring the day’s headlines from the printing press to every doorstep. Their work, often unseen yet deeply impactful, keeps the tradition of print journalism alive and meaningful.

Among those who led the celebration were Vivienne Motomal, President of UPMG and Assistant Vice-President of the Journal Group of Publications; Roy Raul Mendiola, President of CMAP and National Sales Manager of the Philippine Daily Inquirer; and Lucien C. Dy Tioco, Executive Vice-President of the Philstar Media Group. Adding warmth and laughter to the afternoon were lively parlor games such as Bring Me and the Pinoy Trivia Quiz, where participants enjoyed friendly competition and teamwork. The most anticipated moment of the day, however, was the raffle draw, a joyful highlight that brought cheers, laughter, and a true sense of togetherness.

Every attendee brought home a prize or token, a small reminder of the appreciation and gratitude they’ve earned through their work. No one left empty-handed, and more importantly, everyone left seen, valued, and celebrated.
